The color code is the same on PS-2/3. Gray and green to the smoke motor, Blue and brown to the heaters. I would NOT use the heater and motor common connected together, disaster may result. Either green and brown wire can be used, they are doubled for engines with 2 smoke units.

PS3 Diesel Upgrade Kit

bruce benzie ·
Using the wire diagram and Diesel Upgrade notes by GGG made this upgrade bearable. The only unanswered question is the smoke unit. I have a PS2 smoke unit and will be installing that in the Diesel PS3 upgrade. Pins 8 and 10 are brown wires for return off the heater element, I assume you can use either one. Pins 16 and 18 are green wires for the fan. Same thing - I assume, you can use either one for return. The PV for the fan - pin 14 Blue? Where is the PV for the heater? Can I split the PV...

Make sure you wire the fan correctly, polarity is important. George's extra notes are very useful for the installation, the early MTH instructions are woefully inadequate. I strongly recommend you remove any wires you won't use from the harness, the tiny tangle of wires is almost unmanageable without doing that. Plan out the installation first and it'll go a lot smoother.

Thanks, VADarthDad for pointing out the current wiring diagram. There is an error in the speaker wire provided in the kit. The Yellow/White wires on the female connector are reversed. See attached photo. Pin 26 is speaker -, pin 28 is speaker +. The provided speaker wire is reversed. I think I should reverse the pin-outs on the speaker wire. Correct? Also note that I use an anti-static mat w/wrist strap. ...

Finished running all the very small wires, lites, speaker (repinned the speaker wires to correct polarity), connected the smoke unit and did the initial test run. Everything works correctly - EXCEPT - Ditch Lite #1. I know the purple wire is good because the MARS lites on pins 35 and 37 work. The black wire from pin 39 has continuity from the 40 pin connector thru to the molex. Obviously - no signal is getting to pin 39 from the board. Is there any other way to activate ditch lite #1? Can I...

Re: PS3 Diesel Upgrade Kit

The fan leads must be the proper polarity to have the fan run in the correct direction. The gray wire from pin 21 is the positive lead, the green wire (either one) is the negative lead. Do NOT connect the fan to pin 14, you'll have smoke and more if you do that! If you don't already have this diagram, it's useful to trace things out, you'll see how the fan motor is connected.

Very Old Stock Car

C.M McMahon ·
Originally, I picked up this car to get the die-cast trucks but decided to give a try to fixing it up. It was someone's attempt at a Reading stock car. I've added a truss rod and glued some wood back on to date, does anyone know who made these kits?

Could have been home made with the crude door guides, roof ribs and catwalk and such. It's neat enough I would keep it as is and run it, but then I am more a 3 rail prewar kind of guy....I'd likely put Lionel trucks on that and put the scale trucks on something that was more scale like. Either way is fine by my standards though.

Question about those trucks and coupler. What are those? The coupler is so small. Is that something used in 2 rail? I have a set of those that came off a kitbashed Lionel 1717. They are very heavy. Are they worth anything? Do you want them? George

It's still great to see some of the early kitbashed cars. The possibly athearn metal trucks are set up for two rail as well as the couplers. If the metal side frames are not crystallized you may be able swap in large flange wheel sets. As for the couplers, if you are running Lionel style couplers and with less than 48" diameter track, switch to lionel trucks and couplers. Or use it in a diorama like a stock pen, chicken coop, jail or scrapyard. If you send me a picture of the underside I can...

I haven't seen a ton of kits, but the flat roof makes it seem more likely to be scratch; the kits usually add a roof slope. Check for an isolated wheel set, this might have been on anything from T-rail to Outside 3rd rail as well. The lettering doesn't look hand painted to me. The serif work, vertical alignment, corners, and line variances in curves is too tight. It would done larger, be photographed, shrunk in developing, and then screen printed or litho printed, on the wood, to a decal or...

Why is everybody trying to advise the OP on how to make it Lionel compatible? He posted it in the 2-rail section. I collect older O Scale and have a nice collection of prewar aluminum cast stock cars. This one would not fit in my collection at all.

Time to keep this thread from death? We call the locomotives "doorstops", but have no real descriptive title for the cars - indeed some of the cars are doorstop-like. The cattle cars were typically cast aluminum and wood, with bronze and steel trucks. I would sooner part with my brass cattle cars than with these. Herewith the Lobaugh variety:

ps3 upgrade kit

I am upgrading my MTH UP 844 from ps2 to ps3. The ps2 5v board burned out. Can anyone answer some questions I have. This engine has the following lights Headlight. cab light. firebox. green marker LEDS in the engine. backup lamp in the tender. backup lamp in the engine. The ps3 steam upgrade kit only has a connector for headlight, backup light and marker LEDS for the tender. I will use the green Marker LEDS in the engine. The tender has no marker lamps. Can the cab and firebox lamps be used?

George is correct about using the 3/2 board. It will be easier in the end. To answer your questions about running lights in parallel: I never favored using the CV board when doing upgrades. (your engine doesn't have one). I always run the extra lights off of the headlight circuit. I solder together a 3 way split harness. Install a resistor for the marker light plug and you are good to go.

Re: ps3 upgrade kit

Thanks for the info. I have already installed the ps3 upgrade kit in the tender. As was stated, the hardware would not allow it to be in the engine. I will just put the firebox and cab lights on a voltage regulator the track power feeds. They will be on all the time. The green marker lamps will be in parallel with the headlight. As for the backup light in the engine, I have to either run a couple of extra wires to the tender to parallel the backup light or design a circuit that turns on the...

How are you mounting the engine harness PCB to the shell? How will you take the shell apart for maintenance? All PS-2 bulbs are 6V. As Alan said the tender harness in the upgrade kit has the green molex wire for the reverse light. Also has the black for coupler. It is a shame you went this way, but it is your engine. If you did a search you would see this had been discussed before on the forum. I am probably up over 12 FEF repairs.

YOU DO NOT WANT TO UPGRADE. The correct repair for this engine with the 5V Board in the engine, is to install the PS-32 board with 5V connectors into the engine. Otherwise you lose all lighting features and control of those lights in the engine. Premier engines have more lights and that is why board was put in engine. 10 pin harness restricts you to one control feature in the engine, let alone all the problems you will have trying to fit the upgrade harness on the engine shell. Take a look...

There is not a dislike for the kit, but my point was original PS-2 engines should be repaired as original. PS-2 5V steam especially premier, had the boards in the engine to benefit from direct wiring for all the various lights a premier engine has. Without being limited by the 10 wires of the harness. Later 5V and 3V used a mux board to gain additional engine feature. PS-3 Steam has 2 boards, one in tender and one in engine a data line tells the boiler board what to do. Plus retaining the...
