I would not know, but buffers and cowcatcher? Something South African I would think (or made for that market)?

I could not find this loco in one of the British Toy Trains series books.

The clockwork mechanism looks like Brimtoy but the shell looks more Hornby.

@Jim O'C  I think I can safely bet my left knacker the shell is not Hornby

The mech is def not up to the usual robustness of the time and does suggest a "lower" tier manufacturer , which is simlar as well to the Bing British which had a lightweight mech, as well as Brimtoy/Wells/Mettoy

This shot also shows the fitment of the cowcatcher and cylinders , they are fitted in a way that looks to me to be a factory add on to a basic frame . The attachment doesnt speak to me of a layperson add-on ? I could be wrong of course ...

This also came from an estate of a pretty well connected collector here in Aus so I kind of expect some kind of provenance that died with him sadly ... I note the weight is also similar to Mettoy/Brimtoy ?

On the front page of the Brimtoy book (book 4 of the series) is a loco with buffers and cowcatcher, but it is certainly not the one you have:

Brimtoy used the No 5600 on a few of their locos. They did make a loco for the US market with a cow catcher it is recognisable by the "L" shaped cab cutout.  Bryan ( new member)

The 5600 and russet brown is an homage to the LMS railway in the UK , also used by Hornby for their Tank engines (No.1 and 501 series ) I know the L shape cab cutout Brimtoy to which you refer and its interesting that it too has cowcatcher AND buffers as well .. This one tho is stumping me

The 7000 loco (or 382 loco and tender combo) are the only Brimtoy locomotives I see listed in either Foster books (3 and 4) on Brimtoy with the cowcatcher/buffer configuration and the UK version had buffers only. 

Darn I was really pinning my hopes on it being recognisable from one of the Foster books ... I have been able to track down pretty much everything in my collection apart from this loco and one other ...

However this one ^^^^ I am pretty sure is a "bespoke " period one off

These two Mystery locos will drive me to my grave LOL!!!
