Lionel Legacy Version 1.5 for this listing?

MichaelB ·
I found this listing on Ebay of a Lionel Legacy Command System that claims to have Version 1.5. It has the Version 1.5 manual in the box, so does that mean the system is already running Version 1.5 out of the box? The package also has 2 blue upgrade modules, which I assume are either backup modules of Version 1.5 or they are a higher version modules. There's also a black module along with the blue modules, which I know is a blank writable module. Here's the listing for anyone who wants to...

Re: Proto-Sound 3 Powerports?

gunrunnerjohn ·
Do you run conventional or command? Unless you want to attempt to control the markers, I just use track voltage. For the flickering firebox, I buy the LED tea candles from a Dollar Store and remove the flickering LED, cheapest source I've found. They work great for the firebox, gives you the flickering effect for no effort, just a diode, capacitor, and a resistor from track power. You can power the classification LED's the same way. A 1N4003 diode, a 220uf 35V capacitor, and a 1K resistor...

I run command control. How would I wire to remotely control the marker lights and flickering firebox?

Re: Proto-Sound 3 Powerports?

gunrunnerjohn ·
Well, the short answer is, it's difficult and maybe impossible, depending on the actual installation. That's why I asked. I'm not familiar with the wiring on the PS/3 stuff, but for PS/2, the sound files control the functionality of the various functions, and if they're not in the product, you usually don't have that control. The simple way is to just run them from track power. It may be possible to trigger them from the headlight, but I'm guessing you'd need some electronics as I don't know...

Re: Proto-Sound 3 Powerports?

gunrunnerjohn, I will likely use track power to run the lights. Firebox could go either way, track power or smoke unit power. I need to test the smoke unit power output prior to making a decision. I appreciate your insight.

Re: Proto-Sound 3 Powerports?

gunrunnerjohn ·
I'm sure the 10ma or so of power for the flickering light wouldn't be an issue for the smoke unit power supply. They do change the power to the smoke unit based on the smoke output setting, I think that's a PWM signal, but I've never measured it.

MTH Proto 1 Engines with Original Battery

I know many Forum members have replaced the original batteries in their MTH Proto 1 locomotives. I have not done that, and all 10 of my MTH Proto 1 engines (most of mine are RailKing) with original battery run perfectly fine, and have stood the test of time. Most of them are over 15 years old. A train repair guy at my LHS told me long ago to run my MTH Proto 1 locomotives at least once every 6 months. I have made a point of running them at least once every 4 months. Most Beautiful Electric Ever Made?

Dennis GS-4 N & W No. 611 ·
Given the other enjoyable threads, I didn't see this topic posed. So, what is the most beautiful electric ever made? I would have to go with the green 5 stripe GG-1 as the most beautiful electric. This locomotive is among the finest of Raymond Loewy's industrial design triumphs, although, as will properly be noted below, he added finishing touches to the exterior of the GG-1and was not the actual designer. My father surprised me one Christmas morning with the postwar version to operate on my...

Dual Problem - FT Diesel Front Coupler & Fastrack Filler Pieces

I have a Lionel FT diesel locomotive (Polar Express 10th Anniversary ) that has little to any tolerance for for clearing adjoining pieces of Fastrack unless perfectly flush. The front coupler plunger(?) hangs very low and whenever the join between Fastrack pieces are even the slightest bit off, the train comes to a slamming halt as the plunger hits the lip of the track. I believe you will be OK, as my Big MTH UP #5 GTEL8500 will do 036 Fastrax. The EP5 is a about the same length as the #5 A unit. Looks dumb, but will work. This is really an 054 or larger loco to look even close to right, honestly.

Jaygee, What you're saying is that the MTH EP-5 might look a bit goofy on turns but is mechanically feasible for O-36 Fastrack? Yeah, the MTH Premier EP5 is a scale length unit, so while it should work, it'll look better on broader curves. I use 072 for this piece, and have not used it on tighter curves yet.

I have a PS1 version. If the new one is the same, each truck will have a set of flangeless wheels which will help it through smaller curves. You should be able to get it through an O-36 curve, but it may look funny doing so...but that is all in the eye of the beholder. I have run mine on O-42 and there were no issues. Watch out for overhang hitting into trackside details and structures.

There is a big difference between navigating and running well. The shell is well outside the ballast and the both rear and front couplers will be straining whatever they are attached to.

I received my MTH EP-5 ( 20-5663-1 ) yesterday. Electro-mechanical art on wheels and worth every penny! Just as the responses in this thread indicated, the EP-5 easily navigates Fastrak O-36 curves. Does the EP-5 look goofy in O-36 turns? I'm not the best judge of that. I've been in the hobby for a year and my newbie eye has a limited frame of reference, as I only know O-36 thus far. I see my ignorance as an advantage in this case (bad pun intended). Thanks again for the advice. Copter
