Can you run your 20-3714-1 or 20-3575-1 Big Boy (oil burner)?

Susan Deats ·
Have any of you run your Premier PS3 Big Boy for any length of time? The learning curve with my 20-3575-1 Big Boy (oil burner) is almost above my pay grade. I'm considering creating an addendum to the generic instructions posted on the MTH site. Has someone already done it? How do you play the "Historical Rebuild" sound file instead of the regular freight sound file? The steaming whistle is fun. The instructions did tell me to add smoke fluid in that dedicated reservoir. With that, the smoke...

Trth be told, the injector on 4449 worked just fine, but Andy Adams thought it would be neat to have a Nathan 4000S (the "S" being Special, designed foe higher volume for the UP 4000 class locomotives), since it didn't have the two manual water/overflow valves like the "original equipment" Nathan 3850 injector on 4449. The Fireman had to be VERY careful when using that 4000S injector, after Andy Adams made the change. Those Nathan 4000 series injectors are quite nice, but I still prefer the...

HD NS 4014 and 4013 AC44C6M's on the Atlanta North District

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--uHejgmh4w In this unexpected video we see a pair of NS's brand new AC44C6M's on the point of a grain train just north of Dalton on the Georgia Division, first at Warring Road and second at the depot in downtown Dalton. After the passage of the rebuilds we then see a pair of trains on CSX, an empty coal train, and local A-702 with a slug set. Unlike the first 4 AC44C6M's, these units did not get the special "mane" or "horsebonnet" scheme. From what I can tell...

New video of Lionel Vision Line UP Big Boy 4014 on the New Lower Level!

After months of planning the lower level bench work is complete! A newly constructed 4×8 table has filled the gap but there’s still a lot of work to be done. I have laid out the outer loop of Lionel Fastrack however it will be temporary. Why? Well, I’ll be using the same track for the Amherst Train Wreck 100th Anniversary Event so the rest of the track will have to wait until after March 29th! In the mean time I might as well have some fun with my Lionel Vision Line Union Pacific Big Boy...

Union Pacific 4014 Receives Drivers and Requests PTC Waivers for Three Steam Locomotives

Evan Cihlar ·
News from CHEYENNE, WYO! Union Pacific (UP) Big Boy 4-8-8-4 #4014 has one set of her two legs back as of Tuesday 12/11/18. Photos published to the Union Pacific steam shop Facebook page showed UP crews on Tuesday lifting the smokebox of the gigantic locomotive and boiler with sideboom tractors and sliding the rebuilt front engine under the boiler. These photos also revealed a seemly almost completed boiler with the steam dome and smokebox inspection hatches missing and a complete backhead.

"The world’s largest steam locomotive is crossing America, and America is in love"

Mellow Hudson Mike ·
Fellow forumites, maybe there's hope. It's finally happening. 4014 is doing what most of us didn't think was possible -- something real and train-related is reaching, and successfully warming, the hearts of the not-normally-interested, video-game-obsessed millennials. Sigh. Check it out, published yesterday, on 'Slate': https://slate.com/human-intere...ocomotive-video.html It's fair to say that most of us in this hobby (small trains) are in it because of the tug at the heart of the big ones.

Neat connection between 4014 and 4449

Garfield ·
I was reading up on the American Freedom Train and learned that 4014 and 4449 have an interesting connection. In 1975 during the Westbound leg of the AFT, there was some sort of problem with the 4449's injector. Obviously it worked, but they weren't happy with it. In December 1975 the train displayed in Pomona, CA at the fairgrounds. Apparently someone noticed that, hey, the UP 4014 had a pretty good looking injector! A deal was made, and from Pomona on the 4449 ran with the 4014's injector!

That is the the HEP power car, and the big "bubble on the roof" is the cooling system for the big HEP generator set, which produces 480 volt three phase AC power for all the cars.

Soon? after, Steamtown moved and l thought the Big Boy moved with it.? No? Which Big Boy was that and where is it now?

Steamtown originally received UP #4012, in Vermont. When the whole Steamtown collection was relocated the Scranton, PA, the 4012 was also moved along with the entire collection. Thus, #4012 is now at Steamtown in Scranton, PA.

For a number of years the 4012 was not on display in the yards, but was just east of the old Lackawanna Passenger Station (where you boarded the excursion in those days) on an overpass over the main road into town from the freeway exit. You could walk right up to her from the station and the excursion train passed it on every trip. You can see it here in my 1985 video of the trip from Lackawanna Station to Moscow. I don't know what year she was relocated to her present spot by the parking...

Yes..l HAD the attitude about it l had about a couple of eastern roads, and their rolling stock (that's all they babble about... don't bother me)....but this achievement, getting one of the largest in the world on the rails recovers some of my childhood experience, down at the station with steamers, when they were just part of the scenery. Wonder if trackage and bridges would allow this economy size loco east of Chicago? I hope the UP got its publicity money's worth, plus!, and other roads...

Here's another misconception (in addition to the one Joe Hohmann pointed out): "America is in love." Other than my son and the members of our train club (7 at current count), only ONE other person I know has heard of this engine and its rebuilding. Just ONE. And that person is indifferent, at best.

Have not had chance to see for myself, yet. But received email from friend living in Antioch, Ill. He, and wife, were able to catch it as it was leaving Kenosha, Wisconsin. They saw, and photographed, the 4014 at same location we caught the 3985 Challenger in 2002 when she was making the rounds. The Challenger came North from the Chicago area, then was turned on a wye North of Milwaukee, before returning South the next day. Gave us a chance to make pics and a movie of her a second time. Well, as I read the article.... Yes, 4014 is crossing America. Just not ALL the way across from sea to shining sea. But, still rolling across our America for Americans, and others, to witness. Yes, crossing America through a good portion of it, and much to the pleasure and love of those who are fortunate to witness the moments. As pointed out, hope this does a lot to start a revival of interest among the populace, to some extent, and more renewed interests by other railroads to do same. How...

That's an excellent article for "the masses". It expresses the wonder and excitement of witnessing this astounding machine moving through the landscape. I was privileged to see it moving last Friday and on static display in West Chicago last Saturday, and it ranks highly amongst the better experiences of my 70 years. Kudos to Ed Dickens, the steam team and Union Pacific Corporation. The most important takeaway of the article was the final lines: " The train’s journey is a reminder of the...

If UP acquires one of those roads, it could come east of Chicago. I don't know how likely that is to happen, however.

Re: "The world’s largest steam locomotive is crossing America, and America is in love"

By and large, yes you could take it many places east of Chicago, with the proper planning as long as you stayed on the mainlines. There are some routes where you might find an issue, but you'd probably be surprised where it could go if someone really wanted to take it there. Remember, the east coast railroads had their fair share of very large articulated steam engines. The C&O Allegheny 2-6-6-6 was just as big as a UP 4000, and had heavier axle loadings, so it was more restrictive.

Jesse, You are correct, the UP got it, fixed it, and is running it for everyone to see. Even non railfans are astounded if they have a chance to experience it rolling by at speed. What still amazes me is the lack of crowd awareness with spectators between tracks, walking across tracks, being too close etc. If anyone has not seen it run and they have a chance I say go. You never know when it will end. Do hope more steam is allowed to roam the country. I'd guess a "Southern/SP Swing" before it...

Wouldn't that be nice. It would be interesting to know what conversations took place within NS, CSX, and BNSF with respect to the public relations bonanza that the UP received from this. One advantage the UP has, of course, is that their engine and their railroad have the same name, so name identification is instant.
