Lionel Legacy Engine Set-up Help

Karl Anderson 022117 ·
I’m quite new to the hobby and have been slowly putting my 3 rail layout together for the last 10 months. This past week I was finally able to power it up and start running some trains, which was the best feeling after months of research and time spent learning how to get my layout to come to life. I’m running both MTH DCS and Lionel Legacy and things were going great as I had successfully added both an MTH & Lionel Legacy engine; however, when I went to add an additional Lionel Legacy...

Model-Building from the Ground Up

Arnold D. Cribari ·
First, Happy Father's Day to all of my fellow Forum Friends. If you love to build models of structures on your layout, check out the August/September issue of O Gauge Railroading Magazine. It has in it a terrific article, Model-Building from the Ground Up, by our very own Melgar. Melgar has not only become one of my best friends in a very short time, he is a retired aerospace engineer and college professor in aerospace engineering. You will see from reading this article that he has applied...

Engine dies on switch.

Miguelito ·
I have an Atlas O SF RSD15 engine that dies on any switch. Apparently the front pic-up somehow does not transmit power to the motors since when the rear pick-up reaches the "dead" spot on the switch and the engine stops. I wired the rear and front pick-ups to each other just in case one isn't transmitting, bit still the stall. I'm baffled. Can anyone unbaffle me?

Spring 2018 OGR Forum York Grandstand Meeting Minutes

MrMuffin'sTrains ·
The spring 2018 OGR Grandstand Meeting was held in the Yellow hall with the handicapped parking signs all piled up – seemed appropriate. The weather was improving – and by Saturday we could eat an Italian sausage with peppers and onions outside on one of the picnic tables. We had a large crowd, and several new attendees, welcome! Ed started the meeting early, like at 1:56pm, probably nervous given all of the hobby dignitaries in attendance. Away we went. Sprinkled throughout the meeting was...

Lionel TMCC Mohawk acting up on LEGACY

Grant Lamon ·
A few months ago, I purchased a Lionel 6-11411 TMCC L-2a Mohawk, and I just recieved a Lionel LEGACY command set #990. I set up the system (following the instructions, of course...) and move the locomotive. All of a sudden, the locomotive starts acting strange and starts to play random sounds. The whistle wouldn't stop, and the crew talk wouldn't stop glitching, replaying over and over. Is this an issue with the locomotive or the way I set up the LEGACY set? Because I just set it up, put the...

The Fall 2018 York Grandstand Meeting Minutes......

MrMuffin'sTrains ·
The Fall 2018 OGR Forum Grandstand Meeting was held on a gorgeous day this past Friday starting at 2:00pm. Probably the prettiest day we have ever had for a Fall York. So, we had the meeting indoors in the Gold Hall just north of the grandstands. This was probably the largest crowd that I have ever seen for one of these meetings. They were either a) the general public that have come for a Taste of York to find out it has nothing to do with good food; b) confused this as an early voting...

Could Lionel License The Construction And Sale Of A Full Complement Of Super "O" Track To Another Manufacturer?

Dennis GS-4 N & W No. 611 ·
The companion thread includes a compelling case for why a number of hobbyists find Super "O" track to be a very appealing alternative to the other track systems available. Based on the fact that Lionel has not chosen to reissue Super "O" to date, one could logically surmise that this decision is based upon valid business reasons according to their evaluation. Obviously, Super "O" is not everyone's favorite, and those hobbyists would justifiably not be interested in the track system. And, a...

Lash-up anomalies

Miguelito ·
Wondering why anomalies occur when two MTH engines are put into lash-up state such as smoke automatically activated when previous run had smoke off or number boards out when they were on before lash-up, and features not able to be addressed in remote that are there with individual engines. Anyone notice this in their experience. Specifically two MTH SF GP38-2 s back to back; two SF U25B s back to back. Bothsets PS2.

Lionel 262 - How to replace Pickup Wire?

NTL2009 ·
Greetings! Looks like a great forum, I'm new here, first post: I run a pre-war tinplate set around the Christmas tree each year. It was my Father-in-Law's (RIP), a Lionel 262 locomotive. It runs pretty good, but it is touchy to get a set-and-forget steady speed from my TECH II 027 controller. I often need to monitor it to avoid it gaining speed and derailing, or stalling (usually ~27~33%, maybe 50-60% to get it started?). After this season, I decided to open it up and clean the...

Re: Genset Switcher (non Vision Line) Starts Up by itself

gunrunnerjohn ·
That's the behavior of the Vision Line one, but I confess to now knowing if it'll start up by itself if you actually shut it down and not just let it time out. From the user's manual. The starting up when you do a full shutdown doesn't seem right.

Re: Genset Switcher (non Vision Line) Starts Up by itself

Boilermaker1 ·
The idle powerdown/restart is a feature of the locomotive. Restart of the locomotive after shutting it down via the remote (pressing the circle on the screen) is not. When you power down the remote, do you then unplug/shutoff the legacy base while the transformers are still on? If it loses the legacy signal it would revert to conventional... and start up.

Re: Genset Switcher (non Vision Line) Starts Up by itself

Stubai ·
I did not unplug or shut off the legacy base after powering down the remote and the track power transformers were still on. I'm using Lionel Power Bricks and a DCS TIU (see picture). The restart happened after I moved the engine off of a turntable and onto a spur track which is in a roundhouse (see picture). I have 8 spurs in the roundhouse and they all share the same block of power. Each spur consists of a 40 inch section of Atlas O straight track and I have the two outer rails tied...

The TMCC/Legacy signal is one-way, no track signal check possible at the remote.

Re: Genset Switcher (non Vision Line) Starts Up by itself

Stubai ·
I guess I'll try the ground plane wire trick and see if that solves the problem. Since it would run in between the stalls of the roundhouse, I won't need to hide it with scenery.

Re: Genset Switcher (non Vision Line) Starts Up by itself

Stubai ·
Based on OGR member comments, I was able to isolate and fix the problem. 1st of all, I was able to determine that the Genset switcher ran just fine on three of the other four Lionel Powerhouse Bricks which have many blocks of power elsewhere on the layout. My layout is 21' X 39' so I have a lot going on. So then I started focusing in on the roundhouse track spurs. That's when the switcher goes wild - starts up by itself and takes off at full throttle so I knew something was going on in this...

Re: ALL SCALES: L.E.D. ultimate hook up wire

gunrunnerjohn ·
Uhh... NO. You can probably argue the "Stronger than magnet wire", but the " and being stranded it carries electricity much better " is indefensible. At low frequencies or DC, a solid wire of the same core diameter will be better than stranded for carrying current. As frequency rises, a point will come where stranded wire will be better; it will be able to take a higher current than a solid core of the same diameter. However, the so-called "skin effect" is only for insulated strands, plain...
