California Lionel Club Layouts?

072 PASSENGER CARS WITH 054 OR 060 SWITCHES

Keith Buenzow ·
Does anyone have experience running cars requiring 072 curves running through 060 or 054 switches? Im curious and thinking that the short distance of the curve in the switch may not affect the overall tracking of the longer cars. If a 072 is immediately connected after the switch, than that would compensate for it. I have the atlas CZ cars and have a video on youtube demonstrating them on 072 vs 063 on atlas track. But this is over multiple sections (3 or 4). Am i allows to link to youtube...

The McKeen Car "Cuyamaca" made it home to San Diego County!

I am glad to say the McKeen Car "Cuyamaca" is back in California for the first time in 92 years, when in 1926 she likely left the Yuma Valley Railroad by way of the Southern Pacific Railroad, possibly thought Calif. She is in rough shape, but she can be restored, and it will take quite a few hands to do that, but she will be restored. With your help through donations and time, she can be restored and running around the country before I'm 30 years old, (I'm 17 now.) Here are a few photos of...

Derailment in California 2/10/17

bobequus ·
This story just popped up on Google News for me and caught my eye. Thankfully, no oil. For kicks and grins I decided to locate the area on Google maps. When I switched to earth view, I was taken aback at what I saw. The tracks over the river were not straight. To my eye, they looked like a flex track that someone tried to make straight after being used as a curve, badly. I don't know how old the satellite image is, but usually Google's are a year or less. I'm sure the torrential rains...

How large does a city need to be to support intercity passenger rail?

FECguy ·
In many parts of the world intercity passenger rail is seen as a normal part of everyday life. Unfortunately outside of the Northeast and California that is not really the case. For intercity passenger rail to do well it needs to connect a few densely populated cities and have the speed to compete against driving. I was thinking about this today about how large does a city need to be to support intercity passenger rail? The current city I live in has around 127k people in the city and 256k...

Hopefully there are interlocking signals in case rails don't go up fully. They could use this at the California Rail Museum when they need to move equipment across the active UP tracks.

0-72 Minimum curve layout ideas for a smaller space

GenesisFan99 ·
So it's been a long time since I've had a layout, and I decided it's been too long and tried to lay down plans for a brand new one. However, I have no idea what I'm doing and need a halfway decent layout plan to accommodate 0-72 minimum in about a 7 1/2ft by 12 1/2ft space. Somehow working in an engine servicing facility and a coach yard would be nice as I'm trying to model Amtrak in California. If you haven't guessed already, the 0-72s are for K-Line Superliners if I ever manage to track...

Kadees on Atlas O California Zephyr

Last night I went to put 746's on my Atlas CZ cars and was surprised to see that the holes on the underside of the cars didn't line up with the draft gear box. Amtrak may use buses for part of LA-Chicago trip & NOW the California Zephyr

Amtrak may use buses for part of LA-Chicago trip Travelers may no longer be able to take the train from Chicago to Los Angeles – and through a long stretch of northeastern New Mexico. Buses would take travelers for more than 400 miles of the route. 3rd Rail F3 Pulling Power

I have a 12 car Atlas California Zephyr and was looking at possibly getting a 3rd Rail F3 to pull the 12 cars and two non powered B units from Lionel. Would one powered unit be enough to pull that on 2% grades? I had originally planned on two Atlas powered F units, but those will be a while. I don't have room in my budget for two 3rd Rail engines.

Not in the I.E. anywhere. Our closest options are San Diego or San Pedro....I know, that's not close, because I'm in Moreno Valley and that's our only choices. That's why my dad and I are bulding a 26x17 layout at his house. Though it's not club size, it's very local

I am up in Burbank, but willing to drive as far as OC or Pasadena. The San Pedro layout is awesome, I have visited it. But.. it's High Rail, they do not have any operating accesories. So while I love what they have done, it's not what I am looking for.

Hi Timmy, The San Diego 3-Railers is also hi-rail. It does have operating accessories that can be run by people pushing a button located on the side of the layout. It is well worth a visit to San Diego. Here is the website: http://www.sd3r.org/ I live in the SF Bay Area and I don't know of any layouts in your area that have accessories. I think your best bet to find a club or a private layout in your area would be to contact someone in your local TCA group. Perhaps the staff at The Train...

Hi Timmy, I am out in Simi Valley, not too far from you. I was in Pasadena today but did not have time to visit the Whistle Stop, Train Shack or Roundhouse on the way home. I think O gauge is pretty scarce except for what is created in our homes. Clubs here are hard, I think cause the time commitment. Work and family and then throw in year round sports for the kids and I don't have much time left except late at night. -Ted

Guns, Thanks John, I knew about the Red Conventional & P2 Christmas Tin Plate 249E but not the P3 Christmas Train, maybe Jeff should have purchased a P2, I have never had any problems with my P2 Tin Plate Trains. I may have to try to pick up a P2 Blue Comet 249E Passenger Train, they are serious cool! I missed out on the P2 249E Christmas Train set last year, they were all sold out. Jeff, You may just want to send your 249E P3 to Guns or GGG unless your engine is still under warranty!

Re: Kadees on Atlas O California Zephyr

AGHRMatt ·
The mounting holes are set up for the Atlas couplers and boxes. The holes are threaded for 2mm screws. You can "force" a kadee plastic box onto an Atlas car by carefully threading in a 2mmx8 screw about 1/3 of the way on the rear hole of the box, then pushing the box inward as you thread in the second screw. The box has enough play to squeeze in. You should also use a shim from MicroMark to get the coupler height right.

I used a simple but very effective way to mount Kadee 805s to the car. I bolt the coupler shank direct to the truck arm as pictured here. The 805s have a long and meaty shank. Use a dab of locktite or a caged nut. If you do not have wide radius curves I'de leave it alone. Good luck, Ron H
