That is a Regner 2 truck shay. Mostly wood that I built from a kit for him. I will see if I can get a better pic tomorrow. The engine to the left of it is also from Regner, called Lumberjack. The other 2 are 7/8ths scale engines, Emma and Fairymead, both from Accucraft. When he is gone, I am suppose to be getting his G scale stuff. Mike

Started organizing my train room, put up some shelves to hold most of the G scale I have, need to put one more shelf in yet to clear off my overhead loop in the living room so I can run trains this winter. Also got started putting up the new benchwork for the small 2 rail O scale layout I am going to build this winter. The top shelf are my friend's steamers that I caretake, only train that is mine is the cable car that is waiting on a battery to be installed. Mike

Travels of Frank S and the Autism Express car

As several here know, I am autistic, on the higher functioning end of the spectrum most days. Trains are my obession and passion since I was a very young child. I have done up 1 LGB European passenger car and 3 Kalamazoo USA style cars for Autism. I, like many autistics will flip/flop between what I am hyper focusing on within my obsession. For me this is between European and American prototypes. Also influenced by my need to use mostly tight R1 radius curves on my railway. My live steam...

Something I'd like to see

Dan Padova ·
I love electric locomotives. Some guys like steam, others diesel. I have always been fascinated by electrics however. LGB electric locos ( eloks ) have a selector switch that allows for quick and easy conversion to allow the loco to take power through the pantograph. I'd like to see O scale manufacturers do the same.

Re: Question about power for new ACE trains

Here are the trains I bought. The window inserts are loose in the Darstaed cars. I’ll need to fix that. The Bassett Lowke is a limited edition that was customized with a different name. It runs on 12 volt DC, so I am going to need a smaller transformer than my G scale. The engine is named Sir Frederick Banbury who was chairman of the British Great Northern Railway. His middle name was George. The cars and engine are British Railways livery. George

That's a pretty train for sure. Those are so tempting. Hey, if your designing a new layout, don't forget about the Merkur Turntable, I think it would be large enough to handle that loco!

This engine/tender combination has problems with the front engine & rear tender headlamp issues. Neither light is operation in forward or reverse motion. I checked the bulbs and both work OK. I installed a new interconnect cable between the engine & tender, and a new smoke unit. The chuffing sound is good...just no lights. I welcome and would appreciate any thoughts, troubleshooting advice and known solutions to this problem. Thank you for your reply.

My formal diagnosis is Asperger's Syndrome, but under the new DSM manual my therapist who diagnosed me says I would be somewhere between 1.5 and 2 on the 1-3 levels of ASD. Some days I am not to bad, other days I need supports to function. I can become non verbal when highly overwhelmed or injured. My 2 subjects of intense interest are trains and old lawn mowers. I turned the 2nd one into my career by learning how to repair them. I am hoping to take my trains and set them up at a show or two...

We are seeing much more in the ways of support for adult autistics now, with more being developed every day. Seen yesterday they are building a neighborhood just for adult autistics in Knoxville TN, kind of like condos, with some being group with staff on hand, some like a normal condo shared by 2 autistics and some for just one person, all depending on income level and thier need for support staff. All housing has easy access to support staff as needed. I suspect we will see more of this in...

Hopefully will start see more options here in Florida. My biggest fear is what happen after she turn 21 as she will still need a lot of support. Good thing is I will be able to keep her under my TRICARE coverage until she turns 26. But still because of the affordable care act a lot of providers have dropped out of TRICARE and MEDICARE/MEDICAD. TRICARE more due to the Stricter reporting and vetting to prevent fraud(which is good). MEDICARE/MEDICAD (Rampet Fraud)not as strict but more for what...

I think I am going to toggle my DC power supply to the track. I have been testing with a P.H. Hobbies PS3 filtered DC 3 amp power supply that I have for G gauge trains. It runs the engine very smoothly and has fine slow speed control. I was worried that it had too much power for this engine since the engine is rated at 12 volts and the power supply can put out 20 volts, but the throttle seems to have nice voltage control at the low end of the range. One thing I will need to do is to ensure...

Question about power for new ACE trains

George S ·
I'm looking into purchasing a new steam locomotive from ACE Trains. They look beautiful! I have a line on a nice set of Darstead cars for a great price that would go with the ACE engine. I understand that ACE Trains run on 24V DC. Of course, my layout is regular O gauge with Lionel transformers. The newer ACE engines say DC only. In the past, I thought you could use a simple circuit with a bridge rectifier to convert AC to DC inside the engine. Is this no longer possible? If it is, would I...

Thanks very much. Here’s a pic from the install. It’s a Lionel fan driven smoke unit. I can’t remember the part number off the top of my head. The bracket is from a Lionel Hudson cut down with a angle grinder. I tried using a Lionmaster Big Boy smoke stack adaptor for the twin blast pipes on the Mallard but there just wasn’t the space. I ended up using flexible silicone hose to direct the smoke. The smoke unit works great when coupled with Guns Super Chuffer. I would love 3rd rail/ERR to do...

Here are some details on the Darstaed cars. The bottom is stamped Darstaed. The litho on the side shows ACE Trains. The glue holding the window inserts has given way. I think the bodies might be brass? Is that right? That's what it looks like on the inside. There is also a decal bubbling on the frame. I'm thinking about trying a hair dryer on the decal to see if the bubble will go away. I'm not sure what glue to use for the window inserts. The diaphragms also seem a little distorted, but I...

Hello George, Very nice. Darstaed and ACE were partners at one time, as far as I understand it. Check to make sure that there isn’t / wasn’t some sort of tensioner piece of something that held the window inserts taught vs. glue. Regarding the bubbling of the detail strip... that is an issue as far back as the Darphin replicas. I have some spots of it on one of my Rheingold coaches and I’ve seen it on others. I have no solution to recommend. Kind regards, Chris

Thanks Chris. It's glue. I can see the dried remnants on both the stip and the body. I was wrong about the body being brass. It's clearly tin. It had a yellowish tint, but some of that was a reflection I was seeing. George

The rectifier doesn't have to be IN the train. You can do that behind the present ac trasformer on a toggle for ac/dc and second on/off/on 3pos or dpdt toggle for direction changing.

I was still on the 20v rating for ACE mention outright. 18v would be enough for near max speeds on a 20v motor, I'd guess is would like 10-15v normally. Rated at 12vdc I'm usually at 6-9v. And 6v at 1.5-3, 3v at 1.5max, and a 1.5v motor on a plastic 0-4-0 fame(L) that I'm having trouble with; in slowing it down enough to stay railed

Unfortunately, they have been sold out for years. I made one that I will try to get working again. Mine is 36" long and can handle my Allegheny. I took a trip to Menards and picked up 16 sections of O96 curve and got her running. I also bought Gorilla Clear Grip contact adhesive and glued the windows into one car. I still have one to do. This glue doesn’t ruin the window plastic if you make a mistake. It easily pulls off. I’m not sure the smoke unit works. It hasn’t yet. The boiler light does and didn’t at first. George
