Alco PA #59L restoration project

rslaser ·
I'm sure many of you on this forum are aware of the ongoing restoration of former Santa Fe Alco PA #59L at the Museum of the American Railroad. Currently the museum is trying to acquire a MLW HR412 from the Arkansas & Missouri RR. Just wanted to share this because the project is in a critical phase, as they are pretty much down to the wire in the collecting of funds needed to get this donor locomotive. Here are a couple of links, hopefully, where you can go to read more about it. Thanks...

Any 3-rail 0 or 0-27 clubs in or near the Philly/Delaware Valley, PA area with operating layouts? There are quite a few model railroading clubs in the area with HO or N scale layouts but what about 0?

Good Train Day in Lansdale, PA

Moonman ·
The grandchildren, the wife and I made the trip to Lansdale. We visited the Holiday Display with a lot of nice trees including "Trains in the Tree", the North Penn O Gaugers modular layout and Henning's Trains. Met the Hennings, picked up some goodies in the store. Then had a bite to eat and gave Santa our list. Good folks all around. The grandchildren had fun. We also discovered another treat. Our granddaughter wanted a magic wand for some time. It just happens that there is a magic shop on...

From what I can see in the video, the layout is quite impressive. I would like to see more of it. Are you open to visitors at any other time of year ?

We have at least one open house per month, usually 12-5 on a Sunday, and every Sunday between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Next one will be either 2/14 or 2/21, I'll know for sure by this weekend. I try to post reminders on the Facebook page but I don't always remember. I've posted a few recent pictures on the Facebook page, too.

Brian, you did some interesting work on the Lionel Reading T-1. Are MTH Reading T-1's detailed any better? I might be up to Reading or Hamburg PA in the spring or early summer, so I might stop by Frackville mall. Lee Fritz

There is literally no comparison between the 1-18006 Lionel T-1 and the MTH T-1. In fact I have 3 Lionel T-1s sitting in boxes that I had planned to upgrade and detail but it's simply not worth the tremendous effort.

Can you be more specific about that please? Does the MTH T-1 have more detail then Lionel T-1? I know the MTH T-1 is quite heavy and runs great, has some very nice detail in my opinion. Even has chains on the tender. The only problem I have had is with track clearances at times or hitting some scenery because of the cab & tender overhang. Lee Fritz

The details on the MTH T-1 are significantly better. The Lionel model has very little detail. The size is right, but the details are very toy-like in comparison.

The club is sponsored by Henning's Trains in Landsdale, and right now a lot of the building is going on at Harry Henning's house in Sellersville. The information on the club can be found at North Penn O Gaugers , and there is a module specification there as well.

There used to be one in the Bethlaham/Allentown area; I think it was 3rail [they also had HO on another floor]. Maybe someone in the area can fill in the info.

Gunrunner john We have been running trains on the new O gauge layout for two years. We took down the old layout after our 2009/2010 open house. We had the new table work up and track down plus Legacy and DCS working in time for the 2010/2011 open house. We did some scenery, added operating accessories and buildings in time for the 2011/2012 open house. Now we are painting scenery, planting grass, bushes etc. We hope to start balasting soon in time for the 2012/2013 open house. Right now not...

Please Visit North Schuylkill High Railers Hi Rail Layout Frackville-PA

Please visit my friends at the North Schuylkill High Railers Model Train layout in the Schuylkill Mall. Located in Frackville, PA at the intersection of State Rt 61 and Interstate 81. It's a very large "O" scale layout 24'x55' 3 levels tall. We run mostly MTH DCS engines, up to 12 trains running at once. There is also an Old School Lionel Tinplate layout, like the kind your Dad may have put up at Christmas time. We even have trolleys and an old time Anthracite Colliery that dumps coal...

That is a standard part they have been using for years. You could plug the early sound system they used into it. Great wiring available to use with any current sound system.

The plug was for the first True sounds sound system. It was the Ott sound boards with the male molex plug that plugged into the wire harness. The sound was always EMD f unit with a single chime horn and a dialog that stated: 1648 departing.... 1648 clear on track two. The diesel roar at the time was unique because it reved with the increase or decrease of power to the track. I am sure someone has it on YouTube. They are simple robust sound units. I bet finding the molex male plug you could...

I have that sound system in a early A-B-A Southern set of F units I have by Williams actually to me a lot better than what they went to after that. Not sure what Bachmann new system is as have not heard it but I did not like the preset crossing I would of rather just had a regular horn/whistle with bell like the rest did at first. I like to blow my horn/whistle how I want not a preset.

I did not see it the last time I drove by on that east bound one-way street, if you are talking about the one that was down in the basement. And I think it has been a couple (few?) years since I have stopped at that one. I found nothing of interest in several stops, and as some of the antique malls on 30 west have disappeared, I don't go over there every trip. I guess the tinplate shop in the office equipt. shop south of the new post office in Gettysburg has disappeared, too? Did I read that...
