Re: Can you control 2 mth starter sets independently (each with its own loop of track) on the same layout by using different starter set commander remotes?

GTW Don ·
My understanding is the DCS Commander Remote (that comes with the starter sets) will operate any DCS engine (that has the factory default settings.. i.e., that hasn't had its ID # changed via a "regular" DCS system). And no, I don't think you can customize a DCS Commander Remote to work with a specific engine. Think of the DCS Commander Remote as basically a "conventional" transformer control that's wireless (& has a few more buttons that allow for access to PS2/3 features... but NOT...

Your parents' first train?

The recent "Your first train set" thread produced a lot of interesting stories. I'd like to add to that with a discussion of your parents ' first train set. How many still have their fathers' or mothers' first trains? I just realized that I don't have any pictures of my mother's set (I'll work on that), but here's a shot of Dad's Lionel 252 and its accompanying passenger cars. Lionel Legacy Engine Set-up Help

Karl Anderson 022117 ·
I’m quite new to the hobby and have been slowly putting my 3 rail layout together for the last 10 months. This past week I was finally able to power it up and start running some trains, which was the best feeling after months of research and time spent learning how to get my layout to come to life. I’m running both MTH DCS and Lionel Legacy and things were going great as I had successfully added both an MTH & Lionel Legacy engine; however, when I went to add an additional Lionel Legacy...

Who made this box car?

My eagle eyed wife found this Heinz box car at a train show, but darned if I can identify who made it. Sure looks alot like a Lionel el-cheapo starter set car by the couplers and trucks, but there is no manufacturer marks or numbers anywhere inside or outside the shell, other than the rubber stamping (says car inspected 1972 in fine print.) Wife thought someone might have repainted and decaled, but I can't see decal shine or edges. Shell ends are held onto the frame by clinch snaps, no...

Unsure what is meant by blocks. I simply wanrt to know if I put each of the starter set's tracks on the same platform at the same leve, (naturally I'll have to add some straight track sections to one starter set's tracks so that set will have a larger loop to go around outside the smaller inside loop from the other set. With this configuration, can i control the engine on eack loop of track with a different commander remote? Or are the two remotes programmed generically and by pressing one...

If you have two separate loops of tracks (forget about "blocks" or anything else), and you have each loop set up to be controlled separately by a DCS Remote Commander set (one handheld remote and one receiver for each loop), you will be able to use just one of the remote handhelds to control either or both of the loops. HOWEVER, you will want to space the two receivers far enough apart, or "isolated" from each other in some way so when you do transmit a signal from the handheld remote to one...

I tried that, but unless you had some really good spacing, the IR bounces off the walls (or something else) and controls the wrong train at times.

The solution to that, if it occurs, might be to construct a "shield" of some sort around the two receivers (both of which would still be placed as far apart as possible) so you really would have direct aim between the handheld and the respective receiver. I don't have the space available on my layout for two...

If you're in one place, shielding them sounds like a plan. I just was fooling around with them on two loops, so they were wide-open. I actually always planned on getting the DCS system, but you've seen how well that is going in another thread!

Don't give up on that full DCS system, John! Since I started using that system on my other layout some time ago, I haven't looked back. However, I must admit that I'll be picking up the Lionel Legacy system this weekend and will also be installing it on that layout. I want to be able to compare and contrast for myself the advantages and limitations of each system. The "older" DCS system I have will be replaced with the updated version that is still in its box, and that older system will be...

Re: ??RE: What should I expect to pay for this used MTH steam engine and cars??

Mark V. Spadaro ·
Check product availability on the MTH Product Locator. That will give you an idea of scarcity. You'd have to find a price point between $475 and $950 that you're comfortable with. If possible, since not new, ask to see & run the item before buying. Remember, an out of warranty repair is always a possibility for an MTH train, and that has to be a big factor in your pricing.

Something else to consider is weather it is a dealer or a individual that is selling the item. Usually, you get a better deal from an individual, however a dealer may have gone over the item to insure that it is in good condition. You must weigh the facts. If it is rare and hard to come by, it may command a higher price due to supply and demand. Frank

The MTH product locator indicates that no dealers have the locomotive in stock. That doesn't mean that a dealer somewhere in this vast country doesn't have one, but it's sure going to be a bit of a hunt. If you have actually seen that locomotive that you have your eyes on--the one with three hours of run time--you should be in a relatively good position to deal a bit with the seller. If the locomotive is really in like-new condition in all respects, and with just three hours of run time, I...
