Anyone build Lionel demonstrator layout?

rrman ·
Finished reading the Classic Trains magazine detailing all the Lionel dealer demonstration layouts.  I know that OGR published an article where Jim B. built one using fast track as close replacement for Super O. Granted these layouts were not complex, and designed to run trains in circles and animate alot of accessories for show to draw people into the store. As aside, growing up in Pittsburgh in early '50s, my Christmas high was going to Horne's, Kaufman's, Gimbel's, and...

Re: 0-6-0 Lionel 656

WftTrains ·
No, there was never a Lionel post-war 0-6-0 steam switcher CATALOGED nor was there ever a Lionel post-war or pre-war locomotive numbered 656. The number 656 was used on a pre-war O gauge cattle car made from 1935 though 1940 although Lionel occasionally reused a pre-war number on a completely different post-war item. There was a #403 steam switcher shown in the 1946 catalog but this engine was never made. In the image in the catalog (probably an artist's drawing and not a photograph) it is...

You'll get help, but more than likely its "do it yourself" help. A track powered unit would be somewhat different., but most of the cheaper ones aren't worth the cost of a repair shop, (sentimental attachment aside). Lionel had a part in producing some cheap ones, and really good ones both. #1 Does that run on batteries or powered track? That is question #1 for sure.(no link, unfamiliar loco, & can't really tell) Q.#2- Is this O gauge? Normally G belongs in the HO,N,G,Z section for best...

Thank you all for responding. It turns out I am looking for a #671-186x collector insulation board and it only fits a 1946 Lionel 2020 and 671 engines. The slot for the collector terminal is on one side at the edge on this part, not centered as on the 671-186 that is for the 1947 and newer engine. Send me a message if any body has one for sale. Lionel B&O F-3 ABA

wb47 ·
Here is a really nice ABA set in the darker blue B&O livery. Powered A, dummy B and dummy A. TMCC with odessey. This set runs incredibly smooth as a train (consist) Crawls at slow speed. It does not have all of the speed steps that legacy has but runs as smooth. 6-14566 powered A, 14567, non powered A, and 14558 non powered B, set box is 14565, all boxes are included and in great shape. I bought this set new and my home is smoke free. I never used the smoke. I like the horn on this one.

Lionel starter set from MENARDs

Jeff B. Haertlein ·
A friend of mine received a starter set from Lionel, bought at Menards. It is a PRR 0-8-0 steam engine with a few PRR cars, fast track and a mini transformer. He brought the engine over for me to see, but we could not get the engine to smoke! I did check the switch underneath the engine and it was "on". Is there anything else we should look for, or is it time to return the set, or send the engine in for repairs? Thank you. Jeff

Old Lionel Boxes

Several years ago I took my old trains out of the attic to create a lay out of approximately 12 foot by 9 foot. A lot of the stuff is quite old (going back 50 or more years) and were still in their original Lionel boxes. My understanding is that the value of some of these older items are enhanced if they come in their original box but many of these old boxes are falling apart. I can use scotch tape for box repairs but is there something better? John F

I made a working LED circuit which run from 0-18V AC but before clipping any wire in the loco I would like to know exactly how the lamps are driven in these SD-70 model. I assume they are all powered by the track voltage wich is max 18V AC ? I would also like to know if they operate the same in conventional and TMCC mode. Thanks

0-6-0 Lionel 656

Chessie Steam Fan ·
So recently my father and I purchased a few engines from a lady who's husband died. We bought a Lionel 1656 in about C-7 condition and a locomotive marked as Lionel 656. The 656 is an 0-6-0 switcher locomotive that has an almost identical shell to the 1656. The only shell difference is a fixed bell verses a swinging bell and a screw right behind the bell. Our assumption at the moment is that somebody modified a 1656 to have an 0-6-0 configuration with something like a 2018, 2016, or a 2026...

{SOLD} Lionel PA-1 powered front truck assembly

Jack118711 ·
I ordered this from Trainz (bad idea) under the pretenses of it being a Williams part but I did not look at it closely enough to notice it had ladders on it so I assume it is actually for a Lionel. No brand printed on it but I think Lionel was one of the few to slap ladders on the frame. Anyway, since it does not work for my Williams PA-1 I have no need for it. Looking to get $30 plus shipping. It's in great shape and to scale.

What happened to the original one? I have re-used turbine insulation plates that were cracked or broken in half. I have found that if you are able to put them in place and reattach the collector assembly, they will stay in place. They also work fine with little chips here and there, as long as the chips are not too serious.

How bad is the original that you need to replace it? The only supplier that showed the 671-186X was Dew Associates, and sadly it is "OUT OF STOCK". All the other suppliers I have bookmarked, only list the 1947 style in stock. There is an alternative, if the original isn't badly damaged. You can try to use Card Stock, like poster board, and make one, by tracing the outline of the original. Then use an Xacto knife to cut the slits, and use small drill bit to make the screw holes. I have done...

Re: Repair for Lionel Holiday Christmas Train - O Gauge

Jon G ·
If it is the set pictured, it is G gauge with a IR remote, constant voltage to the track. The electronics fail and are not repairable. I have converted some of these trains to run with a conventional DC HO transformer, but the IR remote can not be used nor will it have any sounds. Any local service station should be to do this conversion if you want to save it.

I had purchased two of the first series of this locomotive (Reading) back in late 2003 or early 2004. They cost $90.00 each. It is actually a saddle tank locomotive with it's water tank wrapped around it's boiler. This little engine is very amazing as one can pull around 20 freight cars. Earlier this year one of them started to run slower and slower until it would only run in reverse. Then smoke started to come out from inside the boiler. I disassembled the locomotive and found that the...

I suspect someone rolled the lamp wires on the lighting board. Here is the link to the LL website showing the board (#6 on the photo) https://www.lionelsupport.com/...d4-b233-766e50ad2664 Getting into the docksider can be interesting...take a few photos with your phone as you pull parts off, so you will know how they all go back together. It's not as bad as the old K-line 0-4-0 Porter for repairs , but can still be a handful.
