I"m even bothered by the Lionel name on the chassis, so I too am bothered by that Big L on the boxcar door. IMHO, a goof by the folks at Big L who still have a hard time understanding the AF market.

While we are talking about this, Why don't they put out the PRR 0-6-0 engine?  (21004/21005) They are hard to come by, a neat engine, that could easily wear other RR names and would be a great starter set engine.

It is part of the American Flyer product line... that is why S gauge American Flyer items are sold in specific blue boxes and have complete catalogs (or sections) devoted to them.

But even those beautiful blue and yellow boxes have Lionel written right on them too.

The Lionel name is, in fact, on the box.  However it's obvious the "American Flyer" name is a bit more prominent.  In the case of the boxcar, there is NO "American Flyer" logo visible on the body at all.  I am not an "American Flyer" fan/collector/operator, but I can understand his dismay at seeing the Lionel logo instead of the "American Flyer" logo.

While to me it's no big deal, especially since I'm not collecting contemporary tradition-style Flyer anymore, I can understand the disappointment.

In prehistoric times before PC's and smart phones ruled the Earth,  I was a computer repair guy.  I did an installation of a system that had our old branding.  The data processing manager said basically (paraphrasing to protect the innocent) "Crap, I remember that from the old days."

I asked him "Would you feel better if it had our current logo?"

He said "Yes."

So, I went down to my car and got a couple of stick-on logo's I had, and placed them over the old logos.

The manager said "Thanks, I feel better now."

Perception is reality, or so I'm told.

Are you aware that a good percentage of Lionel's rolling stock has been made in the USA for at least 10 years?   Check out their catalog and see each item that is marked with a "Made in USA" logo. 

You won't find the "Made in USA" logo on any of the American Flyer catalog pages...

And I found it exactly on 8 pages out of the 250 page 2020 v1 catalog.  Hardly a "good percentage."

The Marx branding has been gone for decades, K-line as far as I know never used it, and the HO trains lost it too over the years. Then the trains were separated from the brand. Given how long Lionel has owned American Flyer, and how the Ives name is also long gone, has been since before post war, and that is where the E-unit came from in all post war engines, I am surprised how long it took to get here.

Last time I looked, the upcoming aquarium car will be branded American Flyer:

The American Flyer brand isn't going to go away unless Lionel drops S entirely.

And how many folks remember the A.C.Gilbert, O27 boxcar Lionel once made...
