Atlas Trainman 4750 hoppers

Alan Hummel ·
What's happened to the Trainman 4750 in O Scale? New schemes are coming out in the 4427 hopper, but it seems the 4750 offerings are about "0." The new schemes on the 4427s are VERY NICE & would love to see these schemes & others on the 4750s. For instance,Chessie System is represented on the 4427 hopper-how great to see the proper Chessie scheme on the 4750s,as well as a new CSX car with conspicuity stripes & new car numbers. The paint on the original CSX hopper was great but the...

Atlas O Leaf Spring Debacle

Rapid Transit Holmes ·
Several months ago, I finally succumbed to the desire to own several of the Atlas O Trainman 60' coaches in CNJ paint to revive memories of the bad old days of the 1970's. The cars are very nice, if not prototype, but, on unpacking one of the cars, I found that one of the plastic leaf springs was lying broken in the bottom of the packaging. I tried resurrecting it but the pieces crumbled. I wrote several emails to Atlas O personnel listed on their "contact" page requesting replacement...

Lionel Legacy E8 OGR review tractive effort question

BobbyD ·
In the June/July issue it says the powered unit weighs over 4.5 pounds yet it has only 1 pound 2 ounces of pulling power. IIRC in the Altas Trainman Dash review from a few months ago the weight is about the same yet the pulling power was double. Do these really pull that poorly or was the test a fluke? A friend brought it to my attention since he is looking to purchase a pair and I had to go dig out the issue as I'd skipped it. Anyone own a set for their first hand experiences? Thanks

Spritework of custom freight cars that could make for some really neat products or custom items

TheRWBYRailfan ·
For many a model railroader, we've had lots of ideas for model trains. People customize, kit-bash or restore old/new items into something unique and creative. Some of us have taken the steps to make these items a reality, but one problem persists; they're custom items that only belong to you. No one else in the world would have a custom "Be Specific, Ship Union Pacific!" boxcar made from a Postwar 6454 but you. Other times, ideas float around that would make great items yet no one has ever...

Atlas O TMCC Dash 8 Help Needed

Will Ebbert ·
I have an Atlas Trainman Dash 8-40CW with TMCC. When I bought it (new) it wouldn't operate in command control. Conventionally it runs perfectly. When I try running it with Legacy, nothing happens. The lights come on and the sounds are off as they should be, but it is unresponsive to the remote. Nothing as ID 1, and I can't program a new one in it. I sent it to Atlas to be fixed, but Bill said it worked fine when it got there and sent it back. Same issue when I tried running it again. I have...

Boston & Maine Caboose by Atlas O

MELGAR ·
My Atlas O Trainman model of Boston & Maine caboose #482 arrived today. According to Atlas O, this is a model of a caboose made by Magor Car Corporation in 1937 in Clifton, New Jersey. It is a nicely detailed model that looks and runs well. Two items are noteworthy. The grab rails are molded in, not added on, although the paint is applied so accurately that this is hardly noticeable to me. Also, no conductor figure is seated in the caboose. I ran the model behind my MTH Premier B&M...

Re: Atlas Trainman 4750 hoppers

Falconservice, It seems Atlas pulls cars at random without thought of schemes that came in order. The SCL yellow 4750 should've been done years ago & rerun by now. A Chessie 4750 should've come along in a close time period with this yellow SCL hopper,as the Chessie System was formed in the early '70s. The '70s Family Lines System 4750 scheme should've followed in the '77 time frame. Atlas did 4 cars of this version with LN reporting letters, but an SCL car should have been included,maybe...

Falconservice, I just saw this in an email from Mr. Muffin's Trains!! This would be the SCL/yellow cars I'm thinking without pic's to be sure? I'll sure have some of those even though I was hoping for Family Lines, but this is a start in the right direction. Then again, maybe this is an SCL/Family Lines hopper??? I also see,Atlas is releasing new numbers of CSX 50'6" boxcars. Thank you for this update, was going to post this here myself, when I opened up your post. Al Hummel

To all: Just got official confirmation the Atlas 4750 is yellow with black SCL letters in the middle. Glad to see this car. It presents 3 modeling possibilities. 1 car as produced with all original spec's,1 car with "SBD" letters & a new car number, then a "CSXT" car using the same car number, the only change would be the CSXT reporting letters. This is almost non-existant in my era,but since it's my layout,I can make ANYTHING work. Hasn't the Rock Island model been done? Al Hummel

FALCONSERVICE, Andrew you did good in suggesting the yellow SCL 4750. How's about Family Lines? Think Atlas will pay any attention to those schemes since they did 1 back around the 2009(?) time frame? Atlas did their CSX car at the same time-wonder since they did a rerun of the CSX 50'6" boxcar if they'll do a rerun of CSX 4750s? Atlas doesn't do much updating, meaning a rerun of CSX 4750s today, would find reflector stipes on the hoppers for the most part, which they didn't do on their rerun...

The Pullman-Standard 4427 3-bay hoppers have already been produced and released. The 4750 3-bay hoppers could be announced in July when the next Atlas catalog arrives. The B&O, C&0, WM might not have had very many of the PS-2-CD 4750 hoppers, since the photos of them are hard to find. Andrew

Andrew & Mike DeBerg, Thank you for your inputs & for the fantastic photo,I hope Atlas is watching. B&O is the only Railroad that had 4750s as you mentioned. B&O had 200 cars. C&O had 4740s,not sure about WM never saw any in WM lettering. I have photos for FAMILY LINES. These would make nice models I think, they were beauties when they came out of the shops. Re: Atlas Trainman 4750 hoppers

Paul, I agree we need at least 4 numbers. Atlas did 4 numbers on some cars then dropped to 2,why I'll never know. They also need to supply replacement decals that make multiple cars with different car numbers possible. For CSX,I've been able to get close with Woodland Scenics dry transfers, but the entire car number neds to be changed to make the car number look correct. Al Hummel

Thank you John, Thought the pulling power was way low in the review and I might have changed tires to see if they were the cause or not. Told my friend if these really couldn't pull more than an A-A I'd expect we'd have heard about it by now. Nice video too!

Re: Lionel Legacy E8 OGR review tractive effort question

The pulling power is double on the Trainman Dash 8's because they have 4 traction tires per truck because there are traction tires on the "blind wheels" and on the last wheel set. You can see that pretty clearly in Erics review (at the 8:32 point of the video):

That's interesting. Wonder why they do it as rubber tires are a pain in the #*tt maintenance issue at times. Don't have any rubber tired diesels from any manufacturer where the wheels slip. Don't recall if the review says if these were new in the box or not, yet with that poor of a tractive effort on a 4 pound locomotive I'd have swapped on some new tires!
