Lionel 21" Passenger Cars "Southern"

ted K ·
I bought the Lionel 21" Stations sounds Dinning car "Southern" and was looking to buy the other 21" passenger cars-specifically the Observation Car and the Coach Car but have not found them anywhere - wonder if the "Southern" is not that popular in rest of the country but thought that here in North Carolina I would be able to find them. I have sent emails to some of the advertisers on this site with no luck - just looking for ideas - not in a rush to get them but would like to get by years end.

DCC for 3 rail observation

Guitarmike ·
This post is not intended to be a "dcc is better/worse than" discussion, I have no experience with anything other than a 1990's Digitrax Bigboy system and the same era Lenz system. After 15 years away I am getting back into the hobby, I have 4 conventionally powered engines. I had a large O scale trolley layout that ran on Digitrax, 22'x50', 190 of main line track that could handle 10 cars running at one time. I ran models with open frame motors that were built in the 30's as well as the...

not on a 1207 that I am aware of. Usually the sets contain two of the 1201s and a 1205 baggage.

Ok, I went through some catalogs and reference works, and as far as I can tell there was no 1206/1207 Red LB car made. The sets of your vintage generally came with a 1200 Baggage (the 1205 was primarily round roof only) and either 1 or 2 1201 pullman coaches. The only square roof observations are late in their run with the 5 window design that carries over to the round roof cars.... probably transitional and specials more than anything. Now, beware that Flyer did anything and everything to...

Re: DCC for 3 rail observation

Trainman2 ·
Just got a second Airwire and Sondtraxx 2 for my birthday, and I put it in my Williams Camelback. It now has the proper single stage air pump, whistle, bell, and chuff. It was difficult to cram all of the components into the small tender, and the speaker is smaller than I would like, but the sound is acceptable. Unlike Lionel Legacy, even if only one loco is selected, the features program on all you other engines. I discovered this when my K4 made the wrong sounds. You can change the decoder...

Never heard about changing the frequency, that's not how DCC works. As for programming more then one locomotive, that depends on how you do it. If you are programming on the main and have more then locomotive with the same DCC ID, you could be programming more then one. Also, some command systems program per the selected locomotive, or program all, depending on how you enter the program mode. This is in case you have several locomotives you need to program the same way all at once. If you...

The frequency is for the Airwire decoder. See my above post about that. Airwire has a series of frequencies to select from. It even has a frequency to run Stanton's S cab. Airwire is used to allow battery operation with DCC, and operates via wireless remote, not through the rails as with conventional DCC.

Ah, I don't know of Airwire as I have zero interest in running my trains with batteries. I had just guessed it was another brand of typical style decoders I hadn't come across yet.

I just picked up the loco in new in the box condition, now I need the cars that go with it. If you have the cars and are not enjoying them as much as some other new addition to your collection I will give them a good home. They would be desplayed on my wall when not running at the club layout or my carpet central. Im looking for the ribbed sidded cars and louvered beavertail.

Under The Hood: Polar Express Elf-Powered Observation Car!

M. Mitchell Marmel ·
At the request of @JohnD's dad, Joe D aka "Mickey Mantle", I've replicated the scene where elves on a hand car push the Polar Express' observation car back into place.. The main issue was the pickup on the Elf handcar. It wasn't playing nice with the track on Joe's layout, so he requested I run a jumper wire with plug from the pickups on the observation car to the handcar. A small length of Plastruct tubing was cemented to the underside of the observation platform. In...

Personally, I do not like when the importers choose this approach of announcing/producing individual passenger cars over a period of years. I've tolerated it with Lionel's Polar Express (scale cars), but that's been my sole exception. I much prefer when an entire "set" is offered... at least a 4- or 5-pack WITH observation so a short train can be run. The overseas manufacturing relationships are too precarious right now to risk purchasing one car at a time. But if you want the CZ from Atlas,...

The Atlas scale length passenger situation is a "darned if you do and darned if you don't" scenario. In Atlas O's defense, they thought they were doing the right thing by spreading out the delivery of an expensive passenger train set, so that potential customers could then afford to purchase the whole set, spread-out over 2 or 3 years. Little did Atlas know that the manufacturer would "throw them out of their factory" due to the Bachman "expansion". On the other side of the coin, Sunset/3rd...

Well, also in defense of Atlas as a company trying to make a reasonable return-on-investment (a.k.a., "profit"....hissssssssssssss ), the dies/tooling for these babies do not qualify under 'chump change'. If you want the accuracy of proper contours, window arrangements, interiors, etc., etc., blah, blah, then EACH one of the body styles is different, or heavily modified, tooling. Based on the market size...predicted, now demonstrated...and the economy...oh, wait, there's nothing wrong there!

Atlas already offered replacement window strips with the blinds correctly located on the INSIDE. All you have to to is slide the old, incorrect, wind strips out and slide the new replacements in. At the risk of hijacking this thread, I do hope that somebody comes out with a decent 60 foot RPO, whether it's John Santa Fe's or somebody else's. One of the things about three-rail that irritates me is that even where the prototype had decent short cars available and condensation wasn't necessary, the toy train makers chose to make toy-like models of baggage and RPO cars. The Santa Fe's streamlined RPOs did good service on the Santa Fe, and some ran for a while afterwards on the New Haven...
