Switcher Saturday: 2018-Apr-07

Murnane ·
It's #SwitcherSaturday Time!!!! Lots of us out there love switchers (shifters, docksiders, yard goats, critters, etc.), so lets keep #SwitcherSaturday (a.k.a. SWSAT) rolling! This week on the Ri.C.H. (Richmond, Chesapeake, Hudson) R.R. - a little porter (B&O #16) is shuffling cars around the yard. Also, I took this video the other day of the current status of the layout, most of my time recently has gone into trying to clean the basement floor though, since I didn't realize how dirty it...

Nice but I don;t think a real Porter would run that fast. Looks like a nice scratch build project on a switcher mechanism.

These are Great little engines. I really like mine. I wonder who ended up with the molds after the K-line / Lionel dust up? I would be happy to get a few more of these for my railroad but nobody has made more of them in the almost 10 years since the end of the brief K-Lionel period.

It's fun playing around with this engine, but I guess the smoke apparatus is kaput, since I have been running it now for some time but can't get any smoke from it. Al B.

Re: My New Cute Porter Steam

It has fan driven smoke, so it should smoke pretty well. Note that it takes probably at least 20 drops of fluid to wake it up.

I've looked a couple of times and I can't see anyone driving or stoking that little engine. Expect a visit from the government and the union folks.

More importantly, there is no place for any coal to stoke the engine! That's why I included a little coal car. All I need is a fireman with a shovel.

Thanks G. I pumped in more fluid and ran it for about 15 min. I had it pulling a flat car. Suddenly noticed it derailed. When I checked I found that the screws came off the coupler and it was sitting along side the track. Fixed the problem and started running. Low and behold it started smoking. Thanks for the help. Hard to pull without being coupled! Glad you got the smoke going, it's actually a pretty good smoker.

My New Cute Porter Steam

baggetta ·
Was checking out eBay last week when I accidentally came upon a little engine that caught my fancy. I thought it was rather cute so I put in my bid. And low and behold I actually won it without a struggle. It is the Lionel K-line 6-21230 Ringling Brothers Barnum Baily Porter Steam. Well I got it day before yesterday and have been having a fun time just watching this cute little machine run the tracks of my Tombstone Southwest layout. I thought you might enjoy seeing it run around crazy so I...

K-Line Porter - Upgrades

UPMav#488 ·
Hello, So some where in my collection of trains is a K-Line Porter that I had purchased in 2009?2010ish. I have always been befuddled on how Porters were able to stay fueled. Where was the coal stored if there was no tender or coal bunker. Anyway, When I lived in Alaska many years ago, My father worked on helping to restore the Tanana Valley Railroad Engine Number 1 ( which was a porter). They designed and built a tender for it and I have been looking at designs for Porters online and I...

First of all, I am amazed at your commitment to prototypical accuracy and at the speed with which you are getting through a whole series of cars. Excellent job all around. Second, I have been there - I don't mean doing a 3rail sleeping car but starting over when the result of detailing an interior is not what you want. FWIW, my theory is that 3rail passenger cars, even the 21" versions, are really only a representation of the real thing, not a true scale model, so everything we do with them...

Thanks Hancock, I have 6 passenger cars in this K-Line set. In the beginning I only planned on posting the RPO car. But after all the positive comments from this O-Gauge forum on the RPO car it gave me the encouragement to post the rest of the cars on the forum. I have been an unregistered guest on this forum for over 2-years but only joined last month because I wanted to give back to the O-gauge community. I have seen posts from beginners like me to 1/48 scale master builders in this forum.

Happy SwSat! Great start as usual guys. Rich Im glad to see that you look like you are having fun at your new club. This past weekend at my club the NYSME in Carlstat NJ I was holding down the Mainline Dispatch seat for a few hours at the Holiday open house. So I was running a bit faster than switching speed. A Susquehanna SW9 was pulling a speaker with music and gondolas with presents around the layout. They are open again this weekend. I am posting a few picks of the Lionel 0-4-0 from the...

It is Saturday morning, December 2, 1949, and the little 44 tonner is moving a R50 reefer to classification track 3 where the morning express train is being put together. The engineer has been operating "the Baby" for two months now and is happy with its dependability and ease of operation, but concerned about its performance moving heavy consists. He does miss his B6sb.

I agree this is a cool looking car! Weaver made these parts boxcars with the names of several auto makers including Tucker and Packard. I have the Tucker parts car. Too bad Tucker didn't make autos long enough to be able to ship parts in boxcars. At least in my imaginative world Tucker auto manufacturing is thriving!

Good morning Rich. I like your new layout. Suddenly it's 1950! Providence & Worcester GP38-2 #2007 was acquired new from EMD in November 1980. The P&W railroad was incorporated in 1844 and came under the ownership of Genesee & Wyoming, Inc. in 2017. P&W #2007 has since been transferred to another G&W property. The model is by MTH with PS-3.
