I am getting ready to convert a PS 1 locomotive to TMCC and I am installing an AC commander in it. I have decide that I will run the smoke unit off of track power and connect it to a switch and use the smoke out put for the cab lights. My questions are what do I connect the number board lights to as right now they were powered off of the PS 1 main board. I know that the orange and brown wires are track power and ground and the protocouplers are self explanatory. There is a constant voltage module but I do not know what the voltage out put is. I guess the bottom line is, where to I connect the lighting to the AC commander? The MTH product number is 20-2138. Any help would be appreciated.

You can wire the constant voltage module direct to track power, problem solved.  If you want directional lighting, then you need to supply more information.  I typically replace all of that for a TMCC conversion.  The smoke unit can be wired to the smoke output of the ERR board, that gives you command control of the smoke.

You can use the existing PS/1 electrocouplers with TMCC as well.

I was figuring on wiring the directional lighting to the appropriate points on the commander but I don't know what the voltage of the lights as they were being powered directly from the PS 1 board. I have the electro couplers covered as I have hooked those up before.  This locomotive also has lit numberboards. I can replace the headlights with LED but I belive that they are 6 volts.

John, I did what you siggested and changed them to LED which are positioned perfectly to recieve power from the commander. The lights are plugged into sockets on the shell which in turn have springs that touch those plates. I will still leave the constant power board connected to track power. The locomotive actually makes it convenient to connect the lights and smoke unit as the copper padds keep everything low. I didn't notice until last night since this locomotive was made in 1996 it has no lit number boards or marker lights so no problem there. I will post a video when I am done. Thank you very much for your help.

Typical PS-1 diesel have interior and number board lights off the CV Board and they are 6V bulbs.  You might have a track power bulb at 18V.  BUT directional Headlights are powered off the PS-1 board and they are 1.5V bulbs and will not work with TMCC.

Any light you are power off the TMCC board needs to be a 16-18V bulb or an LED with appropriate resistor.

Markers are markers and PS-1 are parallel wired while PS-2/3 are series wired.  Follow normal resistor values base on TMCC voltage or track power.

PS-1 could be off the CV with a 150ohm resistor, or they could be directly off the PS-1 marker plug which has built in resistor.

Just normal lighting stuff.  Match it to how Lionel engines are wired, or leave the MTH CV stuff alone as normal.  G

After completely breaking down the locomotive inside the only lamps being powered by the lighting board are the interior lamps which are 6 volts, this is an older locomotive so the cab light stays on. There are no marker or number board lights for the same reason. The only thing I wasn't sure about was the output of the TMCC board which I would have put a meter on but thanks for saving me some time. I could control the cab light by hooking the lighting board to the TMCC module and leave the smoke unit connected to the track power but I haven't decided yet. I will put the appropriate resistor in line with each head lamp and reverse lamp. So far the project is coming along slowly as I have very limited time to work on it but I will post a short video when it is done.

Actually, in sone of the diesels I've worked on here the headlights are also 6V, and they are powered from the lighting board.  The 1.5V is used to trigger them.  Here's the board I refer to.

Yes the F and E and trainmaster and a few more.  But the traditional Diesel like the one he is talking about uses does not use a board like that.  They have a double 1.5V off the PS-1 board.  G
