Quick and Easy Yucca Plants for your scenery

baggetta ·
My Tombstone & Southwest Railroad layout needs lots of plant scenery native to the desert. So I'm always on the lookout for ways I can add to it. In my flower garden I noticed that the seed pods from my cornflowers looked a bit like those luxuriant yucca plants you see in desert surroundings, so I set about trying to make some mini yuccas for my layout. As you can see from the image they didn't come out too bad. This is a picture I used as my model. A real yucca...

Trainmaster Command Set (6-12969) and Powerhouse PH-1 (6-12866)

George Gilligan ·
I'm setting up a relatively small layout with the above for power. I have 8 Lionel switches powered by a separate transformer. I bought the above new in 1995 and have just now begun to do the layout and use them. My question is; what is the proper way to connect the Trainmaster to the track? It has only one terminal, the U terminal and the input plug from it's power source. A second question is; with the PH-1 as power, can I also use a Powermaster (which is new) and connect the PH-1 into the...

Telegraph for my Tombstone Layout

baggetta ·
The telegraph came in to Tombstone in 1881 (same year as the famous gunfight). I was able to pick up an old telegraph key so I decided to add it to my Tombstone layout. It has a loud enough click so I wired some lights into mini covered wagons and placed them about the layout so that they light up with each click. Here's a short video demoing how they work. Adds a bit more realism to my layout.

New RRinabox Layout

Mike Donahue ·
I ordered and just received one of the new RRinabox Quick Line layouts. The kit builds a two train 40"x64" 027 layout. Those not familiar with RRinabox kits, the layouts are built out of foam core. The Quick Line kit is different in that the parts are pre-cut and pre-colored. The kit builds two sections that are butted together, but which also nest together for storage. Years ago, I built the RRinabox 500 series MTH layout, and I decided to give this new kit a try. I have lots of trains that...

Hi everyone, ok I think I have my new layout ready for some review and constructive criticism. I am moving up from my 4 by 8 layout to a larger space. The new area is roughly 10.5 feet by 6.5 feet (82 inches). I can go longer than 10.5 feet on the wall side (labeled below) down the circus area. It might become a yard area later. There are door openings on both ends making access very good. I also included an inside walk around area as well. The bridges identified on the plan will be a...

12' x 8' Fastrack layout

Hey everyone, I'm a 17 year old from Texas, and my local train store (Hobbytown USA) recently closed down. There is no way for me to acquire the money to build this layout, but I have always been interested in trains and love to tinker with designs from time to time. The layout I have designed is a Fastrack layout whose minimum curve is O48, so that it will accomodate O42 trains without too much overhang. One switch is O72, and there are a few O60 and O72 curves. The layout is two layers.

Over a couple of years as his imagination led him here and there the client added to his layout and subtracted from his layout and added to his subtraction. And then he traded it all in on an entirely new layout. In 2007, a potential client in Tennessee asked Clarke whether he could rework the Massachusetts layout for him adding a the beautiful seaport he had...

Semi-permanent layout construction allows for changes/modifications to layout.

pro hobby ·
Semi-permanent layout construction allows for changes/modifications to layout. No reason to be bored if you can modify your layout from time to time. This approach uses benchwork that can be easily reconfigured. Although it would not be considered a "modular" layout it does provide for expansion of the overall size by adding new sections to the layout. All wiring is made using color coded wiring harnesses which permit plug and play interconnections. All connections to the track use 16 gauge...

4 x 14 track plan

So, I have a typical garage 4 x 8 oval with a few sidings in the middle. I can't go any wider, but can extend it for a few feet. I'm planning a 4 x 14 layout. I like variety in running, so added a few features: twice around configuration, reversing loop, sidings for rolling stock storage, and sidings for locomotive storage. For two of the 20" straight sections, I will insert insulated/accessory activation fastrack for automated gate crossings. My rolling stock is almost exclusively auto...
