We are pleased to finally report our web site secured shopping cart is back up and running this hobby season on www.jrjunction.com . There is still a lot of tweaking and fine tuning to do but at least the all-new safer and better shopping cart is up and we have a lot of good stuff in stock! I'd like to see a small working wood O scale coaster kit. Along the lines of the coaster at Camden Park WV.

Re: CoasterDynamix products available on website

Alas, Dave, there's no such thing as a "small" conventional roller coaster. However, a "Mouse" could be done in a pretty small space in O scale.

Re: CoasterDynamix products available on website

I agree there is no 'small' wood coaster....but some of these 75 year old coasters at old 'trolley' parks, which Camden is, are much more compact than anything at the chain type theme parks of today.

This model is 28"x12". It is made of Lego blocks and our track system. Thoughts?

My son a I am into LEGO big time....we have a city that is 12 x8 feet. We are working on a theme park at one end. A coaster is planned. About like you show. I may try and build a working O small coaster. Even if it does not end up on my layout. thx

New Backdrops Video from www.RailroadBackdrops.com

railroadbackdrops.com ·
There has been some chatter on some the forums asking if the www.RailroadBackdrops.com backdrops are ad durable as we say they are. Yes they are waterproof, yes you can wash them with most household cleaners, yes they are alcohol and scenery cement proof....but....can they really hold up to plaster? Here is a link to our new youtube video from scenery expert Peter Lloyd-Lee of www.CustomModelScenery.com showing just how durable our backdrops are https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txVjiMfblXo

In that video, I didn't hear any noise as it passed over the switches, however, when it went into the curve it seems to be making the same sounds real trains do when they go through curves..."Rail Squeal". Notice that it does the same thing on several other curves on the layout.

Re: Lionel Berkshires emitting strange sounds

RickO ·
That actually sounds more like Lionels " trainsounds"squealing brake sounds. I believe in the case of a "conventional" trainsounds locomotive it is triggered by a sudden drop in transformer voltage and or speed. I suspect you have a drop in voltage at the switch, first off I'd start by cleaning the rails and see if it helps. From the Lionel trainsounds owners manual: Brake squeal To activate the sound of squealing brakes, operate your locomotive at a rapid rate of speed for at least ten...

Sounds more like rail squeal to me, but, who am I to dispute the almighty Lionel?

Re: Lionel Berkshires emitting strange sounds

RJL ·
I don't know for what reason, but to me it sounds like brake squeal. Does your unit have 'Brake Squealing' capabilities? Like Big Jim said the sound is prominent into curves, but also RickO said a drop in voltage, like when you activate the 'Braking' feature, the squealing sounds. A few years ago I called Lionel, when they were still in Michigan, and I spoke to one of the technicians and he told me when if the 'Braking' feature is properly working and the 'Brake' button is depressed, the...

Re: Lionel Berkshires emitting strange sounds

Big Jim ·
I think what is happening in the video is that the train is slowing down when it hits the curves triggering the "Brake Squeal" effect. I don't see any reason to call Lionel as it seems to be doing what it supposed to do. Being that the train is still going like gang busters through a curve, it sounds like rail squeal. But, that's just me after living with the ear-piercing squeal for forty years. Go out to your favorite tight curve on the RR and just listen for yourself. Kind of a neat...

Now, you have to GET the H2. More than likely, you have to use electrolosis, which uses power. Unless they are using solar, there is no free lunch.

The problem is a hydrogen powered vehicle cannot be safely stored in an enclosure. The slightest tank leakage creates a potential bomb. The explosive nature of hydrogen in a stoichiometric mixture cannot be underestimated.

Re: Emission Free Train

It is not "emissions free." NOTHING is emissions free. There is no free lunch. Consider how much "emissions" it took to produce the hydrogen in the first place. I get a kick out of the tree huggers who drive electric cars, thinking they are "helping the environment" by driving a zero-emissions car. Horse-hockey. All they have done is move the emissions from their tailpipe to the smoke stack of whatever power plant serves them. They are still using energy and it takes some kind of...

It should be said in defense of the drivers of electric cars, that even though the cars are not actually "emissions free," they are still producing fewer pounds of emissions per mile of travel than if they were burning gasoline in conventional on-board engines.

Re: MTH RAIL KING CHALLENGER Smoke unit

stan2004 ·
When you did this, was the motor still connected to the circuit board? Or did you disconnect the 2-wire connector first? As the schematic GRJ posted shows, the two contacts go directly to the AC track voltage. You can see the white lettering where the 2 wires enter the board says "AC" and "ACG" (AC Ground). Not sure what you mean by "negative" but because of the use of a bridge-rectifier in the circuit (the black component labeled DF04 near AC and ACG), nothing on the circuit board itself is...

thank you ref the little motor I was still connected to the board all I did was put the battery terminals on to the motor and it runs fine( ref negative ) you call it ground ( I think or is it the outer rail ) can we not just soldier wires to the copper pickups on the front of my loco and do away with the coils is there anything in the tender that has to do with the working of it via the tether cable I know that the loco dose not move unless it's connected to the tender I would realy like a...

If the smoke chamber is warming up but the fan is not spinning, I'd say you need to change U1. It is a 5V voltage regulator IC chip and you're getting only 2V. You should be able to read the marking on it - 78L05A or something like that. These are widely available here, in the UK, eBay, anywhere. About 25 cents or so in the US...I guess these just got a bit more expensive in the UK with brexit (had to throw that in... ). Well, sure you could solder the wires to connect the board to the loco...

Stan2004 the 2 small coils were getting hot and 1 broke one so we removed both if you are aware of my loco you know that the unit goes into the top of the shell ☺it's easy to see what you are doing if it's secured to the 2 copper strips on the loco I'm sure that Bob will be able to find a chip like the one that is damaged People think is a Proto one unit it's not I am in County Durham Could we have a phone call it would be easier to talk than text Stewart

The 78L05A should be readily available, even in a 3rd world country like the UK. Just kidding about the 3rd world, don't shoot me! I can't imagine you would have any issue finding the 78L05A there.

it's 1500 Hrs in England now so depending where you all are I'm not going any where I'm still baffled why no one wants to send me a diagram of my loco not the electronic side but the wheels etc and what is all that stuff in the tender if it is an old loco then surly there's plans for it some where thank you for the advice I'm getting

Re: MTH RAIL KING CHALLENGER Smoke unit

gunrunnerjohn ·
What makes you think any of us have such a diagram? "all that stuff" in the tender is the reverse board and the whistle board. That doesn't enter into the discussion of the smoke unit as it's powered from track power that's tapped from the locomotive pickups directly. The four wires in the tether are center track, wheels, and two for the motor.
