You can charge the MTH battery via track power but if it is a Proto2 or Proto3 model, track charging also will advance the loco's chronometer unless you use the separate charging port option (if available).  First generation PS2 models did not offer a separate charging port like the later editions.  Proto1's only charging option was via track power.

What happens if you have a brief interruption of power.  You engine will shift to forward and off the shelf it will go. If you know you have battery that is not beyond useful life, you can do a quick charge on the track like that before you operate it and it will charge while you run it.  If battery really dead, your better off using a charge port if you have it, or open up and take battery out and charge it in separate battery charger.  Poor battery for early PS-1 can cause software scramble that will require a tech chip to fix.  G
