MTH SW1500 riding up on Lionel switches

pittsburghrailfan ·
The local club I belong to recently added another extension to its O gauge layout. Because of material constraints, we were forced to use old Lionel tinplate/tubular O-72 switches to create sidings and spurs. When I attempted to run our 30- 2749-1 SW1500 across these switches lined in the straight direction, the locomotive's truck appears to ride up on the frog; it gets stuck about when the front truck crosses the frog. Are there any solutions to this issue? If videos or pictures are needed,...

The Charles Chips company was started in 1942 when Effie Musser sold her potato chips through a distributor, who put them in distinctive tins, and named them Charles Chips after Charles Street in Baltimore. Effie and her husband, moved production to a professional kitchen in 1946; and offered home delivery of their chips. The Scardino family bought the brand in 2011, and brought back the original recipes and tins. They now sell chips, pretzels, and cookies from their website and other...

Lionel 11140 3 Truck Shay vibration noise (in reverse)

Mike Summerville ·
Hi All, I have a friend's Lionel 11140 3 truck shay that he asked me to look at because when going in reverse it sounds like the top of the cylinders are "rubbing". To the best of my knowledge, there are no actual pistons so I can't figure out what might be making this noise when running in reverse....?? Anyone see a similar issue and have a cure?? Thanks as always, Mike

Switching back to high rail trucks for 70 ft. passenger car (Premier)

AbuelO_gauge ·
Recently I found 4 MTH premier 70' UP passenger cars at a good price (20-6638, 20-6738, 20-68036) so I could finally have some passenger cars behind my E6 ABA diesel locomotives. But I was missing a rear observation car. Then I saw this Russian Hill observation car on eBay. Originally, it had been part of a 5 car set sold as 20-6556, Catalog AX 2000, Vol 3, Premier but that set was now obviously broken up. When it arrived I saw that it had been converted to scale trucks and Kadee couplers (2...

MTH Engine truck grounding problem

Gary Liebisch ·
I have a 30-2469-1 F3 ABA diesel. All of a sudden I am seeing a problem with the grounding of the truck to the rest of the chassis/body. What I am seeing is sparking between the truck pivot point (which is also the motor bracket) and the chassis/body. Since this started , I am trying to find perhaps a wire that is supposed to do the job of keeping these two parts electrically grounded together, but I am not finding such a wire. It appears that only the mechanical touching and friction...

It sound to me like you are mixing up Central Locomotive Works (CLW) with Locomotive Workshop (LW). To my knowledge LW never produced a kit for an SD loco. CLW did and all CLWdiesle trucks were assembled from lost wax brass castings. LW did use soft metal castings for truck sideframes on the diesels that they did produce. There is a huge difference in quality between CLW and LW products. CLW produced first rate kits that finish into beautiful models. Joe

All the CLW (Central Locomotive Workshop) kits I have seen since way back in the 80s, had cast brass trucks. Also, All the ones I am familiar with built-up had cast brass. Now obviously this is a narrow perspective, but I think indicative based on train shows and visiting layouts. I don't have any CLW diesels, but I have 2 CLW steamers (2-8-0) including one very old model, and all detail parts are brass. The tenders do have wood floors but all visible parts are brass. The newer model for...

There is no confision here... Locomotive Workshop (Jan Lorenzen) indeed did make a SD35/40/SDP40/45 kit because I have one and have the printed assembly instructions that clearly state they are from Locomotive Workshop. Enclosed is a pic of the original CLW SD40-2 product announcement, but I still do not have the OEM OEM assembly instructions... How did I find this arcane info? I used a Google search to find the info with keywords CLW AND emd AND sd40-2 and "giants of the west" on a Japanese website forum post in 2007. http://dda40x.blog.jp/archives/50636320.html

Yeah with a few little easy mods these trucks look a lot better! Although its hard to see in your pictures that you painted the bench seat. Just a few screws on the bottom and you can open up the cab to paint the seat, steering wheel, etc..... I also dremel off the "trailer hitch" if it has one and paint the wheel wells inside along with the floor of the bed sometimes.

Good afternoon Al.....Well it is true that only one screw holds on each truck. However getting to that one screw is the fun part. Believe it or not, there is usually 4 screws from underneath, most likely hidden by the trucks you want to take off. What car are you working on? Clem

Al did you find the screw locations ? sometimes really tricky. I just did a Railking caboose that as Kadee pads, the screws where under the trucks and could only get to them by putting the driver between the wheel and the brake shoe, just enough room to get the driver in there but not the screw. MTH bodies are really overbuilt on a long car there might be more than four screws. And the roof might come off with the car ends be careful where you pry. Clem

Al i'm not sure, but here is my guess. When screw down from the top there is no pressure on the screw except when lifting the car. When on the track the large hole in the floor and the boss on the trucks take all the wear and the screw is tightened all the way down there is still no binding. Very strong way of doing this. MTH started out as a toy train co. Probably never thought of people converting to 2-rail. Basically the same truck they had from day one like Lionel. Where as Atlas and...

You can get some of these remaining In-Stock Norscot models from DHS Diecast, EVOT USA, 3000toys or DiecastModels.co. After they are sold out, you could expect WSI or Diecast Masters, the current license holder to reissue the popular models again. I remember buying an older Caterpillar model that NZG made, directly from Norscot, after Norscot acquired the license previously held by NZG. These are just my opinion, Thanks, Naveen Rajan

Vehicles in true 1/48 for O-Scale are pretty rare. I tend to use 1/50 for close-up scenes and occasionally a 1/43 vehicle in the distance. What are even harder to find are correct vehicles between, say the 1940s through the mid 1950s.

Athearn made a few...none recently, though. 1:48 die cast cars aren't very common, though. That's somewhat because the die cast car industry is a hobby unto itself. That, and the fact that much of this industry is based in Europe, where 1:43-1:45 is closer to their interpretation of O scale. But, more importantly, I'd suggest for 'forced perspective' use of 1:43 and 1:50 models in a 1:48 scale setting you put the larger close to the front, the smaller to the rear. That's what conveys...
