Union Pacific operations and trade scenarios

TomlinsonRunRR ·
The NY Times published an article on the UP describing how various trade scenarious and tariffs affect its operations. The story describes different levels of impact such as what the railroad ships and where, to the materials for its rails and cars. Some prior impacts are mentioned as well. I found it very interesting; videos and photos are included. Tomlinson Run Railroad P.S. - Someone out there is drinking more than their share of the beer that the line transports :-). Too funny. Similar in style to an anecdote I heard about Sam Walton, a Buick dealership and the guy who became one of his sales managers.

My cousin and I drove from Ne to California at the age of 17 a long time ago. We traveled in a 1950 chevrolet, we made Green River in one day's drive. We camped at the campground west of town. The double tracks have a pretty good climb to get out of Green River there. We hiked up the steeeep hill all the way up to the tracks to get a close up view. Of course we heard noise all night from them. I always take a long look at that campground whenever I go past that spot.

Re: Lionel TMCC UP SD90 freight set

Rock Island, I am really looking for money vs a trade, unless you had something specific. The only things I'm really looking for at the moment are Custom signals/atlas 21st century signals, or Lionel Amtrak phase 4 superliners or amfleets. Thanks for your interest!

Ben, I do have the boxes for both, I will try to send some photos as well. The engine has about a hour of run time and the caboose looks very nice and it has a flashing red light on one end.

Re: Union Pacific Corporation • 2017 Calendars are being shipped

Hi Ed & OGR Members My Official Share Holders Calendar, came today via US Mail. It was shipped from Omaha, NE in a black plastic envelope. It was slightly wrinkled, see photos below. Let me know if any of you guys received the share holders calendar, remember you must fill out the form in the investors kit. Railfan - Gary

Received mine Thursday, quite a bit later than usual. I never fill out a form, it just shows up in late August. Up until this year, they also had a postcard to mail in stating "Calendars were mailed to shareholders of record, if you did not receive one, and would like one, mail the card" That was always included with the September dividend notice. The calendar didn't show up and the card was not in the dividend notice, figured they did not have one this year. Shareholder since 2001.

Re: Union Pacific Corporation • 2017 Calendars are being shipped

ed new haven line ·
Thank you Gary. The first question that comes to mind is as a Union Pacific stock holder is why has Union Pacific stopped mailing their yearly calendar. I have been receiving one each year for the last several years. Is it because of a slow down in business and wanting to reduce their spending? When I purchased their stock in 2008 the price was $58.50 a share. Since then the stock had a 2 for 1 stock split and is currently around $95.00 per share with double the amount of shares that I had...

Lionel TMCC UP SD90 freight set

Ben ·
This is a beautiful set produced by Lionel in 2007. All features work on the locomotive and rolling stock, nothing broken. The engine has a great sound board with it, I believe it is very close to what a UP horn and 90mac should sound like. This is a lionmaster set so even though it is pictured on large curves on my layout, it can negotiate 0-31 curves. This is just the set NO TRACK OR TRANSFORMER! 350 OBO. A Union Pacific True Story

Number 90 ·
My friend John, here in Amarillo, grew up in Green River, Wyoming in the 1940's and '50's. He told me this story. Around 1950, he was in his early teens, and was down at the Green River depot watching the trains come and go. A well-dressed man on the depot platform asked John if he often watched trains, and he replied that he did. They continued to converse and the man handed him a business card identifying him as Arthur E. Stoddard, President and CEO, Union Pacific Railroad. John remarked...

New Lionel MTH O Gauge Union Pacific Tinplate engine and passenger car set

DFG56 ·
Today I recieved my new O gauge Union Pacific Tinplate steam engine and passenger car set. I got a great pre-order deal from Sidetrack Hobbies and the set is stunning. The MTH website showed the color as more of a bright yellow color, but they are a beautiful UP Armour yellow. The engine has traction tires and should do a good job pulling the 4 car set, but it gets part way around the track (using almost full throttle on my Lionel ZW 325 watt transformer and then the wheels just spin. Color of Union Pacific Caboose

When did UP change the color of it's cabooses from dark red to yellow. I am thinking of detailing a Lionel 1990 collectors Denver and Rio Grande wood sided caboose to UP and wondered if all the wood sided cabooses were dark red then changed to yellow on the steel sided cabooses. Detailing will include paint scheme, adding LED lights all around and other details. Plenty of pics of red wood sided cabooses on the net. Thanks, Dan

OK, business is down. But do ANY of the railroads plan to have any sort of cushion in their networks for traffic rebound/growth?
Reply

Re: Union Pacific Railroad • Press release.

juniata guy ·
Dominic: if the past is prelude to the future - no. Over the past 15 years the railroads have consistently been caught with their pants down when the economy rebounded. They are slow to pull equipment from storage and even slower to either recall furloughed employees or begin recruiting new ones. They are slower still to boost capex aimed at capacity expansion. This inevitably leads to service failures and unhappy customers till the railroads have thrown enough money at the problem to make...

After you receive yours, do me a favor and drop me an email. I recently bought one and the sound is very fuzzy. I have compared it to 2 others and they are all somewhat fuzzy. I'm just trying to figure out if it's the norm or not. I've inspected everything on mine and everything was new. So it's a bit of a mystery for me.

One thing that caught my attention was the speaker magnet seem to contact the frame... I'm not sure if that's a good idea. So I don't have any 5...
