I moved this to the want to buy category since that is where it belonged...also all discussion was either deleted or edited since this is not a discussion forum..... If you would like to post what you are doing in your workbench/layout area, then please start a separate thread....thanks!

Re: Atlas is not making switches or much anything for Industrial line.

Ace ·
Wasn't the "Industrial" track selection very limited, and Atlas has since expanded their line of "Atlas O" track to include O27 curves and O36 switches etc? I would suppose that Atlas has chosen to focus more on the upscale O-gauge market, and not have two different track systems.

They don't need to be new just in good useable condition.  I usually pay by PayPal friends/family.  I have bought some on OGR but cant seem to come up with enough track. Thank you for checking. Donna

Good 3-Rail Atlas Dealers??

Jack Swan5010 ·
As many folks in the hobby know, the price of Lionel trains too high for some (including me) to afford. I have decided to start to pick up some Atlas O products, as they seem to get a good wrap. Can anyone give please give me a good online dealer for 3-rail Atlas O products? I was hoping to pre-order their new NS Sd40-2s.

If you are working a temporary layout, then YES you have a problem. If you are building a permanent layout, buy regular Atlas O and add roadbed from the many suppliers out there.

To me, it seems all of the major O importers have lost focus. We hear Atlas here. WBB is a shell of when it was under Jerry. MTH has cut back on RTR sets. Only Lionel has kept up with some sort of low end product.

Atlas-O trucks are mounted differently. Call Bill Serrelli at Atlas to find out how to access trucks from inside after removing shell. You may also ask about removing the shell. I found that it is easier to remove shell if you remove all the side frames to get better access to body mount screws.

Most people that have worked with Atlas"O" turnouts power all three rails at all three entrances to the turnout to alleviate the issues you're seeing. Early production had undersized wiring between the gaps in the rails; even later production has what I consider under-sized wiring considering we have the capability of supplying 15 amps of current on our rails.... Short answer, your problems can be fixed, but you'll likely need to I install some jumpers along the way.

Re: Atlas Couplers

Keystoned Ed ·
Alan Starting with the 1970's era O gauge product line (made in Austria by Roco) over the years Atlas revised the design of their O scale coupler at least 5 times. The one common denominator was a coupler box with snap on lid and hidden mounting screws that do not match Kadee's spacing or setback from the end sill. The latest AtlasO design has a Kadee 805 clone head with an external spring. As you've discovered they still have issues but as others have pointed out the cane operate better if...

Atlas has had 027 curves and 036 switches in the line up for years, the 036 switches may have been hard to find in the last couple of years, I don't know. I have had some Atlas O 036 switches and a factory box of 027 curves for several years, I wish that Atlas would produce some 027 switches to go with the curves that I have. I want to build a couple of "Coffee Table" layouts on hollow core doors, and need the 027 switches that Atlas hasn't made yet(or even said they would ever make). IIRC,...

I spent a lot of time debating the very same thing and finally decided on Scale Trax, because of its low profile and nearly invisible center rail. When it is laid and ballasted, nothing looks better (IMHO). Take a look at pictures of ballasted rail system and you will most likely agree. That being said, there are many time when I wish I hadn't gone with Scale Trax. Right now I am working on a Christmas layout for this year and want to use my Scale Trax. The Rollers on your engines will probably be better off with Atlas track. I come across lots of postwar items that were run on "Super-O" track, which has a center rail very similar to the scaletrax one, and they dont look good... You'll also probably be able to find Atlas O easier than scaletrax, its more popular than scaletrax and more dealers carry it, and the used market will be more populated with Atlas O. Atlas O would be the safer choice in my humble opinion. Either way, I'm eager to...

Re: Atlas O Track vs MTH Scaletrax

Ken-Oscale ·
Both are good track systems which can produce beautiful results. Look online and on YouTube for examples. I have used Atlas-O, and have some Scaletrax not used. I agree that historically, Atlas-O has had better availability, but that that is not a prediction about future availability. Check some online vendors for their stock and price just to see. Scaletrax has thinner better looking rails (and thinner center rail) than Atlas-O. Atlas-O has accurate tie spacing and size. To my eye, the...

Re: Atlas 21st Century track 27" radius

Len2 ·
Keep in mind O27 diameter tubular track is measured from the outside edge of a tie to the outside edge of the opposite tie. Atlas-O 21C curves are measured center rail to opposite center rail. This means Atlas-O O27 curves are actually O28-1/4 using the old measuring method. Which is why a fair amount of equipment that says "Minimum O31 curves" will go around Atlas-O O27 curves just fine, but not tubular O27 curves.

Atlas O Switch Failures

heiliner ·
I have just had an Atlas O 054 left-hand switch fail. It's not the electro magnet (switch machine) but the underside embedded wiring that transfers power on down the track. They seem to fatigue over time and break. The worst part it is in a blocked switching yard area meaning a lot of track has to be lifted. Has anyone had much luck powering the dead track with another set of power shoes and leaving the broken Atlas O switch in place? OR do I just bite the bullet and find another Atlas O 054...
