I can't make out the cab #, but it looks like an EMD SDL50 . The big box behind the cab is an extra large intake air filter. They are special order custom built by EMD for the SROG. Interesting info on their construction . The L is for a lightened version(less axle load) More info and some more even more more yet Google is your friend. Well, at least you can find a lot of information.

In the 1950's, they bought EMD cab units with sand filters covered with Farr grilles. If I remember correctly, the units were FP7's, but maybe they were FP9's, F7's or F9's.

I desire to install a Diesel PS3 upgrade kit in an MTH 20-2014-0 C30-7 locomotive. I can not find a 'Trainmaster' 3V sound file that has the chain file attached. Since I do not desire to mess up the sounds, can anyone help me as to where I can obtain a proper 3V sound file plus zipped chain file that would be suitable for this diesel? I have installed PS2 steam and diesel upgrade kits about 2 dozen time. I plan on continuity checking the 40-pin connector wires and eliminating the ones not...

Bruce, Anytime that you find a PS3 "sound file"on MTH's web page, download it and it will be a zip archive file that contains both the sound file and the chain file for the engine. This and a whole lot more is all in “The DCS Companion 3rd Edition!" This book is available from many fine OGR advertisers and forum sponsors, or as an eBook or a printed book at OGR’s web store!

LED lights on Diesel Engine

Hummer ·
Hello all, I have a TMCC Canadian Pacific diesel engine that has one LED light that is out on the front of the engine. It is a Lionel engine that is approx. 10-12 years old. Is this an easy repair or must this be sent to a service repair station? If so, any idea on what the cost would be and who would be a reliable service shop to repair if necessary. Any thoughts would be appreciated! Hummer

Re: LED lights on Diesel Engine

The engine was part of a Canadian Pacific Grain Train set purchased in approx. 2006-2007. The number came from the box the engine was packaged in. Not really much I can add from here. Do repair shops fix things such as LED lights?? Thanks, Hummer

Re: LED lights on Diesel Engine

I'm sure it can be fixed. I suspect it's on a light board, that's about the right vintage for them to be using that technique. The trick is finding the correct LED's, I typically replace markers in pairs as I can get matching LED's that way.

I always find it interesting how our individual opinions may vary...that's what makes this Forum great! Although I do agree that this is a nice-looking paint scheme--and will make for yet another cool O-scale model--I think it's a very poor attempt by NS at doing a D&H "Heritage" unit. Other than the blue and gray (which don't even appear to be the correct shades), IMO it bears no real resemblance to the D&H's classic "lightning stripe" scheme.

Don't get too attached, the unit is supposedly back in the paint shop to have the blue parts painted black. At the very least it is being modified at the request of a competing company.

I think you've been duped. As many others have said on the other thread, I don't think this has anything to do with the D&H. For one, there are no D&H markings and two, it is clearly marked for "DC to AC".

PS3 Diesel Upgrade Kit

Using the wire diagram and Diesel Upgrade notes by GGG made this upgrade bearable. The only unanswered question is the smoke unit. I have a PS2 smoke unit and will be installing that in the Diesel PS3 upgrade. Pins 8 and 10 are brown wires for return off the heater element, I assume you can use either one. Pins 16 and 18 are green wires for the fan. Same thing - I assume, you can use either one for return. The PV for the fan - pin 14 Blue? Where is the PV for the heater? Can I split the PV...

Finished running all the very small wires, lites, speaker (repinned the speaker wires to correct polarity), connected the smoke unit and did the initial test run. Everything works correctly - EXCEPT - Ditch Lite #1. I know the purple wire is good because the MARS lites on pins 35 and 37 work. The black wire from pin 39 has continuity from the 40 pin connector thru to the molex. Obviously - no signal is getting to pin 39 from the board. Is there any other way to activate ditch lite #1? Re: Union Pacific metal signage Diesel nose ??

Number 90 ·
It's obvious to me that these pieces were produced for the nose of a UPRR cab unit. The center piece was bolted to the nose door and the wings were bolted onto the nose on each side of the nose door. To know what class of locomotive they were mounted on, you'll need to assemble them and see how much the wings slope upward. The more slant there was on the nose, the more the wings sloped upward. You could also use the center piece to match the width of the nose door, which I am certain was...

I have 2 Chessies The GP-20 was an ebay purchase- Its a MPC Lionel. Runs great but the e-unit is a little balky at times. The S-1 is a K-line from Trainz.com- runs great but I had to re-wire the motors in series (no it doesn't have the series/ parallel switch), it was lightning fast and I couldn't switch cars without it crashing. Both get heavy use on my layout- which you a looking at about half of (yea its small)

Yes, one A unit is powered and one is a dummy. Bill, your recommended test is a very good idea, and I will do that test. In the meantime, I ran both of my LC+ engines and videotaped them. I now believe both engines are fine and highly recommend LC+ for those of us that cannot afford the most expensive engines in the $1,500 to $2,000 range, and for those of us who like some new technology and still want to keep running trains simple, but don't want to go crazy with new technology that makes...

Your suggestions are exactly correct and much appreciated: alligator clips, jumpers, cradle for the engine, etc. You are train doctors like my local train doctor friend, who will do these things to confirm that both motors in the powered unit are running. The long run on my layout is the result of having a half basement (not a full basement under the whole house), a very accommodating wife who let my trains invade her laundry room in the basement, and a strong desire to have the trains go...

My brand new LC+ New Haven FA AA (powered and non-powered units) are gorgeous and smoke beautifully, but the pulling power is weak. Please let me know what you think could be the cause of the weak pulling power. The 2018 Lionel catalogue says on page 102 that the diesels have dual maintenance free motors (single motor in NW2), so that powered unit in...

Thanks, Hokie72. Mine struggles pulling 6 or 7 freight cars. It also struggles in spots on my layout pulling 4 Williams passenger cars shown in my video. This surprised me because my LC+ Pacific Steamer pulls longer freight trains and passenger trains with ease. I run the LC+ engines in remote mode, and have the track voltage fixed at 18 volts, and use the remote unit to control the speed of the train. Arnold

Guys, Thanks for all the help. I think we are getting to the bottom of this. Clem, Yes, this a dummy (Non Powered, or NP) unit. You are quite correct in that the mentioned wheel set is not seated correctly. That is part of the problem. It will not seat correctly in any of the 6 slots available. The flat tipped pins make no difference in the way the wheel set goes in. I left them installed. Clem and WillyGee, I did try your suggestion to install the truck plates without the wheel sets. Actually, I don't want to change out the sets, unless I have to. The problem is an NS Non-power unit that does not track correctly through a curve. I have several other NP units of the same type that go through fine, and up until this unit, have not had issues with the track. So things point to the engine. I checked the lead truck on a flat piece of track (Checked with a straight edge.) The truck can have only 3 of the 4 flanged wheels touching at once. So I think I've found the problem, so...

Good morning Chris....Is this a dummy unit? I notice in your first photo the lead axle is not seated all the way down on the right side. also try mounting the axles without those flat tipped pins..And like mentioned above try putting the truck block and plate (cover) together without the wheels installed, should fit perfect. I have about a dozen of these six axle truck locomotives that I changed wheels on and all are no problems. Clem

I spent the afternoon trying to figure out what is going on with this engine. I started by getting out another NP unit and placing it on my piece of straight track. Sure enough, no wobble and all 6 axles turn freely. So back to my problem child. To keep track of things, I numbered the axle positions 1-6, front to back. This means slots 2 and 5 have the blind wheel sets. First thing I found out is I have 2 problems in addition to the wobble: Axles 1 and 6 do not spin freely. Front truck...

Hard lesson to learn, but if you had the cap why not just solder it in and test it right with board attached. Same goes for guys that test smoke unit while holding it only to drop it and short the fan motor leads to the chassis and take out the board. My point was you could test board with out cap. If it powered up replace cap and then test. At least you have spare parts for other engines now G
