Engine started to make a ticking sound. Thought it needed few drops of oil again. But its on a shelf layout, and doesnt run all day. After turning engine over, then onto its side, i saw something sliding on the driveline. The inner race of a bearing to the gearbox has separated. So is this something I can get myself, or do I have to send the whole engine in for warranty service.

I can't even figure out what part your talking about.  MTH does not use bearings with races.  They are bushings.  Is this part of drive gear or just linkage?  Picture?  If something like a sleeve on the eccentric, MTH would probably just send you the part so you can change it if you want.  IF your saying something separated out of the chassis gear box, I would send that back.  G

The gear box bearings do have bearings with races.  I am not sure how you were able to see it from the bottom of the locomotive.

Here is the image.

After a call to MTH, I get a new assembly without sending engine in, and waiting...Gave me the part #. I'll post after this.

After I rolled engine wheels up, then on its side, that's when I saw the inner race. Prolly got lucky seeing it as very little gap between cab and drive wheels.

Hopefully just a bad bearing.

Bearing has an outer flange to keep it seated in place. The race is what holds the ball bearings in place.

What is the product number of this DL.  I have never seen on like that.  Most have a bronze bushing.  So this was new to me.  Plus I thought your where talking about an axle bearing.  G

FWIW G, I am currently working on a UP FEF from early 2000s that has the same setup with ball bearings on the worm shaft. Never opened any other MTH gearboxes ao I have no idea how common this is.

Glad you got it running again. If you need more grease Labelle 106 grease is a great option. It's what I use in my locomotive gear boxes.

Out of curiosity what motor is in your Premier Southern  Pacific GS4? I have a Premier Southern Pacific GS4 from 1999 (PS1 converted to PS2 3V) and it has a big Pittman 9434 motor. I'm curious if MTH is still using that motor in their current Premier steam locomotives.

If your bearing failure is like the one in the picture at the top of this thread, the repair can be completed with minimal tools. The dog bone coupler is pressed on the worm shaft. Place the entire shaft in a pair of needle nose pliers, or similar. Drive the shaft off the coupler. Replace your bearing. Take note of any spacer(s) on the shaft trapped behind the bearing. Make sure it’s put back before tapping the coupler back on. Put a drop of loctite shaft locker on the coupler in the hole for the shaft..knock the coupler on the shaft with something wooden or hard plastic....one other thing, before you pull the coupler off, take a look at how far/deep the coupler is pressed on...make note of that depth for installation....746C90F5-02EB-4E63-AF06-9F3F1DEDCED8

How long did yours last?

Mine was 4 months old. But didnt run everyday.

If I can figure out how to pull apart... I'm guessing worm gear is pressed on.. I could replace bearing and have a backup.

That belonged to one of my customers.  I'm guessing around a month.  I think the engine was an M1 Mountain.  I cannot see any numbers on the bearings to get a replacement.  MTH sent me a whole new shaft assembly.

If you do find a replacement bearing, would you be kind enough to post the part #?

Thanks, and good luck.
