Lionel Legacy Engine Set-up Help

Karl Anderson 022117 ·
I’m quite new to the hobby and have been slowly putting my 3 rail layout together for the last 10 months. This past week I was finally able to power it up and start running some trains, which was the best feeling after months of research and time spent learning how to get my layout to come to life. I’m running both MTH DCS and Lionel Legacy and things were going great as I had successfully added both an MTH & Lionel Legacy engine; however, when I went to add an additional Lionel Legacy...

Engine does not work

lehighline ·
This is an MTH Railking Mohawk, 30-1166-1. I put a BCR in it a while ago. The headlight kept burning out, so I replaced it with an led. Otherwise the engine is stock. I went to run it recently and found out it would not work. It does not add to the remote, and if I take the TIU out of the mix, it won’t run in conventional. I’m using a 3ft section of Gargraves as a test track. I was able to add a “known good” engine to the remote, so I know the test system works. Suggestions please! Chris LVHR

MTH Railking Proto Sound 3 Santa Fe 4-6-0 Drawbar Disconnecting

Ricky S ·
Hello, I have a MTH Railking Proto Sound 3 Santa Fe 4-6-0 steam engine. When I run this engine, sometimes the wireless drawbar connecting the locomotive to the tender disconnects. When it does, the engine jerks, the sounds go out, and lights and smoke go on and off uncontrollably. I turn off the power and re attach it and it is good for another few minutes. Does anyone know if there is a way to make the drawbar connect more stable so it does not disconnect? If not, that's ok. Have a good...

2 Lionchief Engines together - same consist?

Gettle08 ·
Ok, this might be a dumb question, but I am very new to this hobby. I have two RS-3 Lionel Lionchief engines. Can I run these two engines hooked together, in the same consist? If they are both placed at the same speed on the remote. I know you can run two on the same track, just thought it would be neat to have them together, and make things more realistic. Thank you for anyones help.

firebox glow feature inop

EJC ·
I just got my Pennsylvania ps3 0-6-0 switcher back from repair from MTH. They put a new board in the tender. On the DCS remote for the engine there is a fire box glow button to turn the firebox glow on and off. It doesn't work. The light is always off. I took the boiler off and noticed that there is an LED there for fire box glow and it is hooked up. I swapped the interior light LED with the firebox LED. The Firebox LED now worked, so I know the LED is not bad. Before I sent the dead engine...

Improving traction on grades for selected engines

Saul Klibanow 020117 ·
I have a steep grade that ends in a 72" curve on one section of my layout. Some of my motive power navigates the grade well but two engines stall when pulling any reasonably sized train. The two engines are both MTH premiers and one is a 2-8-2 and the other a 4-6-2. It seems to me that if a little extra weight were added, particularly over the drivers that this might solve it. Has anyone else had this problem and what might be the best way to add weight. Comments and ideas are welcomed. Thanks

Lionel Pennsylvania 2-10-4 "Texas" Steam Engine #6-28078

I am hoping someone can help me with a question I have about this older Lionel locomotive. When I acquired it (used), there were no traction tires. The manual states that "four of the drive wheels are fitted with rubber traction tires..." This is a used Williams engine I bought on eBay a couple weeks ago. It's a powered unit; no box, owner's manual, or other info available with it. It appears all original (except for the missing ornamental horn on the top). The shell looks like a Williams Dash-9 unit to me, but the UP road number shown in Williams' catalogs is 9449 . I can't find any evidence of a #9450 unit anywhere in the catalogs I have, or on the internet. Anyone have any info or thoughts about this engine? Thanks!

I have since sold this engine and therefore have no reason to keep these catalogs. Originally bought the engine from Just Trains in Newark, Delaware. Great people to work with. Un-Folds three pages to 33". My intent was to frame the one with the perfect cover and then the inside of the other. Together, this would be a nice addition to a train room, especially if you have this engine. I might add that the one I had ran like a dream. Visibility of Engineers

Dan Padova ·
So I'm sure this has been discussed sometime in the past. It seems to me that the visibility of the track ahead, by the engineer, could be modest at best when driving, piloting, operating, whatever the correct term may be, steam locomotives and some electrics, like our beloved GG1. Cab signals played an important role, I'm sure. But the view of what's ahead could not have been ideal, especially in the case of large steam locomotives. Anyone have any thoughts ?

Smoke Unit Clogging And Output

Craignor ·
I put crew figures in my Williams scale GG-1s, in fact I put them in all my Williams scale locos, its easy. (I also added a LED headlight to them all as well, thats easy too.) I buy MTH's engineer figures, they come with lttle seats. Open up the loco by uncrewing the screws underneath the loco. I cut a small piece of 3M double sided tape, and use it to secure the engineers side/chairs side to the inside shell of the loco, screw it back togethet, and thats it.

Re: Can you add engineer figures to Williams scale GG-1 cab interiors?

Do you have part numbers for the MTH crew figures? I like the idea of the seats, I have some locomotives I'd like to "upgrade". I usually end up using standard figures and making the platform or seat, this would be easier.

Are there 2 engineers in each loco - one on the right side at each end when the GG-1 is facing forward, or one on the left side at each end when the GG-1 is facing forward, or an engineer seated on both sides but at only one end of the GG-1? If you look closely at the locomotive, one end of the shell (down low just above the frame, about 1 1/2" in from the nose) will have a small "F" on it, indicating it's the front. GG-1's would run in both directions with just the crew swapping sides. The "F" was to help the maintenance crews with reporting of problems. The engine would have been operated with a fireman on the opposite side to help with visibility issues, you can't see the other side. Fireman would help out in clearing signals...
