Legacy operation on MTH DCS platform

Biglou ·
I have an MTH train layout. My plan is to purchase a Lionel Legacy 990 controller and a Legacy Vision Line engine, so I will not be operating Lionel stuff through MTH DCS. My layout is set up with a 500 MTH brick connected to the AUX power input of an MTH TIU (REV L) and then hooked up to 3 separate MTH 750 bricks connected to 3 separate input channels. All 3 channels are now fixed voltage channels and all three channels are hooked up to three separate track loops from the output channels of...

K-Line Santa-Fe "Silver Chief" - Was There A Real Santa-Fe "Silver Chief"?

SilverChief ·
I'll be setting up for the first time a K-Line Santa-Fe "Silver Chief" set for Christmas. A set I purchased years ago on clearance. I've since added the extra 2-pac passengers car set and enough track for a double eight layout. Was there ever a real Silver Chief run by Santa-Fe? The K-Line cars are distinctive with a gold stripe that runs from the locomotives into the passenger cars. Was that color scheme ever used on an active train? Was this a quality set? Does it have any collectible...

Vision Line Niagara Variable Ashpan Glow?

David Ogletree ·
Hi Guys, I just got and opened my VL Niagara and was really surprised to confirm that it does not have the variable ashpan glow. It's hard to imagine that a super-high-end Legacy steamer with all of the goodies this one has doesn't have that feature. Anyone else disappointed in that? I don't know if it's possible to add it. Might be nice if it could be.

Under The Hood: Lighting a Lionel 8604 "Wabash Cannonball"

M. Mitchell Marmel ·
Got a CARE package from one of our Forum members yesterday. I'd been expecting a K-line switcher with issues, but got a nice bonus in addition: One of the items was a "Wabash Cannonball" loco. I fired it up on the bench, and it ran and smoked, but the headlight wasn't working. I shrugged, said to myself, "OK, needs a new bulb" and popped it open. Huh. No bulb. Well, this is why I keep wired 12V grain of wheat bulbs in my parts bin. A bit of trimming on the lens, and let there be light! While...

TMCC & Smoke

Blake Morris ·
I purchased a K-line NYC mikado steamer. At first, the unit smoked a lot but has now stopped. I figured the wick and heating element had burned out so I replaced those but still no smoke. I checked the voltage going to the smoke unit but none was detected. The smoke switch is on. I removed the ground wire from the smoke unit and placed 18 volts AC directly on the smoke unit and it began to smoke like a new one. I'm guessing that a circuit board that controls the smoke stopped supplying the...

K-Line Hudson Upgrades

TheTrainMain ·
Hiya! I was considering purchasing a K-line New York Central Hudson (K3270-5343S) and I was wondering a few things... 1. Can I install ERR cruise in it? 2. Is there a way to replace the Railsounds board with one from another later TMCC locomotive (New York Central 2-8-2 Mikado JR, w/TMCC (6-38609). I just really think that the sounds from this locomotive would compliment the hudson beautifully. 3. How would one install a super chuffer, so that I can have 4 chuffs per revolution, and fan...

K-Line MP15 diesel Rust Issues

NS 3322 ·
I purchased this K-Line MP15 Union Pacific diesel locomotive from a now closed hobby store several years ago, and it began to develop a rust issue around the interior electronics and pick up rollers. The locomotive would not run correctly due to this issue. I separated the locomotive from the rest of my collection (so the rust would not spread) and placed it in a box, and forgot about it. After completing several other projects I have decided to attempt to fix this unit. Any suggestions on...

Re: Milk Cars

PSU1980 ·
K-Line produced items for a long time. Unfortunately, their was a law suit between Lionel and K-Line which resulted in K-Line shutting down and Lionel eventually took them over (not sure exactly when that happened). Dealers that had original KLine stock were allowed to sell it off, (I got my K-Line TMCC PRR K4 that way) all their inventory. Much it went. If you Google the items you want, If I recall a website will pop up with a catalog list that you can thumb through. Not much help, that is...

The doors were offset, unprototypically, on these? They should have made them as double door Hanrahan cars with the one door permanently closed and the far door operating....would have looked a lot better. I'd be looking for THAT, if it was lettered for Colorado Midland.

Eric, The NH coil car is brand new in the original box. The PRR coil car is used in the original box. I'm going to rate the PRR as excellent because something is on the coil cover. It almost looks like the paint ran, but it might be glue that was dripped on the car. I would take less for it because of this if you're interested. Thanks, Brad

Thanks Don. Great comparison photos. The K-Line model seems to have a bit more detail than the Williams and Lionel versions. I have been looking at some on Ebay and notice the third rail shoes are molded into the truck sides on the K-line model. It also has the small pantograph detail on the roof. I never understood what this little pantograph was for. One thing I did notice is the main pantographs is the contact shoe. It looks wimpy next to the Williams and Lionel pantograph shoes. I plan...

Dan P., The K-line engine is really a beautiful model and often it is very reasonably priced. The truck mounted shoes do interfere with some track work and close clearance bridges. I ran mine on a friends layout and it did not clear an MTH truss bridge that I have never had any problems with. The small Pantagraphs were for running in GCT the track was so complex that the third raid is eliminated in some areas. If you look at the NYC S motors they had them too. I have never run with cantary...

If I remember right, those third rail shoes you mentioned on the K-Line version didn't play nice with Ross switches. They would hit something on the switch (the switch machine perhaps?) and either cause a derailment or stop the train or something. Hopefully someone will chime in and refresh my memory. J White

The shoe hits the screw on a dz machine. I remove the screw countersink it slightly and put in a flat head screw. Unfortunately, my k-line unit has zinc rot.

I thought the Zinc Rot was a thing of the past. I read somewhere that die cast metal had improved some time in the fifties or sixties.
