Smartphones are merely mobile computer devices with a separate data function tied to cell networks. Otherwise, it functions just like a tablet, such as an iPad, that works solely off Wi-Fi. (Yes, you can buy tablets with cellular ability, but most people don’t.)

Many folks download the app to their Wi-Fi-only tablets and operate the trains that way. There’s no reason to use cellular data at all.

I asked, because my son and two daughters have upgraded their phones many times over the years.  Sometimes they trade the older phones in for newer ones.  Sometimes they just throw away the old ones, despite the fact they still work.  I'm going to ask them to let me have any old phones they no longer have any use for, when they decide to upgrade again.
