Smoke unit issue

Jack118711 ·
Hello! I bought this diesel awhile ago and the smoke unit never worked but the seller refunded me half the cost so I’ve never thought much about it. But now it’s bugging me. It’s an old Lionel TMCC BNSF Dash-9 6-18253 and it’s in great shape minus the smoke unit. I run off a conventional transformer so maybe that’s the issue? My MTH diesels smoke fine but maybe TMCC needs more voltage? I’ve replaced the wicking in the unit and cleaned it up well and even had it sit on the track for awhile...

Lionel TMCC Smoke Unit Troubleshoot- Voltage Regulator ?

Steims ·
Just picked up a "new" Lionel UP GP-30 6-28860. It is not smoking, no fan or heat. I applied 18 VAC directly to the smoke unit J1 connector and the fan spins and the heating element gets hot. I am not getting AC voltage to the J1 connector. I have reset the locomotive. I am seeing about 1 VAC as input to the smoke unit. I suspect it is a problem with the AC Regulator. How can I confirm whether it is bad or it's not getting good serial information from the motherboard to turn on?

functionality of "elephant ears?"

What exactly was the purpose of the elephant ears on steam locomotives and how well did they work? I'm assuming there is some sort of intended aerodynamic effect of the air moving around the forms to create a pressure of vacuum spot. Can anyone explain the functionality and effectiveness? Thanks!

Smoke output and control type

I figured out the pairing the Lionel Legacy 990 to my lionel allegheny 2-6-6-6 locomotive. I have read the instructions on how to increase and decrease the smoke output in the Allegheny instructions, but trying to do it on the lionel legacy 990 is very confusing. I do AUX1, AUX1, 9. But once I push AUX1 the screen changes from the numerical screen to a icon screen. Can anyone help me. Another question, once I got the allegheny locomotive paired with the lionel legacy 990 I went into the info...

Atlas C-630 question

NS6770Fan ·
So everyone, I have an Atlas 3 Rail tmcc C-630 bought in 2011, and recently have discovered a problem that is more or less my fault. The smoke unit board in the unit is severely damaged. The board has a “regulator” as I call it, that from my knowledge detects if there is sufficient smoke fluid in the unit and will shut down the unit if there isn’t enough. That piece of circuitry has been charred and burned so that it is barely even on the board anymore. I know that my wicking is also burned,...

LIONEL - WARRANTY WORK - WORK Completed!! - Train Runs Again

Gettle08 ·
So, back on 4/21 I posted a problem that I had with a Lionel Lionchief Plus engine I bought at the York Train Show. I bought the GP7 from the LCCA. The guy gave me a deal, because my little two year old is building with daddy a UP train layout. When we got home, we were all excited to run our new toy. We ran the engine for 10-20minutes. In that time the smoke unit went out. That is when I made a post asking for help. After a couple calls to Lionel, they said they would fix the engine. So,...

Smoke Unit Clogging And Output

Ricky S ·
Hello, I have been running my MTH trains with DCS, and the smoke usually stops within 1 minute of me putting in the smoke fluid. I blow on the smokestack and a whole lot it pushed out. I think this is bad for the engine because I the smoke is not exiting the engine, it could damage the electronics in the engine. Is there a way to keep the engine's smoke unit from "clogging"? Also, some engines have not been outputting a lot of smoke, and I think it is the wick. Are there any other things I...

Lionel Tmcc LCRU Issue

Sid's Trains ·
I have a Lionel 1995 C&O Yellowbelly Hudson that I have replaced the tmcc LCRU in. Ever since I replaced it the smoke has not worked and the function to turn the head light off doesn't work. I have test the resistor in the smoke unit to see if it works and it does. I have also tested to see if any current is coming out of the smoke pin connector on the LCRU and no power is coming out of it and any of the other pins besides the one the light is connected to. So I have an engine with no...

Operate Lionel's Smoke Fluid Loader through DCS Remote....

Hello Everyone; Has anyone been operating Lionel's Smoke Fluid Loader using MTH's DCS Remote? I finally set mine up on the layout, set it up as an Engine and assigned it ID# 90. I tried pushing several rocker switches and using the thumb wheel, but nothing happens. The loading arm does not move and no noise comes from the pump. The light pole light is lit so I know its getting power. And Run/Prog switch is in the Run position. Hope someone can shed some light.....

Re: MTH Coors Light Silver Bullet, problems with the smoke unit and a reefer car door

The smoke unit on my MTH Coors Light Silver Bullet engine will smoke profusely for less than thirty seconds right after smoke fluid is added and then trail off significantly to almost nothing very quickly. The same thing happens when I add about ten more drops of smoke fluid. Did I add too much smoke fluid or not enough, or is it something else? I noticed that with one of the reefer cars that every so often the door was sliding down about halfway after it fully opened and then it would slide...

New Legacy E6 Atlantic

I just received my Great Northern Legacy E6 Atlantic #1707 6-84947 yesterday. Based on the description from the catalog (2017 Signature V2) it was listed as having whistle steam. I know things change from the catalog and when it went up on Lionel's site that had changed to cylinder steam effect emits smoke from the steam chest. Not too big a deal for me, I prefer the whistle smoke over the steam chest smoke but I was fine with that. I was surprised to see on the box that it had the whistle...

TMCC & Smoke

I purchased a K-line NYC mikado steamer. At first, the unit smoked a lot but has now stopped. I figured the wick and heating element had burned out so I replaced those but still no smoke. I checked the voltage going to the smoke unit but none was detected. The smoke switch is on. I removed the ground wire from the smoke unit and placed 18 volts AC directly on the smoke unit and it began to smoke like a new one. I'm guessing that a circuit board that controls the smoke stopped supplying the...

Atlas 2-rail RS-1: Trains America Studios - Smoke Unit

Hi, this is my first post as a member from over the pond! I have a US O scale DCC layout that I exhibit in the UK. One of my locomotives is an Atlas "Pennsylvania" RS-1 that had a Lionel TMSS system. Re: MTH Hudson only smokes when stopped.

GGG ·
Mike, Actually there are not a lot of MTH smoke problems. Simple design. Does your engine make chuff sounds and have speed control. Do you operate conventional or Command? If the tach reader isn't working the classic symptom is smoke in neutral only. But you would also not have chuff sounds and no speed control. G

I'm using Model Power No. 12 smoke. (only brand available at the local hobby shop). Yes, the engine makes chuff sounds and has speed control. (This is my first engine with sound and I'm very pleased. Proto 3 must really be impressive.) I took the boiler off and opened the smoke unit to check the wick. It was a little charred in one spot, but I rearranged it and as I stated previously, it puts out a strong, steady stream - as long as it's standing still. Thanks for the replies, guys. I'll...

Re: MTH Hudson only smokes when stopped.

Train Doctor ·
Mike, the smoke fan might be loose on the motor shaft, two screws holds the fan motor housing to the smoke unit, take a needle nose pliers and gently pull on the fan. If it comes off easily, that might be your problem. Since PS2 locos stopand start the motor to pulse the smoke to match the chuff, they are under a bit of stress. If you need a fan, I have them. LMK.

Re: MTH Hudson only smokes when stopped.

GGG ·
Yes, I just caught that. Ok, this is conventional and does not have speed control. Speed is controlled by the throttle. The smoke output responds to track voltage. Normally PS-1 engines can run at low voltage settings so the smoke unit doesn't get as much voltage. In neutral are you raising track voltage? I would try changing wick and run it to see if that improves it. Normally a PS-1 can put out good smoke. G

Re: MTH Hudson only smokes when stopped.

mikeadams2k ·
Thanks guy. I'm new to all this and when asked about 'speed control', I assumed this was referring to the engine. But, now I understand it referred to the smoke unit. I have the original Proto Sound, so it does not have speed control. I'll try changing the wick. From reading other posts and forums, it seems like s Tiki torch wick works well as a replacement.

Re: MTH Hudson only smokes when stopped.

gunrunnerjohn ·
The original ProtoSound 1 didn't have puffing smoke, it just puts out smoke all the time. Also, the smoke unit is powered from the track voltage, so there should be no change when the locomotive is moving. I'd look for wiring issues between the smoke unit and the track feeds. Do you ever see any hint of smoke as the locomotive runs?

Re: MTH Hudson only smokes when stopped.

mikeadams2k ·
If the engine is stopped, after a few seconds, it puts out a steady vertical stream of smoke. The would indicate, to me, that the fan is working. At least, while the engine is stopped. Once the engine starts moving, the smoke dies out. Maybe a wiring connection that opens when the engine moves, but closes when stopped? I'll try this route.

Re: MTH Hudson only smokes when stopped.

gunrunnerjohn ·
I'd track down the wiring, something is certainly amiss there. You could open the unit and make sure the impeller is on tightly. I would think it would have to be very loose to rattle around enough to stop when the train moves, but who knows. My guess would be this isn't in the smoke unit itself.

If it's something visible, I feel I can fix it. Replacing a circuit board or something along that line..., I'm not to sure. Hopefully, this is only my FIRST engine. I can always relegate it to static display duty.(eventually) Thanks for the advice.

Re: MTH Hudson only smokes when stopped.

stan2004 ·
If you turn down the audio volume you should be able to hear the constant whirring sound of the smoke fan motor. Does the whirring stop when the engine starts moving? This would at least tell you if power is getting to the smoke unit when the engine is moving. Did you get to GGG's question about if/how track voltage affects smoke? That is, for the SAME track voltage in neutral or in motion, is the smoke behavior the same? You might try two track voltages in both neutral and in motion, a low...

Re: MTH Hudson only smokes when stopped.

I can't imagine this is a circuit failure, unless it's something really odd on the smoke unit's little circuit board. In any case, if it's the smoke unit itself, I can't think of anything on there that wouldn't be pretty easily repaired.

Re: MTH Hudson only smokes when stopped.

Here's the Parts Breakdown for that set, as I mentioned, the smoke unit is connected directly to the track power. So, the only logical failure items are the wiring to the smoke unit or the actual smoke unit.

Thanks. I'll try to see if I can hear the fan and try running at high and low voltages. Thanks. I'd managed to find the owner's manual and parts list on MTH's site. I'll do some more testing and I'll let you know if I'm able to come up with anything. Thank you so much for all your suggestions.

All is well now. My engine is now smoking while underway. I changed the wick (using the tiki torch wick) and this made the difference. Also, I found that it smokes more while pulling the 5 passenger cars since it requires more power to pull them. Thanks again for taking the time to help a newbie out. (an old newbie that is.)

Interesting. I guess that underway the track voltage dropped enough not to get much smoke. All's well that ends well, and now you'll be less reluctant to pop the top to fix stuff.

"We rip to ship" is a phrase I became familiar with on ebay many years ago. It's not confined to that site of course. Too many businesses take shipping as an opportunity to pad out just a little more profit. "Handling," you know. Many others refuse to use anything other than a courier as it's just more convenient for them and hang the additional expense to the customer! On inexpensive items, it's frequently a "deal-breaker."
