Busy fingers and your layout

rrman ·
Today had father and two young boys in to see the layout. Figured they were old enough to know rules. One proceeded to push an auto onto the track shorting out the layout. The other manually threw a switch just to see if loco would "crash" into other on siding, fortunately the siding was un-powered and loco stopped short much to his disappointment. A few weeks ago a grandfather bought grandson to see trains. Kid was more interested in pushing autos around and gouged a rut into foam street.

3ftx3ft O-27 Layout Plan. Thouhts On This Track Plan??

Building a new toy train layout using some of my dad’s postwar Lionel track and manual switch and my grandfather’s prewar Marx manual switches. Made part of this in Any Rail 5 and in Photo Shop Elements for my Lionel O27 3ft by 3ft Layout. These drawings are rough ideas and are not to scale. I might change the buildings and not sure the spot to add a road on the layout. The buildings will be printed card stock buildings. Found an Inexpensive Light Effect for my Tombstone Southwest Layout

I happen to be in CVS today and found a toy spinning rabbit left over from Easter. When you press the button it the lights come on and start to spin. Thought it might make a good addition of my layout if I took it apart and built it into my Oriental Saloon. Turns out it makes a nice night light effect for the layout. It was simple to take apart and wire in a toggle switch which I have on my fun board. Only cost $1.50 on sale. Here's a brief video of the effect. Tombstone Southwest RR

How to Draw a Scale Layout Design?

ES44AC ·
In designing track plans for a hopeful future layout, I've found scale drawings to be important in making the design accurate. I've tried to make scale drawings with ruler, say 1/2 inch = 1 foot on blank white paper, but that doesn't seem right. Most track plans I've seen are drawn on graph paper with one or four boxes representing a square foot. What am I doing wrong?

ILLUMINATED "BURN BARREL" (S & O)

CUSTOM "O" DECALS ·
To be offered soon at LBR an "ILLUMINATED BURN BARREL". This is an item that few if any in model railroading have ever seen on any layout. An LED illuminated burn barrel. Back in the day and still in use in some rural areas of the U.S. folks burned their trash in converted 55 gallon steel drums. During the depression in cities they were used to warm the street people in winter and some cooked their food over them when they had food. The rail yards were full of them to warm the yard crews in...

Re: overhead lighting for layout room

AmFlyer ·
LED's could be painted since the top surface stays cool. I would go to a photography store and buy some Mylar or gel filters used for this purpose. Filtering an LED may not work as well as you hope because unlike an incandescent the emission spectra is very "spikey" and if the filter color matches one of the dips in the spectrum the light output will be dim. Blue LED's are readily available, look at superbrightleds.com as one of many sources. They are not prohibitively expensive. The strip...

Re: overhead lighting for layout room

lehighline ·
I have LEDs in track lighting in my train room. I thought I would have to go the blue filter route as well. But just try it with dimming the LEDs. The dimmers I bought are designed for LEDs, and the bulbs are dimmable as well. But even at the lowest setting on the dimmers, they are still lit. It gives a very nice night time effect, I think. The lighted buildings and Miller Engineering signs really stand out. One thing I did which may help: The sky is painted cobalt blue, not sky blue. Chris LVHR

Eric, I stopped at Home Depot today -- they do have blue LEDs -- but they are not dimmable -- which is a deal killer for me.

Re: overhead lighting for layout room

IRON HORSE ·
My search so far has lead me to Menards for standard flood light type bulbs that are dimmable. They havce great prices and it seems the best option at this point. I'd prefer LEDs not just for the energy saving but because they don't burn hot. I may experiment painting white LEDs, though, as one guy above suggested (thanks, Tom!).

I have an extended part of my train room that spills out into the family room for a seasonal display (Halloween, Christmas, Summer). I bought a simple 2 lamp outdoor flood light fixture to put above and it costs $10. It is, at core, the simplest track type lighting. My plan is to wire it with a dimmer switch with blue lights (sorry, ad nauseum about the blue lights). You have to provide a square electrical box, but you need that, anyway. Otherwise they have those little high energy track...
