Photos from the Pittsburgh Independent Hi-Railers layout at 2017 Kennywood Holiday Lights

Andy Hummell ·
This coming Friday (11/24/17) marks the opening night for Kennywood Park's annual Holiday Lights event. This year marks a big change for us in that our layout is now in a new location (the Arcade Building) and TWICE as big as those of previous years. It occupies roughly a 42' x 50' area and is done in the shape of a big "U". We normally have a time frame of around 3 weeks to set up, but this year we only had 1 week due to the work being done to install heat in the building. Work began this...

MTH Railking Proto Sound 3 Santa Fe 4-6-0 Drawbar Disconnecting

Ricky S ·
Hello, I have a MTH Railking Proto Sound 3 Santa Fe 4-6-0 steam engine. When I run this engine, sometimes the wireless drawbar connecting the locomotive to the tender disconnects. When it does, the engine jerks, the sounds go out, and lights and smoke go on and off uncontrollably. I turn off the power and re attach it and it is good for another few minutes. Does anyone know if there is a way to make the drawbar connect more stable so it does not disconnect? If not, that's ok. Have a good...

3-D Printing of Train Parts

CountOrlock ·
I read recently that one can buy a 3-D printer for, say, $1000, and that the materials that can be used now include an 85% metal filament, with all the basic characteristics of metal. This suggests that it is even now possible to mass manufacture some parts, such as die cast, from home. Perhaps if one reuses the nickel band that goes around the wheels, you could mass manufacture wheels from home as well. I suspect that the retail industry in toy train parts is looking at a massive shake-up soon.

If you have a PS1 board from MTH corn steam engines then you can replace the old board otherwise this makes a nice static display for your layouts yard or roundhouse area. When it ran was one of my favorite engines. Box is a graded as a 5. No owners manual. See pictures. Asking $125.00 plus shipping from NJ which I suspect would be $15.00. Offers considered. email kbmkam@aol.com for questions.

Atlas C-630 question

NS6770Fan ·
So everyone, I have an Atlas 3 Rail tmcc C-630 bought in 2011, and recently have discovered a problem that is more or less my fault. The smoke unit board in the unit is severely damaged. The board has a “regulator” as I call it, that from my knowledge detects if there is sufficient smoke fluid in the unit and will shut down the unit if there isn’t enough. That piece of circuitry has been charred and burned so that it is barely even on the board anymore. I know that my wicking is also burned,...

Youtube Video: Talley Ober's Insulated-Rail 3-train, 3-rail O-Gauge Automatic Control System Uses No Relays Nor Electronics

James Ingram ·
This new video shows a clever O-gauge, 3-train, 3-rail layout built by a Ridgely, Maryland gentleman named Talley Ober. Talley’s layout uses the “insulated rail” method to automatically control 3 “Thomas the Tank Engine” locos running on the SAME loop of track — using NO relays nor electronics. It just uses 2 simple “insulated rail" type "Control Blocks", which control 2 "Stop Blocks". One wire connects each Control Block to its corresponding Stop Block, so there is a total of 2 "Control...

Rail-Zip treatment

I acquired a K-Line 2 truck shay, but found that it had electrical pickup issues which prevented it from reliable slow speed operation, especially through Fastrack turnouts. An experienced HO operator suggested I might try a product called Rail-Zip on the collector rollers. I cleaned the rollers first with isopropyl alcohol followed by MEK. I then lightly coated the rollers with Rail-Zip and let the shay sit for 24 hours (per the recommendation from Pacer, the manufacturers of Rail-Zip). I...

Why is the center rail so much more grimy?

Railgon ·
I was running at the club last weekend and slowdowns caused by dirty track started to show up. What I have consistently noticed is that the center rail is much more grimy than the outer rails. Why does this happen? I run my finger on the outside rails a couple of inches and very little black grime. Run my finger and inch or two on the center rail and it feels tacky and leaves a heavy black line. I can't believe this would be from over lubrication of the center rail pickup rollers or...

Re: Proto-Sound 3 Powerports?

gunrunnerjohn ·
Do you run conventional or command? Unless you want to attempt to control the markers, I just use track voltage. For the flickering firebox, I buy the LED tea candles from a Dollar Store and remove the flickering LED, cheapest source I've found. They work great for the firebox, gives you the flickering effect for no effort, just a diode, capacitor, and a resistor from track power. You can power the classification LED's the same way. A 1N4003 diode, a 220uf 35V capacitor, and a 1K resistor...

Re: Proto-Sound 3 Powerports?

gunrunnerjohn ·
Well, the short answer is, it's difficult and maybe impossible, depending on the actual installation. That's why I asked. I'm not familiar with the wiring on the PS/3 stuff, but for PS/2, the sound files control the functionality of the various functions, and if they're not in the product, you usually don't have that control. The simple way is to just run them from track power. It may be possible to trigger them from the headlight, but I'm guessing you'd need some electronics as I don't know...

Re: Proto-Sound 3 Powerports?

gunrunnerjohn, I will likely use track power to run the lights. Firebox could go either way, track power or smoke unit power. I need to test the smoke unit power output prior to making a decision. I appreciate your insight.

Re: Proto-Sound 3 Powerports?

gunrunnerjohn ·
I'm sure the 10ma or so of power for the flickering light wouldn't be an issue for the smoke unit power supply. They do change the power to the smoke unit based on the smoke output setting, I think that's a PWM signal, but I've never measured it.

Based on the fact that Lionel has not chosen to reissue Super "O" to date, one could logically surmise that this decision is based upon valid business reasons according to their evaluation.
