70's Atlas Rail Cars / kits

RandyR ·
I hope I'm in the right spot. I'm still kind of new to this forum. In the last couple months there have been a boatload of 70's era Atlas O scale RTR and Kit cars hit eBay. I'm also somewhat of a newbie at model railroading and my knowledge base is a little shallow. From what I can gather, the aforementioned RTR's and kits seem to represent 40' single door boxcars and plug-door steel reefers from about the 50's era but I'm not convinced they're prototypical. Is there anyone out there that...

3rd Rail Passenger Car Couplers

Rev Richie ·
I want to replace the couplers on my 3rd Rail Lehigh Valley John Wilkes Coaches.  The OEM couplers do not open while in motion but they don't keep the cars together either.  I haven't been able to figure out why the geometry of the couplers allow them to slip apart. Can anyone suggest a coupler that will work well on 3rd Rail coaches? Thanks Rev Richie

Anyone know any information on These Passenger Cars?

Hey Guys, I picked these up recently, and wanted to know if anyone could tell me more about these Passenger cars. The Boxes say:Rail Chief Products Co.NY,NY. Their Boxes also indicate this company sold telephone poles,Water Towers,Platforms and Signal Towers also. These kits just seemed to be different,so I picked them up. The bottoms of the cars are made out of an old masonite board type material.  There is no provision on the truck for lighting, although I think I will put some LED's...

Do you have a specific Norfolk Southern Auto Rack on TTGX flat car that you would like LIONEL to produce?

The people at Lionel have not yet produced their O Scale Auto Rack on 89' flat car in a Norfolk Southern and Trailer Train/TTX scheme. Do you have a specific Norfolk Southern Auto Rack on TTGX flat car that you would like LIONEL to produce? This is my choice. I chose the earliest version, so I can use it with the diesels and freight cars that were around in the 1980's and 1990's. Andrew

gang car issue

dfk70 ·
I recently acquired a #50 gang car in a box of random cars and I can't seem to get it running correctly.  I've taken it apart and cleaned/lubricated everything and I installed the missing armature bearing.  The gears look good and it rolls well without the armature in it.  There doesn't appear to be excessive play in the wheels but I don't know what would be considered excessive. It runs well if I connect wires directly to the pickup/frame but if I put it on the track, it...

Help with MTH 0-27 Passenger Cars

barnun ·
Ok folks, I give up. I've tried several searches on the forum and on the MTH Web site for info on the MTH 30-6241 Combo/Diner 2 pack and an add on 30-6240 coach. I believe these are from 1998. I've acquired them used with no boxes and no manuals (my first MTS cars). I'd like to give them a good cleaning and check the interior wiring and bulbs. Before I exert too much pressure and break something (that I'll regret), what's the best way to remove the roof? Does it simply pop off? I'm familiar...

HOW I DID IT...Enhancements to the Lionel N5b cabin car (caboose)

I wanted an N5 Crew Express Cabin Car to bring up the rear of my Mail Train. Nobody makes one for the era I am modeling (1955-1956), so I decided to modify a Lionel N5b. This is what I started with: And this is what I ended up with: I used a lot of references for this project: In addition to the Keystone article, I used several online photos of the non express cabin cars. The two that helped me the most are these: Finding period correct photos is a challenge. First of all, no one...

Re: gang car issue

JTrains ·
So, I ended up solving my own problem. I shot some DeoxIT into the collector, gave it a couple of minutes, and then took it for a spin - problem solved, at least for now. My next though was going to be to apply some Bachmann EZ-Lube conductive lube to the collector - but it doesn't seem to be necessary. We'll see in the coming days. As a side note: the Bachmann lube freezes when exposed to the cold we're seeing here in the midwest. Not get sluggish - but actually forms a crystalline...

Re: gang car issue

JT, Glad you found a solution. But there's something I'm not understanding. You said that it ran in your hand, but when you put in on the track the transformer shut down like there was a short on the track. I assumed you meant the breaker tripped. Or did it? It's starting to sound like the car just stopped (due to lack of continuity from the roller and not a short). Roger

Since this is a thread about #50s...one thing I’ve noticed on one I recently bought off Da Bay is the center rail collector on it gets hot – like really hot – after running for a few minutes. I’ve already replaced the roller on it (it was worn to the point of having a groove in it) and cleaned the connecting pin which seemed in good shape. Nothing else I run ever ends up with a hot pickup – but then again there’s nothing else I run with a single pickup pulling as much current as it does. Is...

PRR Man ·
John, for the horizontal bar guards on the end platforms, that bolt to the collision posts, is that solid rod or hollow tube? During my N5e bash, I modeled those bars with rod and flattened the ends with a very fine finish nail set that had a dome-shaped inset head. I used brass rod and the nail set rendered a very nice example of a flattened end with bolt head. Now I'm thinking hollow tube of the same diameter may work better. and oh yes, powerful optics are definitely necessary!
