That was a common problem when they 1st came out. Many of them were like that inside the box. I believe there are some YouTube videos about it, and how to get the new one put on. If not on YouTube, do a search here. I know there was a couple threads about the bell.

Lionel Big Boy Question

PSU1980 ·
Team, I have one of the Big Boy's released last year and today the bell actually fell off the engine. I tried to put is back on, however, it is clearly not going to stay on. I looked on the Lionel website to order a replacement part but it says to contact Lionel so I did by sending an email to Talktous@lionel.com. Speaking to some of my club members 4 of the 5 of us have had the bell fall off. All 4 of us attempted and failed to re install. A few folks set them back for replacement as not to...

MTH Imperial Big Boy PS2 problem

Spamcan ·
Hi Guys, I've got a problem with my PS2 Big Boy (30-1514-1) in that it appears to be locked in neutral. Trying to unlock with whistle + three bells had no effect. Ditto factory reset. It was running perfectly and a couple of days later it fired up okay, but wouldn't move. Lights on, smoke on, cab chatter and boiler sounds etc all okay, but won't move. Put it in reverse (DCS controlled) and the reverse light comes on and the smoke stops. Forward position and smoke starts, but still won't...

if you open the bunker doors you can see the motor and gears, see if they are turning while the sound is running. I had a problem with my tender also, had a bad ground and a couple of pinched wires. I only had to send the tender back and Lionel took care of it in 2 days.

I just noticed that mine doesn't work now. I usually run with it in the low position but today noticed that it was up. I tried the refill and then the demo mode and the load didn't change. I turned the sounds off and I hear the motor working in both directions. I flip the switch under the tender hatch and the motor sound stops. Did you send it back to Lionel Dave and get it fixed? How quick was it and had any issues with the repair? Being a mechanical engineer I want to open it up and fix...

I agree with the masses. I'd ship it back and let Lionel make it right. If you're a veteran, Lionel will pick up shipping both ways. Someone stated that Vision Line stuff was paid both ways for anyone, but I'm not sure that's true.

Lionel has trained repair Technicians, with the correct parts, if needed, tools, test equipment and there would be no charge for repairs/replacements if the item is under warranty. You would have to call them to find out what, if any, are the shipping charges and which shipment way is covered. Ralph

Return shipping has always been covered on warranty repairs, it's the incoming shipping that's in question.

Dave, my BB tender just failed identically to yours! This was different than the hiccup I told you about at P&P. The coal ran down and I started refil to reload it which it did but the sound would not cut off. I got the sound to stop by hitting (R) reset but it will not run the load down any more, even in demo mode. Additionally, now every time I start (power up) the engine I get coal loading sound unti I do a reset. Tried all the reprogramming codes And other tricks with no success. One...

Dave, sounds like a good plan. I'm supposed to receive the water tender with flag today (figures since without it's coal tender the BB is down for the count) if it will fit I'll use it's box to send the tender to Megan (Lionel). Guess Wild Bill we be the only one running his at the park for a while. Since our two failures are identical I am real curious if this is a known problem with the depleting coal tenders. Still, even with the blow down issues we had to work thru I have to say I love...

Just an FYI; it is NOT a good idea to touch the rubber coal load while it is in operation, especially going down. It can mess up the winding of the fish line and most likely cause problems.

Re: Lionel 1999 Big Boy not chugging right

gunrunnerjohn ·
First off, this cherry switch on the bottom of the board doesn't really do anything, the other one is supplying the chuff signal. It's usually possible to bend the tab slightly to restore proper operation. Of course, you can also replace the switch if it's really bad, they're pretty cheap. Of course, my preferred "fix" is to install the Chuff-Generator , that allows me to have 4-chuffs/rev. If you pair that with the Super-Chuffer , it gives you good looking smoke with real chuffing and idle ...

Sid, Take a needle nose pliers and bend the bottom tab on the cherry switch up slightly. Before doing that, turn the motor manually and listen to hear the chuff(click) of the cherry switch. Turn the motor a few times to hear the chuffs repeat. If you do not hear continous repeat chuffs, bend that tab up a little and repeat the process I typed above.

How often is the missed chuff? This is TMCC and there is an occasional glitch you hear in RS4.0 sounds. IF it just misses one chuff occasionally, I would leave it alone. G

Not sure what the green wire is, can't see where it's connected. If you're using the existing chuff switch, you can connect to a pin on that floating chuff switch position, I just ring it out to see which one is connected to the R2LC pin-17.

That green wire is a wire for the smoke unit that was floating around.

Makes sense, I didn't remember any green wires for the chuff typically. The odd part is, I color code my wires for installations, and I use green for chuff.

I have seen the smoke unit use green wire to ground around that time frame. Always remember, wiring colors will vary on Lionel locomotives. Not always the rule with MTH. They are very consistent.

Sorry for delay - tether connections all good, both tender and loco. I'm going to try a new battery next. One strange thing - when it stands all fired up, lights on, smoke drifting from chimney, whistle, bell, crew talk and rear coupler all work on command. But, when the direction button is pressed on the DCS remote and the rear tender light comes on, the cab lights go off and the smoke stops. Reverse it and the cab lights come back on and the smoke starts up again. This has to be a simple...

Hi Alan, no luck so far! I've tried everything suggested by yourself and GGG apart from the battery. I'm just waiting for a new battery & charger to arrive. I can't seem to find any 'dry' soldered joints - I've powered it up in the dark with both bodies off and wriggled the tether etc, but no sign of any sparking. I'm very wary of poking around too much because I'm paranoid about blowing a board. I'll post again when I get somewhere! Regards, David

Lionel 1999 Big Boy not chugging right

I have a 1999 big boy and all works. But there is like a mis chuff. So it will skip a chug. But I can't tell what is causing it to happen. My only thought is that the second cherry switch is not working properly on the front set of drivers. Is this just something that happens on all of them or is it a problem. What should I do?

That is the the HEP power car, and the big "bubble on the roof" is the cooling system for the big HEP generator set, which produces 480 volt three phase AC power for all the cars.

Soon? after, Steamtown moved and l thought the Big Boy moved with it.? No? Which Big Boy was that and where is it now?

Steamtown originally received UP #4012, in Vermont. When the whole Steamtown collection was relocated the Scranton, PA, the 4012 was also moved along with the entire collection. Thus, #4012 is now at Steamtown in Scranton, PA.

I think this was same trip l visited "Kris" shops, which were closing out, and the Susquehanna was in flood.

For a number of years the 4012 was not on display in the yards, but was just east of the old Lackawanna Passenger Station (where you boarded the excursion in those days) on an overpass over the main road into town from the freeway exit. You could walk right up to her from the station and the excursion train passed it on every trip. You can see it here in my 1985 video of the trip from Lackawanna Station to Moscow. I don't know what year she was relocated to her present spot by the parking...
