072 PASSENGER CARS WITH 054 OR 060 SWITCHES

Keith Buenzow ·
Does anyone have experience running cars requiring 072 curves running through 060 or 054 switches? Im curious and thinking that the short distance of the curve in the switch may not affect the overall tracking of the longer cars. If a 072 is immediately connected after the switch, than that would compensate for it. I have the atlas CZ cars and have a video on youtube demonstrating them on 072 vs 063 on atlas track. But this is over multiple sections (3 or 4). Am i allows to link to youtube...

3rd Rail Passenger Car Couplers

Rev Richie ·
I want to replace the couplers on my 3rd Rail Lehigh Valley John Wilkes Coaches.  The OEM couplers do not open while in motion but they don't keep the cars together either.  I haven't been able to figure out why the geometry of the couplers allow them to slip apart. Can anyone suggest a coupler that will work well on 3rd Rail coaches? Thanks Rev Richie

Anyone know any information on These Passenger Cars?

kennyb ·
Hey Guys, I picked these up recently, and wanted to know if anyone could tell me more about these Passenger cars. The Boxes say:Rail Chief Products Co.NY,NY. Their Boxes also indicate this company sold telephone poles,Water Towers,Platforms and Signal Towers also. These kits just seemed to be different,so I picked them up. The bottoms of the cars are made out of an old masonite board type material.  There is no provision on the truck for lighting, although I think I will put some LED's...

Help with MTH 0-27 Passenger Cars

barnun ·
Ok folks, I give up. I've tried several searches on the forum and on the MTH Web site for info on the MTH 30-6241 Combo/Diner 2 pack and an add on 30-6240 coach. I believe these are from 1998. I've acquired them used with no boxes and no manuals (my first MTS cars). I'd like to give them a good cleaning and check the interior wiring and bulbs. Before I exert too much pressure and break something (that I'll regret), what's the best way to remove the roof? Does it simply pop off? I'm familiar...

I have some of those car kits, but mine are of heavyweights. They were produced, I think through WWII and later, by a woman who ran a hobby shop in New York City (I talked to a guy at Wheaton once who had met her. I can't now think of her name, but she was widely known) During the war little was made of metal. Supposedly she ran a good shop and was competent in model trains. I used several different brands of kits to build combine coach cabooses, so may have built one from one of them, but...

Like Todd said, the Rail Chief line was produced by MR Equipment Corp. on W. 45th in New York. They made everything from rolling stock to track laying supplies, to structures and even farm animals under that brand. Here are a few ads that appeared during the late forties and early fifties. The first ad is the oldest when they were located on 42nd St, before they moved to their more famous basement location on W 45th. I wouldn't be surprised if the aluminum extrusions were made for them by...

AMT's first streamlined passenger cars were smothsided models. They came out in the late 40s, were sandcast aluminum and weighed a ton; they were available as coaches and observations. They were painted for PRR (tuscan with gold Pullman lettering) and NYC (gray with Pullman lettering). The Deluxe fluted AMT cars appeared in 1950 and initially had smooth roofs, thick one piece extruded aluminum bodies and a separate underframe. A later change involved making the sides separate parts (the roof...

Kaisner ,Midland Reproductions, Clark Benson as well as E P Alexander made aluminum cars. the Alexander cars were an interesting design as they were a roof and upper sides and a floor with lower sides and a metal window stripe that fitted in between. I have a PRR congressional set made of these cars. JC models made aluminum heavy weight cars which were latter made by all nation.

I forgot about Alexander and Midland. They were the other option for scale Budd cars. Both used the separate window idea, but I am told they were different extrusions. OK is still doing extruded cars - Bob Delbridge can tell you more about them. I had no idea Carmen Webster was that attractive.

I have a few "O" gauge Rail Chief products. I have a kit to build a wooden station platform, a kit to make telephone poles, and several different types of cast metal animals. I believe I have cows, horses, pigs and sheep. As I recall the cows come four pieces to a box. Probably the horses too. There are more pieces in the pigs and sheep boxes. I have never owned any of their rolling stock.

Passengers? Complaining? My set didn't come with any passengers, so I don't think we'll be hearing anybody complaining up there in those domes. Subtle floor lighting might have been a real cool effect. Perhaps for V2.0 David

Almost bought the Wabash set at the Allentown show today. Pete Costa had a 6-car set on display in boxes. Catl'g pics do NOT do these cars justice! Very smart-looking appearance for this set. Would have been quite the impulse buy, but then I'd need to find some motive power for it too. One thing always leads to another. So i excercised a little self control. Perhaps another day. David

Personally, I would much prefer lighted domes primarily to spark memories of those magical and beautiful silver Lionel (and Flyer) passenger cars when we were kids. Great memories too! Would seem there have been several excellent suggestions for modifications when you are adding the much-needed passengers. Perhaps drilling the holes and maybe covering them with translucent tape would be the easiest and best? That would add the light from the floor and appear the most prototypical...

Ever notice how hard it is to see outside when in your house at night, with the lights on? Turn the lights off and you can suddenly see outside! Amazing how that works. Now, if we installed a lighting PCB in the vista dome it would have required screws to mount it to the roof of the vista. This would have made it visible from the side PLUS there would be wires running down to the car body (we haven't quite perfected wireless power yet, but its likely on the same container with Fastrack...

Interestingly, the K-Line California Zephyr cars did the iconic Budd dome rather well. Interesting indeed. I had the K-Line NP dome car here for a while, and found the dome undersize and toylike. I use brass parts and make my own domes. And while I too am dazzled by the realism demanded of toy train hobbyists, I am grateful for it, since I can now purchase almost anything i want in 3-rail and convert it to run on more or less realistic track easily. Keep demanding scale models for your...

This statement in Chuck K's post is incorrect It's ironic that Lionel now has all the K-Line assets, but couldn't get the Blue Bird's dome right. Lionel does not have any of the old K-Line tooling.

There had to be some lighting, no one could walk up there and head down the stairs in a rocking, moving train without some lights. Seems all they wanted was a soft glow.

There was lighting up in the dome. What today would be called “task” lighting, for each row in a downward facing position. Probably (hopefully) very dim. What I don’t know is if there was floor or stair lighting. My guess would be yes, but I don’t know for sure. The lighting does not bother me, the shape of the domes, that would bother me more. I should also add, the color is pretty close and the detail is very nice. Once populated with people, the domes will make a nice focal point.

I contacted Lionel's customer service mainly about the incorrect domes and got the sort of reply I expected: "We apologize this is not as expected. We did check and this is how they are manufactured. We are not remaking the roof or shell to correct this difference." The person answering did not even understand the product well enough to realize that the dome is a separate part not requiring a new "roof" or "shell". Interestingly, the K-Line California Zephyr cars did the iconic Budd dome...

That's a big disappointment! I wonder if folks who own the Legacy FM Trainmaster locomotive or F3 ABBA's (I think Lionel did F3's recently, yes?) will fare any better. I only saw the passenger set briefly at the Allentown train show last weekend, and the cars had a very striking appearance to them. I consider myself very, very lucky that the new Texas Special passenger cars match the SD70ACe locomotives that Lionel produced almost 5 years ago. David
