CAN'T DOWNLOAD FILES INTO A PS2 UPGRADE BOARD

PJ ·
I recently had to replace the the boards in a railking J. so far I can't get it load past sector 8. Sometimes it calls it a 5v engine and sometimes it calls it a 3 volt. I'm sure its a 3v 3 meg board, stock from the upgarde kit. I can load the engine comes up as #1 and a blank engine name, runs forward backward and gives the new board whistle and bell sounds. I'[ve tried every 3 volt file I can find, some not even for a N&W J just to see if I can get it to load. It sometimes hang up on...

Help with Allegheny steam loco w/ PS2 upgrade

George S ·
Looking for some advice on my engine.  I bought a PS1 Premier Allegheny a while back.  I then upgraded it to PS2 with a PS2 Steam upgrade kit.  I did this myself. The engine works OK.  Almost all of the features work in DCS and conventional mode.  The only problem is using reverse in either DCS or conventional mode.  When the engine is on the track at zero SMPH, I cannot push the direction button and get the engine to move in reverse.  The engine does...

K-line Plymouth-Upgrade advice?

I'm considering upgrading my K-Line USS Steel Plymouth to Command Control. Has anyone ever attempted this? Is it possible to convert the engine to DCS, or is it better to just do TMCC? Is there even space in the locomotive?

Re: MTH Challenger #3895 PS1 Smoke Upgrade Problem

GGG ·
It is probably better to figure out how you are going to lock the smoke unit in place before you start cutting an modifying the smoke funnel you just bought. If the one you bought doesn't work, buy one that does, or make one. The fact that is too large is easier to get to work then one that is too small. After rereading how can the funnel be too wide to span the stack bosses. If it where too narrow that would not work. How you fix the smoke unit in place comes first, then size the funnel or...

Dan, Thanks for the like on my old upgrade post! I'm sorry I didn't shoot any photos during the upgrade. I gutted the cab of figures and stood the board up vertically. I used a piece of card stock to insulate the back side and shield the solder side from view. I left the smoke unit in, but not wired for command control. I'm certain the unit would need a different heat element as is smokes to much at command track voltage. My key factor for success was patience. I spread this out over a few...

Actually, the TMCC board will provide it half-wave track power, and it works fine that way. The same smoke unit is in the K-Line Porter, and I upgraded that and wired it's smoke unit directly to the smoke output of the MC-II board. For the Plymouth, I'm seriously tempted to replace the smoke unit with the MTH HO smoke unit and try to fit the MC-II in the body and sound in the cab.

GRJ, Good to know about the half wave. Thanks. However, I think the bd. I used was feature set for a blinking strobe as it came from a Trackmobile. I can't remember if it had an extra output to do smoke or not. Good luck on your plan!

Re: K-line Plymouth-Upgrade advice?

There's no way any of the current DCS stuff would have a chance of fitting into the Plymouth! You could tow it around in a car behind it and probably do OK. I have one that I'm also going to upgrade, I'll be using the ERR MiniCommander 2 with smoke control. I'm guessing I may have to do some "creative" alterations to the cab configuration to fit the board in. I'd like to have sound, but I think that's a total pipe dream from looking at it.

Could there be a chance of modifying the hood for the electronics, e.g, make it taller? Or would that require too much hassle?

Re: K-line Plymouth-Upgrade advice?

That's for you to decide. I will hasten to point out, the stock fan driven K-Line smoke unit consumes much of the space under the hood, it's pretty large.

I truly like the Williams by Bachman 40 ton switcher but its only conventional control so if I bought this engine you can convert it to full TMCC command control? When I first heard it came out and saw the review I was ready to jump and buy one but then found out its only conventional control and then I lost interest in it

Mr. Dremel with some carbide bits is your friend. You could probably taper the inside edges of the boiler shell openings to slide the funnel in.

Gunner what to you think about cutting the funnel in half then remolding the cut area using epoxy. If I do this I'll definitely have to grind the inside of smoke ports down to gain vertical room. Mike "Like my daddy always said cut twice and measure once!" Oops! He always said I never listened!

Re: MTH Challenger #3895 PS1 Smoke Upgrade Problem

You can grind them down, or you fill the area around with epoxy to get a better surface area. As far as fit, what does chassis look like? As Long as smoke fan solder points do not touch chassis you may have proper clearance. IF the issue is seeing motor, slip heat shrink wrap around motor to color it black. G

I have no idea about the trackmobile, I know that's a very small board. I prefer something that will be able to pull a few cars without risk of burning up the board.

i have one of those that was upgraded to TMCC years ago by Train America before Mike Reagan joined Lionel. It runs very nicely but no sound, and the smoke unit was removed. Now, years later, I lost the TMCC ID number and I haven't run it in a long time. Like the prototype the engine isn't very stron and can only handle two or three cars. Paul Fischer

Re: K-line Plymouth-Upgrade advice?

There should be a RUN/PGM switch to set the TMCC ID, so losing the old one shouldn't be a big issue. I have no intention of removing the smoke, I think having it run command with smoke would be very cool.

I'd look around for a nice used KW, generally the bargain per watt for PW transformers.

Re: Transformer upgrade?

Lionel also made the VW, a 150 watt transformer similar in style to the ZW but with less watts. In my area the KW's are getting top dollar, so I would go for the ZW. The MTH Z-1000 works great for me, I have two of them, works with; Lionel, MTH, K-Line and Williams. Lee Fritz

Re: Transformer upgrade?

A little more info about the KW and ZW. You decide which fits your needs. First the KW has two handles and outputs for running two trains at the same time, however the whistle control lever is for use with one train at a time as they both share the same handle. Other facts about the KW is that it has two or three output voltages for accessory power, the ZW don't have that. The ZW has four controls that can be used for running four trains at one time, two separate whistle controls independent...

I've never seen the dual whistle control of the KW as being a problem. How many times do you need to blow both whistles at exactly the same time?

A good modern choice with some real versatility would be the Atlas/Williams 80 watt transformer - built like a postwar transformer with two variable sine wave outputs, and whistle/bell capability:

That knob at the top labeled "Accessory Control" is the variable accessory output/voltage control. And it really is a pure sine wave, not the "electronic" sine wave the MTH has.

Horn should work, but if you start getting new engines..., might want to get a newer transformer to be save. I was conventional postwar until I crossed over to the dark side. Just one engine can do it.....

Re: Transformer upgrade?

I would go with the MTH Z-1000. You have new electronics in your engine, you would have new electronics in your transformer. On the outside chance, you buy something because its cool and it has proto 2 or something, then you have both the bell and the horn. Get it new and it will come in a box with a warranty so if it breaks.... you get it repaired or replaced. Just my thoughts. Ben

You need to look down the tracks and determine if you intend to expand your needs in the future. Most of us tend to grow our layouts and equipment, so if that is something you would do in the future, then buy more power than you currently need. This is the safest course of action. As for the best out there now, I prefer the Lionel ZW-L.

Z1000 but only because it has both whistle and bell control. You would have to add a bell button to any PW transformer if you wanted both bell and whistle.
