Cheapest tender for Polar Express that supports the BELL on the CW-80 transformer?

christmastrains ·
We have the standard Polar Express set from a few years ago.  It whistles but the Bell button on the power transformer does nothing. I believe swaping out the tender would fix that.  What are you recommendations/prices for a cheap tender that would work well?  Thanks

Ertl 1:43 scale F515 Railway Express Agency step side delivery van.

pro hobby ·
Ertl 1:43 scale F515 Railway Express Agency step side delivery van. This late model stepside van is typical of mid 1960s stepside vans used by delivery companies.  It could be used on an O scale model railroad scene. Although the REA logos on the van are early versions it could pass for a mid 60s REA vehicle. According to WIKI the Railway Express Company was renamed as REA Express in the 60s. Some photos of prototype 1960s stepside vans shown.

HOW I DID IT...Enhancements to the Lionel N5b cabin car (caboose)

John Sethian ·
I wanted an N5 Crew Express Cabin Car to bring up the rear of my Mail Train. Nobody makes one for the era I am modeling (1955-1956), so I decided to modify a Lionel N5b. This is what I started with: And this is what I ended up with: I used a lot of references for this project: In addition to the Keystone article, I used several online photos of the non express cabin cars. The two that helped me the most are these: Finding period correct photos is a challenge. First of all, no one...

Re: Polar Express Smoke Unit

Moonman ·
If it is the LionChief version it should smoke good. Use Lionel premium or JT's Mega Steam. If it's the conventional/transformer controlled model, not much you can do. The better fluids will help some in that one.

In neutral run voltage up towards max for about 30seconds. Lower voltage to normal around 8-10volts and press direction button. Adjust throttle as necessary. Should smoke for a while since you pre heated the element with high voltage. G

I have the conventional one and it smokes up a storm. So much so that it becomes annoying after awhile. Jerry

Different years have different elements. I believe the later have the coated 30-32ohm resistor. It does not smoke up a storm and never will. G

I've replaced that ceramic resistor for several folks, they were much happier with the results after the replacement. One guy brought a brand new one back and swore the smoke was not working. It was, just needed about 18 volts on the track to get any smoke! With a 22 ohm resistor, he's much happier, he gets smoke at normal operating voltages.

How many drops of fluid are you putting in?

Re: Polar Express Smoke Unit

Jim 1939 ·
Tis true they are not good smokers. if you have overfilled with fluid, you can hold the engine slightly off the rails and power up in forward or reverse. That will blow it out and burn it off.

Here's a couple suitable ones. 20 ohm: http://www.digikey.com/product...PC3W20.0CT-ND/596626 22 ohm: http://www.digikey.com/product...2R/22AECT-ND/2059160 They're cheap, so get several of each and try them.

Spring in first, than piston, and lever sits on piston bottom and presses it up to puff, and the spring pushes it down when lever goes down. These are not great smokers. G

Why didn't Lionel come out with a lion chief PLUS Berkshire?????!!!! im considering buying a MTH berk to replace the lion chief berk that came with our set. It's ok and all but the chuff sound becomes annoying after 5 minutes and the smoke system sucks. I had to modify it in order for it to keep working and I want the cruise control too. Anyone have any luck with MTH locomotives?? I'll be forfeiting the lionchief remote I guess but I'm kinda over that locomotive. I want more realistic...

I am in for a few more add on cars and elves. My kids love the Polar Express (I do too!). Our Christmas layout is becoming a wonderful family tradition. My in-laws make a special trip over to see it when it first goes up. I will be first in line for a Polar Express LC+ engine. I really liked the Legacy PE, but it was just out of my price range. I will also look at the Station and/or the house.

John, for the horizontal bar guards on the end platforms, that bolt to the collision posts, is that solid rod or hollow tube? During my N5e bash, I modeled those bars with rod and flattened the ends with a very fine finish nail set that had a dome-shaped inset head. I used brass rod and the nail set rendered a very nice example of a flattened end with bolt head. Now I'm thinking hollow tube of the same diameter may work better. and oh yes, powerful optics are definitely necessary!

Chris I did what you did. I used a solid brass rod, .032" diameter. I flattened the ends with a 1/4" diameter pin punch. I laid the rod on a stainless steel plate (I just happen to have one), taped the rod down so it won't move and then placed the pin punch over the end of it. I then wacked the punch with a ball peen hammer. The round edge of the punch gave the desirable natural transition from round to flat. I then trimmed off the excess flat region, and rounded the outboard edges. For the...
