Exactly! The new tooling Premier Train Master blows the old Premier tooled away. The old tooling appears to be the now RK version. Here are some shots of my Southern and Pennsy new tooling Train Master(s). Ron

Re: Calculating overhang on MTH Premier articulated locomotives

Tim Stevenson ·
Thanks for your reply Bobby!! I had bought a Premier MTH Challenger but the boiler over could not negotiate the tunnel portal wall on O72+ curve. I had to sell the train. I would like to run other Premier articulated engines but am very apprehensive to purchase another. I may have to stick to Imperial models on the articulated locos. My Premier Q2 4-4-6-4 can negotiate the curve fine. I figure that most fixed wheel steam engines will fit if the Q2 fits!! I was hoping there was a way to...

Re: Hey MTH, how about some of these?

gg1man ·
As far as I remember these cars where part of many passenger trains. I seen as many as five or six cars leaving the old 30th street station Post Office in Philly, behind a full contingent of passenger cars. I think they usually ran between Philadelphia and Chicago. I really can't say for sure what the schedule was but they made a good looking train.

I took a train trip to Dallas back in 1999. On the return leg between Dallas and Fort Worth, the train had 13 of them behind the main passenger train (pulled by a pair of P42's) with an F40PH pushing. I'd never seen that many parcel cars on an Amtrak train before. They cut the parcel cars off in Fort Worth, then switched our sleeper out in San Antonio where it was put on the tail end of the westbound Sunset Limited.

That's why I said "Good Luck". It's always a bit of a hit-and-miss proposition, but it's unusual that everybody listed is out of stock. I give MTH kudos for offering this type of inventory management system -- even if it's up to the dealers to update it so it reflects an accurate view of a particular store's inventory. But ya just can't force dealers to do what they don't want -- or think they need -- to do. I takes all kinds out there. Some dealers update it religiously. Others NEVER even...

Re: Calculating overhang on MTH Premier articulated locomotives

Sparky74 ·
I can't remember which magazine it was in the past 2 yrs but there was an article on this. Once the max distance of the boiler swing was known a tool was made. If I remember correctly it was basically a truck from a train car with a small flat piece of wood with a hole drilled in it. In this hole was a pencil to mark the top of the layout. I'm google searching like crazy for it but maybe I can find which magazine it's in here at home. Keep in mind as well that if you have 2 curved sections...

Re: Wire MTH ITAD to Passenger Platform

Got it NelsonW. Thanks. The ITAD's connections are different, but it is now clear. I usually don't have trouble following a manual but will test it out on Monday when I'm back in the train room.

Well, it sure would be nice to once-and-for-all get this matter settled. The question of hooking up the Scaletrax ITAD to the Operating Platform keeps coming up with no clear documented resolution! Part of the problem may be what appears to be the wording in the loose paper instruction sheet vs. the PDF instruction manual : As shown, the paper instruction sheet suggests Terminal D can be attached to the ITAD Common. My guess is this is incorrect and should be crossed off; it does not appear...

Re: MTH Blue Comet

Ted S ·
Just as well. These locos cannot be converted- the wheels aren't removable. The "scale wheels" versions have a product number ending in -2. These aren't a viable option for most 3-railers or Hi-railers; personally I wouldn't bid on or buy any. When in doubt, ask, and if the seller isn't forthcoming, run away!! BTW I saw your other post. As far as I know there are no mechanical differences between the PS1 and later versions. The PS1 was produced in far larger numbers. So if you can get one...

Smoke unit for MTH 30-4239-1 NS First Responder

Jeff Boswell 052018 ·
I am new to this and have tried finding the answer myself but can a smoke unit be added and which one for the 30-4239-1 NS First Responder engine? And I have one more question about doing the same thing but an older unit 30-2114-1 with PS1.

Re: MTH PS-3 steam engine and postwar ZW transformer

It should be able to operate conventionally under a postwar ZW.

Re: MTH PS-3 steam engine and postwar ZW transformer

Doug F ·
Does the engine have to be set by the DCS controller to recognize conventional operation with the ZW?
Reply

Re: MTH PS-3 steam engine and postwar ZW transformer

RJR ·
No. It should come up in conventional because there is no TIU to send it the "watchdog" signal that tells it to come up in DCS mode. I'm really not the one to help on this topic, since I don't run MTH locos in conventional mode. I am aware that sometimes you have to hold the direction button, or cut power, for a few seconds to get a reaction. A quick cut won't do it. Try holding the direction lever on the ZW for varying durations of power off.

Re: MTH PS-3 steam engine and postwar ZW transformer

Doug F ·
Yes I have already tried that, just do not know if the problem is the ZW or in the engine.

Re: MTH PS-3 steam engine and postwar ZW transformer

Gregg ·
What does the manual say for a conventional reset . Never mind you don't have a bell button with the ZW. However there is way with the dcs remote. Set up a var channel to var mode. turn off the dcs signal to that channel . scroll the voltage up to around 10 volts and try the conventional reset using the dcs remotes whistle and bell button combination.

You need to do a conventional reset. Maybe locked in neutral for conventional. G

Re: MTH PS-3 steam engine and postwar ZW transformer

Doug F ·
GGG, I dug out the z-500 from an old set and reset the engine in conventional mode with the bell and whistle buttons. This unlocked the engine and it ran fine in conventional. Out of curiosity I ran it in command mode and then tried conventional, it locked up and had to be reset again. This makes going from the main layout to the Christmas tree a little frustrating. Any idea why it has to be reset to run in conventional after it has been run in command?

Careful - MTH has made a tiny "bantam" version of this loco, and a very nice sub-scale but still substantial Rail King (Now RK Imperial, I guess) version of this loco.

Ditto. The RK MT-1105; bell/horn "mute". A great puller. I would strongly suggest the Imperial version. Premier level details for smaller layouts.

New in box MTH Premier Union Pacific USRA steam loco with Proto 2.0 20-3270-1 from 2007 Volume 1 catalog. I received this engine the day after Christmas. My family wanted to join in on my hobby and worked out a deal on eBay. That said, upon opening the package – brand new box, never opened, with warranty card included, the engine did not work as anticipated. It was placed gently on the track, added into the DCS, started up immediately, and we waited about a minute or two before running the...

Steven Michael ·
Not sure if they're *identical*, but these Amtrak express boxcars look pretty close to MTH's 50' high cubes. These would be a nice modern accompaniment to the older style express boxcar they produced a few years ago. Weaver made these quite a while ago but they were pretty inaccurate.

MTH PS-3 steam engine and postwar ZW transformer

Doug F ·
Merry Christmas!  I am new to this.  I have a Southern Ps4 steam engine with PS3.  It runs fine in command mode on my layout.  However, I am trying to run it for my nephew on an oval of track powered by a postwar ZW.  I get lights and whistle, but can get no directional movement.  Can this engine by operated by a ZW in the conventional mode?  Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Doug

Calculating overhang on MTH Premier articulated locomotives

Tim Stevenson ·
Is there a method to calculate the boiler overhang on MTH Premier articulated locomotives? I had contacted MTH about possibly including the overhang from the center rail information. I was told someone would get back to me but I not heard anything in several months. I have a couple of tunnels that are on curves and even though the curves are O72+, the tunnel portal can be problematic with articulated locomotives. Any insight would be helpful. Thank you!!

MTH Blue Comet

I’ve wanted A Blue Comet for quite some time. I finally saved enough to buy one new in the box from a man on e-bay. Came in and looked good but it was not new as the seller stated it was. Kind of blew that off. Put it on my 14x12 layout with fast track switches and all. Well I found out it has scale wheels and won’t stay on the track! I’m sure those of you who have been around know this. I did not. Wrote back and forth with the seller and basically said too bad! On my layout I have three...
