Does ANYONE have any "EXPLODED DIAGRAMS of 3 volt and 5 Volt PS 2.0 BOARDS?????

Hello, I am trying to learn a lot more about these fabulous MTH trains that we all know and love!!! I have a deep desire to be able to perform simple repairs for myself, and I have a true passion to learn more about their inner workings. After 37 years, you would think that MTH would have somekind of common repair manual available. But they have kept everything TOP SECRET,exceot for a privileged few people. I want to be able to look at a 3 or 5 volt board, and name the IC components, and know...

I will include what I currently have and the dimensions of my bench work. On the benchwork (labeled TrainTableExact) diagram there are some brown rectangles that roughly correspond to a false wall I plan on putting a backdrop on. It is not exact but very close. Howdy Friends! Here's one that has me puzzled. I have an MTH-Ives 3245R Loco Product # 10-1218-1 (3 volt board) that runs normally in DCS for about 30 minutes then cannot be controlled by hand held remote. It maintains set speed and all and when but when I hit the "read button" it says "Engine not on track" ... Shutting off the power and waiting a minute and powering up again I can regain control. MTH DCS WIFI Premium Purchase for multiple devices

My apologies if this is a repetitive question but my OGR, Google and YouTube searches did not seem to be able to provide me with the answer. We just purchased the DCS WIFI yesterday. We learned today that in order to run Lashups we must buy the Premium app for $24.99. Must I spend $24.99 for all of our phones/tablets using the DCS system or can this be a one time purchase that is shared with our family devices? Additionally, we have ipads and Android phones. Would this need to be a double...

250 watt ZW Transformer Struggles to power 2 trains

Hello everyone, thanks for taking the time to help a fellow model railroader out. I have a two track display that's powered by an old 250 watt ZW transformer and controlled by MTH's DCS with a TIU and remote. I often run MTH protosound 3 engines and occasionally post-war Lionels. I always run the MTH engines in the DCS mode, and set the track voltage for each track manually with the DCS variable setting (set to 18 volts when running MTH engines, use variable voltage when running a post-war...

After following forum posts on how to get the best results from DCS and Legacy, I sold off the things I read was bad and bought the things I read was good and put together a power system I thought would work. After reading the recent posts on DCS/TIU failures I'm no longer sure what I have is good. Part of my problem is I'm good at putting stuff together from instructions/diagrams, but not very knowledgeable on how it works. And the recent discussions have been way over my head. I've stopped...

LED 3 Volt DC Lighting Issues...I'm Stumped & Need Your Help!

Greetings. I've read as many posts as I could on low voltage lighting and thought I was well prepared for the task at hand, but apparently even my electrical wiring expertise has left me clueless! I purchased some LED 3 volt lampposts to add some nice finishing touches on my layout from a vendor from China on eBay. After having issues just getting replacement light bulbs for my Lionel station platforms, I figured I would go to the much more realistic, and hopefully reliable, LED lighting.

Interesting DCS Signal "Problem"??

That caused me some concern, so I got out a PS3 Southern 4-6-2 that was still new in the...

Re: Proto-Sound 3 Powerports?

Do you run conventional or command? Unless you want to attempt to control the markers, I just use track voltage. For the flickering firebox, I buy the LED tea candles from a Dollar Store and remove the flickering LED, cheapest source I've found. They work great for the firebox, gives you the flickering effect for no effort, just a diode, capacitor, and a resistor from track power. You can power the classification LED's the same way. A 1N4003 diode, a 220uf 35V capacitor, and a 1K resistor...

Re: Proto-Sound 3 Powerports?

gunrunnerjohn ·
Well, the short answer is, it's difficult and maybe impossible, depending on the actual installation. That's why I asked. I'm not familiar with the wiring on the PS/3 stuff, but for PS/2, the sound files control the functionality of the various functions, and if they're not in the product, you usually don't have that control. The simple way is to just run them from track power. It may be possible to trigger them from the headlight, but I'm guessing you'd need some electronics as I don't know...

gunrunnerjohn, I will likely use track power to run the lights. Firebox could go either way, track power or smoke unit power. I need to test the smoke unit power output prior to making a decision. I appreciate your insight.

Re: Proto-Sound 3 Powerports?

gunrunnerjohn ·
I'm sure the 10ma or so of power for the flickering light wouldn't be an issue for the smoke unit power supply. They do change the power to the smoke unit based on the smoke output setting, I think that's a PWM signal, but I've never measured it.

Re: DCS and wiring

Rod Stewart ·
Art; Since no one has jumped in yet, I'll offer a few comments. First, not sure why you want to run DCS in passive mode? DCS and Legacy will play well together, with the Legacy base cabled to the TIU using the MTH cable. Each TIU channel will handle 10 amps or 180 watts of power. This is enough to run several trains on each, or at least two long passenger train with incandescent lighting. You could easily run your lower level on one fixed TIU channel and the upper on the second fixed...

Re: DCS and wiring

Barry Broskowitz ·
Art, While DCS is a lot more tolerant of most wiring schemes than is advertised by MTH, star or home run wiring is almost guaranteed to give you the best possible DCS experience. Your proposed wiring scheme may work just fine, however, if you're building a new layout the absolute best way to go is star wiring. The additional increment in effoft is offset by the fact that you'll know that your DCS signal strength will be maximized if you follow the wiring guidelines in The DCS O Gauge...

My question is this- can I get away with 4 blocks and bus wiring otherwise I would need 12 -14 blocks and a whole lot more complicted wiring? I 'd bet you can. Use a tiu channel for each block, Only one way to find out though... hook up one block, then another etc.

thanks to all for your reply and to Barry your book is an excellent source - glad I have it. The reason for using DCS passive is as follows: I run conventional, Legacy and DCS. The starting voltage is to high for modern can motors but with Legacy or TMCC I can start from zero. In the passsive mode I can overlay DCS signal on any channel. At least this is what I am trying to accomplish. I did not realize that I can set variable to fixed. Would appreciate more info. If not, I am sure it is in...

I use common bus with no problem, with frequent out rail drops and the ground for accessories. I have much larger "loops" than you do, and use one TIU channel for each It's not hard to break up into 3-4 blocks per loop, and gives considerable opertaing benefits. Just run a length of 14-gauge (what I'd recommend on a layout of your size) to each blocks and sever the center rail between blocks. Can motors are not current hogs. I don't know why you say they need high starting voltage, You...

Re: DCS and wiring

One way to solve that issue is to stick a diode string in series with a motor lead in the locomotive. A couple of 6A bridge rectifiers will drop that 5V starting voltage to around 2V and give you the slow start you desire.

Re: DCS and wiring

RJR ·
ARt, if you have a Williams that starts that fast at 5 volts, you are inputting too much voltage to the TIU variable, resulting in a highly deformed AC wave. Cut the input voltage wat down and I think you'll be happy.
