MTH 20-20265-1 F7 ABA & Car Premier Question

PSU1980 ·
Forum Members. I am considering buying my first passenger car set and I think I have landed on the MTH 20-20265-1 NYC ABA unit. Really like the way it looks. Does anyone know what the number of the matching MTH passenger car set might be? I would like to get the full 7 car set so I would appreciate both numbers. I no longer have the catalogs but do know that the engines came out in 2013. Thank you in advance for the help.

Lionel 21" Passenger Cars "Southern"

I bought the Lionel 21" Stations sounds Dinning car "Southern" and was looking to buy the other 21" passenger cars-specifically the Observation Car and the Coach Car but have not found them anywhere - wonder if the "Southern" is not that popular in rest of the country but thought that here in North Carolina I would be able to find them. I have sent emails to some of the advertisers on this site with no luck - just looking for ideas - not in a rush to get them but would like to get by years end.

Ringling Bro. circus train cars repurposed?

rrman ·
Watched a Youtube of a Ringling circus train that detoured through Iowa years ago. Now that the circus is defunct, I imagine those passenger cars will be for sale. However the original car has, no doubt, been heavily modified into sleeping, living room, kitchenette etc areas, so the cost of car plus converting them back into sleepers or coach units would be as much as fresh build. I would assume there would be a car serial number so its pedigree could be traced back to first owner and what...

Yet Another Amtrak Retirement

GenesisFan99 ·
Today is a very sad day for all of the fans of the Coast Starlight. Today marks the final northbound run from Los Angeles to Seattle with Amtrak's ex-Santa Fe Hi-Level Lounges. All 5 remaining cars in service will likely be retired upon arrival from Seattle. The final Southbound run and final run ever departs Seattle on February 4th. I'm not sure what will happen to them, all we can hope is none meet the scrapper's torch or sit to rot in a yard. Supposedly, there are to be 2 Parlour Cars on...

Lionel AEC Reactor Fluid Car numbering question

Dave Sheahen ·
I dismantled my layout last year to refinish the basement and have taken the opportunity to find new homes for several items in my collection. I started to prep my set of 4 AEC Reactor Fluid Cars for sale and I noticed that the blue, purple and green cars have different car numbers stenciled on them than printed on the box label. For example, for Lionel 6-16153, the Blue fluid car, the label reads 6315-1, but the car itself is lettered with number 6515-1. Can anyone tell if this is a “known”...

Plastic vs Aluminum Passenger Cars

Will Ebbert ·
Curious how others feel about this. I actually really prefer plastic passenger cars to aluminum. I have plastic and aluminum cars from Lionel, Golden Gate Depot, and K-Line plus plastic cars from Atlas and MTH and in all cases think the detail and overall look of the plastic cars is better. To me the detail is a lot crisper and the contours look more accurate. The cost is also a nice benefit of plastic cars.

Re: "Stringing" of an unsuccessful 100 car train

AGHRMatt ·
That got me a few years back with 45 cars. The only solutions for a complex layout are very heavy, short cars up front (more flanges per foot) with lighter, longer cars on the rear or multiple locomotives in consist with a pusher or two on the back.

I had a problem with stringlining on only a 24 element train - my War Train I posted a video of some time back. I wanted to run the scratch/bashed built, 36-wheel, 25 inch long railway cannon car near the end of the train -- it weighed a lot and it caused a alot of stringlining initially and a lot of work for me - I had to add weight to various cars in between until they weighed so much that, while the train did no stringline anymore, it was a challenge to get moving. I learned quite a lot,...

Re: "Stringing" of an unsuccessful 100 car train

Southwest Hiawatha ·
A retired railroader once told me that the big, heavy multi-wheel flatcars are always run at the front of the train. If I remember right, the rule on the SP was: 2 regular cars to separate them from the drawbar, no more than 5 of the super-flats, then the rest of the train. I would think a big cannon car would merit its own train, like a Schnabel car. Another way to minimize stringlining might be to put a helper in the middle of the train. Of course if you do that, you have to be sure it's...

Thanks to everyone for your comments and great input. The new factor that none at BMHR club had consider/discussed is "flanges per inch" on the forward cars...it makes sense...will try to incorporate in our future efforts. To provide a timing context, we ran the nearly successful but stringlining train on 4/3/12. We then spent some time pondering improvements/fixes, the major one being to put the heavier cars forward and the lighter cars rearward. Then on 4/26/12, we assembled and ran the...
