Has anyone found a fix for this yet? Still reporting no TIU found and I am connected to the MTH WiFi (has no internet). Android version 7. This use to work. Am curious as it seems that the Version update for he Kernal is what has caused the issue. Am trying to figure if there is a way to reverse it to previous Kernal before January 24, 2018. Also using the premier app. Phone (android) works great. Just would like the bigger screen.

Rick, thank you for your thoughtful response. I too am having sight issues and I'm not as steady as I once was. That said, I agree with you wholeheartedly, this forum is terrific. I have spent a lot less time researching and experienced far fewer headaches because of all the terrific advice I've received from the many experts on the On-Line Forum. They've also given me confidence to do a lot of my own minor repairs. Best, Lou

Re: MTH E8's have arrived at MrMuffin'sTrains - these look good!

breezinup ·
Well, yes, that's what all the discussion has been about. But who knows why MTH did what they did? It certainly wasn't what they had advertised. The pictures of the engines in the 2016 Vol. 1 catalog, where the pictures of the engines are on the cover as well as inside, show NO ditch lights on any of the engines. And while most of the engines ended up with ditch lights, yet the Wabash has none. (!?) Also, the description of the engines in the catalog says: "The E8 returns to the Premier line...

PRRronbh ·
The 2016 volume 1 MTH catalog cover depicted a replication of the NCTM "Streamliner" Event here with toy train graphics. The Erie 833 had no ditch-lights and the UP 849 had duel headlights and no ditch-lights. On the catalog pages none of the E's had ditch-lights and was NOT clear if the Wabash had duel headlights. Right after seeing this catalog I emailed one of the MTH VP's suggesting that they make the "Event" units both with and without ditch-lights as appropriate. They had the tooling...

Thanks Ron for the clarity in this post! As I said earlier, I believe that MTH was trying to recreate the engines that were at the Streamliner at Spencer event. Why do people on this forum get bent out of shape over ditchlights? It's been proven time and again with pictures that the engines DO exist with ditchlights. My opinion is vote with your wallet. If you don't like the engines with ditchlights attached, don't purchase it...............rogerw.

Re: MTH Premier Pullman Green Heavyweights

I don't think they did. The only add on set I see is a Combine/Diner. I am not sure if Pullman ever made diners anyway nor baggage cars. Those usually had the name of the RR that pulled them. K-Line has done add on cars lettered for Pullman. One simply named Diner, the others, Night Route and New Orleans. They also did a did car set of 18" cars lettered for Pullman which only rarely come up. They match up well with MTH cars. They come up on the auction sites every now and then. I guess the...

You could remove the scale two rail wheel sets, install three rail hi-rail wheel sets and run a wire from the dome car's roller pickup wire to the appropriate wire in the observation car. Another option is to buy a K-Line, MTH or Williams three rail passenger car for its trucks and use them but as you stated that may demand cosmetic surgery. John in Lansing, ILL

Another option. You may want to check Timko Repair Depot . They replaced a motor on a K-Line B6 for me. They have the ability to remove the worm gear and flywheel and re-install them on a new motor. I had also done motor upgrades on older Weaver E8's, using Timko motors with the appropriate flange and worm gear.

Luke, thank you for your detailed and thoughtful response to my dilemma. The odd thing about when my engine began to smoke, was that power was on the tracks, via the TIU, but the engine was not powered up through the remote. I was running another engine, a steamer, and the steam was engaged through the remote unit. Because steam was heavy, I didn't notice the smoking 0 6 0 engine, that is until the awful smell came through. I took the 0 6 0 off the tracks, but the damage was done. The MTH...

Re: GS-4 Imperial or Premier

RLaHaie ·
Imperial or Premier? I struggled with this question for a number of years as my disposable income grew and my attention turned back to trains. In the end I am not sure that I made the best decision since it has limited my selection somewhat and (since I went scale) required more space to operate my trains. The Imperial line from MTH is really nice and they have done a great job at the selective compression resulting in fine looking models. And you can run your old Lionel stuff with it...

What rolling stock do you plan to run, Railking or Premier? That could possibly make a difference to you? But with only one train running on a ceiling layout I have to wonder if one could tell the difference between the Imperial and Premier engines or rolling stock? I am not sure I could tell unless the two types were side by side, but I am not train expert either. It took me a while to figure out the differences between all these things when I got back in the hobby in 2011. Also, I know...

Re: Changing out wheel sets?

Engineer-Joe ·
The wheel sets can... not be seated fully, causing an issue like what I believe to be that you're describing. I have not seen a warped truck casting yet after working on a lot of MTH engines. When you remove the bottom cover on the 3/2 trucks, you can see the offending one usually. I also place a straight edge against the wheels to make sure they're all in line. Make sure the "bushings" are in the correct clock position to make contact with the small tab cast in the truck, underneath them.

MTH Premier Line noises from motors?

Pittsburger ·
Hello all, I have two MTH premier line engines that are fairly new (within the past 8 months). I've noticed a kind of squeaking noise coming from both locomotives that sounds like the motor. Let's just say the motors are not silent and are especially noticeable when running the locomotives without sound. I have had a few railking and imperial locomotives for much longer and never noticed such sounds. Neither engine has reached the "maintenance required" point yet. I have oiled both...

Are MTH Premier Locos with scale wheels considered P48 (true scale)?

pittsburghrailfan ·
I recently watched a Youtube video about an extremely well-done layout in P48. Much of the equipment appeared to be scratchbuilt, so I was curious if MTH's Premier line, if equipped with scale wheels, was considered true P48 by hobbyists, or if the trucks were still not gauged correctly.

The flywheel is turning 20 to 40 time faster than the drivers. Same with shaft if unit has one. So John's comment about frequency is spot on. If it increases with speed, it probably is drive line related, but gear, linkage are items to look for. Opening won't void warranty, pinching a wire reassembling would....if manufacturer wanted to draw a hard line. G

Great photos. Enjoy your set. I pre-ordered one. I already have the extra tank cars for it...one being black. Very excited about this set. For the flatcar, I purchased a large Atlas O TTX car, added a K-Line IOS tank load and a MTH short container. Also picked up some tank dome parts to add to the car with styrene tubing. Should look fine.

ON30 and ON3 are both valid track gauges. However, very little common carrier, if any, was built to 30 inch gauge in the USA. I think there has been quite a bit of industrial narrow gauge at 30 inches. 3 Foot gauge (36 inches) was used a lot for common carrier shortlines in the 1870s and so. There was a major movement to build "narrow" gauge lines because they were cheaper to build and maintain in every way. Colorado had over 1700 miles of narrow gauge at one time. The East Broad Top in...

Thanks for the explanation. I knew Colorado had narrow gauge, but I didn't know which size it was. I've heard of the Broad Top, but did not know it was narrow gauge. Also didn't know about any of the others you mentioned. My LHS has some On30, but I am not sure I have ever even seen any On3? (Pretty sure I have those correct here?). Maybe I'll ask them about that one. I really am 'prototypically challenged', wasn't kidding about that. If it looks like a train and runs well on my Atlas track...
