Lionel Polar Express ·
Hey Everyone! so guess what, I recently received a little bit of MTH equipment from a boy in my new scout troop (my old one isn't rechartering.) WHOO HOOO! I'm looking at the Lionel Legacy American Freedom Train T1 Northern from their 2016 signature edition catalog, And I just wanna buy it!!! thing is though, it almost $1,700! I don't have $1,700! Batteries for Legacy Controller

Terry Danks ·
My hand control went "dead." Batteries were the originals, branded "GP." Rechargeble NiMH rated at 1.2v. Legacy is about 9 months old. I tried non-rechargeble Rayovac  alkaline AAs, rated at 1.5v (Not in the charging base, of course!). Then some rechargebles I have on hand. Also Rayovac. NiMH rated at 1.2v. Both kinds bring the controller to life, but it isn't working "properly" with either! For example, it won't completely turn off. Holding the power button down blanks the screen but...

Cab-2 remote will not turn on. Any suggestions?

FrankfordJunction ·
We recently moved.  As part of the move, my trains and Legacy system were placed in temporary storage for three months.  The batteries were removed.  It was boxed in its original box and then inside another substantial moving box.  There was no physical damage visible to the boxes or the remote when we retrieved them from storage.   Tonight we unpacked the Legacy system, connected it, powered up the base, installed the batteries in the remote and allowed it to charge...

Genset Switcher (non Vision Line) Starts Up by itself

Stubai ·
I have a United States Army Genset Switcher (6-28382) which is not the Vision Line Genset. I just took it out of the box and loaded it into my Legacy Control System.  As I was testing it, I noticed that after a certain period of inactivity it will shut down by itself (at least the rail sounds do) but it will automatically restart after another period of inactivity from the CAB.  While it's shut down, I can hear a faint beeping sound coming from the engine which increases in...

Adventures in TMCC & Legacy... Trying to master the 455Khz track signal. I've built the test car, and it is finally working..

Big_Boy_4005 ·
I have owned my Legacy base for nearly 4 years. I tried hooking it up when I first got it, and all my trains ran away, an indication that they were getting no command signal and waking up in conventional with 18 V on the rails. I thought I would be brave (and smart) today and give it another shot. I still want and need my TMCC base for my Cab-1's. No biggie, use the "Y" cable. Just to show everyone how I hooked it up, and that I have the correct ends in the right places, I took pictures.

Issue with rev levels on Lionel Legacy NS SD40-2 in DCS

pittsburghrailfan ·
My local train club has a Lionel Legacy SD40-2 (6-38940) which has a minor glitch. When the engine is run with the TMCC handheld, the revs increase or decrease with the speed. When the engine is operated under DCS (via the TMCC base), the revs remain in the idle setting. When I try to go under MENU>SOUND to change this, the remote says the engine is not found when there is power on the track.    What is the issue? Is it somehow related to the drive motor board failure I...

Keep Trains a fixed distance apart

CLM ·
I've got some large loops I'm building around the outside of my layout - probably on the order of 100 feet long by the time all is said and done. How can I have 2 (or 3 or 4) trains run in each loop? I would like the trains to maintain a fixed distance apart so that they can run around without collisions and without human intervention. The only solution I've come up with is multiple Lionel Sensor tracks and some custom software controlling speed via Legacy commands. Is there anything turnkey...

Re: Legacy Cab1L or Legacy 990

You can run them with either, but you don't get access to all the features with the CAB1L. If you are purchasing one system, I'd recommend the Legacy, you can add a CAB1L later and use it with the Legacy base. You can also cable your old TMCC base to the Legacy base and use your existing CAB1 remotes.

Re: Legacy Cab1L or Legacy 990

I believe that in order to have control of your powermaster from either of the Legacy control systems, you'd need to add the Legacy powermaster bridge. Or you could replace your existing powermaster with one of the new legacy powermasters. Also, if you're only running command locos, you can leave the powermaster out of the equation altogether and just use a TMCC direct lock-on to connect your powerhouse to the layout to deliver full 18v at all times. I agree with John in the suggestion of...

If you want to get a legacy engine. Then get the Legacy Cab2. The reason is that it will have full control over all of the features. The Cab1L does not have full control.

There is an older Lionel version made about 12 years ago, maybe you can find that one. Also MTH made a Chessie version of the T-1 about 7 or 8 years ago. The real T-1 was a Reading Lines T-1( I think it was cab # 2102) that was leased and painted in Chessie colors. Lee Fritz

The "older" version of the T1 was made in 1989 or so, and did not come in the American freedom colors. That being said, Mth did make a PS2 premier AFT T1 and a PS3. You can still find the PS3 in stores, but at a little over 1G.

The real Freedom Train was 2101. It sits rusting away OUTSIDE at the Baltimore museum. That is almost as sad as GG-1 #4800 rusting away OUTSIDE at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. I have the MTH Freedom Train in the GS-4 with extra tender and the Reading 2101 AFT. I ordered both the Lionel AFT locomotives as I am a huge fan of whistle smoke. That shouldn't be a problem, since many of the dealers probably ordered "a few" extra's. Just look at all those "extra" BTO ES44's that dealers can't get rid of at "BTO prices". Also to the OP... Nobody's gonna be paying $1700 MSRP for a T1. Gosh, for that kind of money, folks can buy a complete 12-car Atlas-O CZ passenger set!!! Even the T1's $1350-ish street-price has about $450 of "just because it's Lionel" money built into it. This should have been a $900 (street price) locomotive. David

Congrats on receiving your MTH equipment! I am afraid you are going to have to live without that American Freedom Train T1, at least for now. In my adulthood, I have purchased many things that I drooled over in Lionel catalogs when I was young -- they came many years after I first decided I wanted them, but somehow the long wait makes it even sweeter. Just tell yourself, "Someday!" In the meantime, have fun running the trains you have!

Yes I did. That did not solve my problem possibly because I am running Windows XP. I finally did solve my problem by downloading MSWINSCK.OCX from the OCXme.com website and copying it into the Windows/System32 directory. That alllowed me to run the setup application from teh extracted zip file. I now have LSU version 2.

That page exactly describes the problem that I'm having, which is nice. Thanks for the link. However, that page is disheartening: "Wired to each switch". Wires? Yes the Legacy command control system is a data one way system. You can send data to the various engines, modules, etc. but they cannot wirelessly send data back. They are only receivers.

Re: LCS App - Command/Control Switch Status not updating

SandJam ·
Actually, the reason it does not display is because it only recognizes legacy commands through the LCS system and apps. When using the remote switch or the anti derailing feature you are not actually sending a legacy command so the app does not display that change. That's why the stm2 module was created. Hopefully you left your remote controls attached to the switches, because the stm requires a wired connection to one of the terminals the switch controller connects to under the base of the...

Re: Legacy controller problem - help needed

TK301 ·
Thanks for the suggestion Gunrunner. You solved my problem, albeit indirectly... The engine was already in RUN mode, and changing the mode didn't help either (I had to try). But since I had opened up the engine to clean it, I decided to check if the PGM/RUN switch had failed. The switch was working fine (tested by desoldering the leads), but I noticed that the two wires going to the switch were shorted even when disconnected from the switch. I traced the leads back to a 6-pin jack (see first...

Re: Legacy controller problem - help needed

To summarize in the event anyone else runs into this problem, it was not the PGM/RUN switch on the bottom of the engine, but rather the GND/3RD RAIL switch inside the engine.

Re: Legacy controller problem - help needed

gunrunnerjohn ·
That switch, FWIW, is just paralleled with RUN/PGM switch, which also just grounds the PGM/RUN pin on the R2LC. I always wondered why they put a duplicate inside the engine, I guess it's to screw folks up if they bump it. I saw that in an older steamer motherboard a while back, it's a head-scratcher. I suppose it could be so you can work on it, but that seems a little far fetched. The chuff should come from the chuff switch on the axle cam, so that may be a casualty of opening it as well. If...

Re: Legacy controller problem - help needed

Fascinating. Perhaps it is left over from early factory-set days before programming was done from the controller? Regarding the chuff, for some reason, the tender was set to Signal instead of Rail. Switched to Rail, now all works fine. Thanks again Gunrunner!

After reading Barry's latest DCS book, I added 2 TIU/WIU and LCS to my home network. I often run the DCS APP and LCS iCab app on my iPhone at the same time. It is easy to switch between the app. Sometime, the Lionel iCab app requires me to reconnect after switching back to it, but this occurs quickly. Sometimes I had to read again on the DCS app. Since updating the DCS WIU to the latest firmware, I have not had that issue. I use an iPad running the yard on LCS app to control my switches, but...
