Controlling the AMC/ARC Gantry Crane in the LCS App

Bmurphy20 ·
My AMC/ARC Gantry Crane is connected to a LCS Ser2 module.  The Gantry Crane works fine with the CAB2 controller, but not via WiFi using the LCS app on an iPad Air 2.  The crane is programmed in to the Legacy base and the LCS app with engine...

A new module, the STM2 is coming out so that the switch position can be entered into the system and displayed on the LCS app. http://legacy.lionel.com/lcs/L...ucts/STM2/index.html

That page exactly describes the problem that I'm having, which is nice. Thanks for the link. However, that page is disheartening: "Wired to each switch". Wires? The whole point of Command/Control switches is "No Wires"! "If your track switches have built-in command control capability, [...] connect one wire from the STM2 module to the RSC Lights terminal on the switch." Even Command/Control Switches! "With LCS WiFi and the iPad-based Lionel LCS App, you can see the position of your command...

Yes the Legacy command control system is a data one way system. You can send data to the various engines, modules, etc. but they cannot wirelessly send data back. They are only receivers.

Re: LCS App - Command/Control Switch Status not updating

SandJam ·
Actually, the reason it does not display is because it only recognizes legacy commands through the LCS system and apps. When using the remote switch or the anti derailing feature you are not actually sending a legacy command so the app does not display that change. That's why the stm2 module was created. Hopefully you left your remote controls attached to the switches, because the stm requires a wired connection to one of the terminals the switch controller connects to under the base of the...

You'll need an LCS SER2 module for this. The Legacy Y cable won't work. Here's a link to the SER2 manual (see page 13): https://www.lionelsupport.com/...50SER2UsersGuide.pdf

Rudy, Correct me if I am wrong, but he need's the LCS WiFI module and leaves the other half of the Legacy Y-Cable attached to the TIU via the MTH adapter cable. This will enable layout switch/turnout control with the iPad LCS app and train operation with either Legacy Cab-2 or MTH DCS Remote. Page 9 of the instructions, replacing TMCC base with MTH base. (see attached LCS WiFi instructions)

Re: Using Legacy and MTH DCS - Can the Y cable for LEGACY/TMCC be used to connect to MTH DCS

MartyE ·
The "other half" of the Y cable is strictly for the CAB1 base if you choose to use it. He will need a WiFi module and power supply cable (6-81499 LCS DB-9 Cable with Power Supply) but also the SER2 to connect the MTH TIU. The power supply cable would plug into the portion of the "Y" that would of formerly gone to the TIU (serial comm)before the LCS system was introduced. The TIU would then use the SER2 for its interface.

Thank you all very much!! This is exactly what i need to know. In my architecture i will simply daisy chain a pdi cable from my last lcs switch module to a lcs serial module then use the mth cable to connect the tiu. I had previously removed the mth cable to connect the lcs db9/power/pdi cable to the cab2 unit. Then i can run both mth and lionel trains from my mth handheld if i want. I did get my lcs wifi and ipad controlling the layout today with 4 switches. I will add 4 more switches...

Recent Returnee to Model Trains - Thoughts and Impressions

CLM ·
I recently got "Back Into" model railroading. While it was something I did quite a bit as a child (ages 5-18), it's only recently that I've got suitably aged kids and a big enough house to return to an old hobby. :) In the past year, I've effectively started from scratch. These are my impressions of how things have changed. 1. Track. Fastrack. Enh. I needed track (I didn't have any) so sat down and figured out what to use. Surprisingly, it was a complicated decision. I eventually settled on...

Using Legacy and MTH DCS - Can the Y cable for LEGACY/TMCC be used to connect to MTH DCS

Brooksmj ·
I am running Legacy and MTH DCS simultaneously on my layout.  I am upgrading to LCS for automation of switch control.  I like the fact that MTH will control both TMCC engines and MTH engines.  However, I like the IPAD graphical interface app for automating switch control. It is necessary to replace the standard DB9 cable on the Cab2 with the LCS DB9 cablefor Lionel LCS control.  This leaves no way to connect the MTH TIU to the Lionel CAB2.  I am wondering if the...

Legacy, the ARC and LCS

Moonman ·
I don't recall the number of commands that the legacy base can store for a recording. Can someone enlighten me? How many commands can be stored in an ARC recording? Is the ARC going to be updated for the LCS system? It would seem to be a good use of the sensor tracks. If I use an ARC, will the LCS system read that device and allow me to control the recordings through one of the apps? Finally, have I missed an alternative way to create and activate recordings with the new LCS equipment?

LCS App - Command/Control Switch Status not updating

CLM ·
I've got my layout setup with the new Command/Control switches and am enjoying primary operation via the LCS App on my iPad.  However, when a train runs over a switch - causing the switch to change position - the layout screen in the LCS app isn't updated. The switch, for example, will still show as straight even though it just auto-switched over to curved due to a train passing over it. This means that I have to click the switch icon a minimum of 3 times, and often 4 times, to get...

Maybe Jon or Rudy could jump in and shed some light on this. I don't have the gantry crane but if it's like the log loader you loose the fine control of the motors using the app. It's much better using the Cab2.

Sorry to hijack this thread but I just picked up a used amc/arc gantry crane and everything seems to work fine but I noticed as soon as I plug in the power to the controller, the controller and crane both have an electric hum. My old conventional crane didn't do this so I was wondering if this is normal? When I say it has a hum, it hums when sitting idle and the hum only goes away if I completely turn off the transformer.

NEW VIDEO! Lionel NKP C-420 & GP-9 Lash-Up

TrainWizard5972 ·
It has been far to long since I posted a video of my layout. There just hasn't been enough time this summer but now that it is winding down I have more time. I pulled out the only two Lionel Legacy diesels on the roster and performed my first ever Legacy Lash-Up which was surprisingly easy to set up. I have to say that the smoke units are weak so I shut them off. An interesting thing to note is that the first two boxcars are the same but from different manufacturers. They are both NKP...

Very, very cool! If you're ever interested in running the Lionel Legacy NKP ES44AC in a lash up and taking video, just let me know. (It smokes really well.....but I rarely use that feature on my diesels. Only when visitors are over, really.) I'm still slumming it with TMCC so it could probably use some run time with the good stuff. BTW: Is the NKP Flat Car with pipes a Lionel model from a few years back? Regardless, job well done! p.s. - Just noticed the blue NKP hopper with the map on it.

Looks great pulling my TOFCs, similar to what you show behind the 765 in another video. My favorite consist though is a long string of refers. Thanks for sharing. Earl

Glad you like it! I do not own the Lionel Legacy NKP ES44AC all of my Heritage Units are MTH Premier Line but it would be fun to do a collaboration. The NKP Flat Car with Pipes is an Atlas O model from a long time ago. The NKP Map Hopper is MTH RailKing http://mthtrains.com/30-75535 . I got it from Uncle Ray's Trains in Sheffield and they are still available as are most of the new MTH Nickel Plate Road products since they decided to not hire me. Re: Lionel LCS Sensor Track Uses

DaveSlie ·
I currently have 3 Sensor Tracks planted on my layout. I use the custom record / playback option in High Rail to make my own events that are triggered when the engines pass over the Sensor Track. I have also been using them to add engines into the Legacy Base / Remote and bypassing the modules that come with most engines.

Lionel LCS Sensor Track Uses

Gpritch ·
OK, the Lionel LCS Sensor track has been out for some time now and the novelty has probably worn off. There has been many posts on how to modify the sensor for different track platforms/system. I am curious to see how this is practically being used, and even if it being used. If so, how often? Or has it gone by the wayside? Please share your experiences.

Right now my layout is down but when it was up I was using 2 of them and was planning on adding more, I already bought 3 more. Since the High Rail App came out and gave me the ability to program them no matter where they are on the layout these are starting to become a lot of fun. I know another forum member that has a few on his layout.

I think the sensor cars will expand the use of these, then you'll be able to use them with other locomotives and not just the newer Legacy.

New addition - Reverse Loop & MTH NS First Responders Unit

TrainWizard5972 ·
Two new additions! First I am now the proud owner of an MTH Premier Line NS SD60E and my lower level reverse loop is operational. Now all that is left track-wise is to install the yard and engine service tracks. I must say that I really like the Remote/Command switches as they were simple to program plus no extra wiring! As to the engine I think MTH has another winner. The real voice recording of Wick Moorman just makes it that more authentic and believable. What do you think?
