I have recently aquired a JAD Hiawatha locomotive.  I know the passenger cars are very difficult to find, so I am going to

make up a freight set like that what was offered in 0 gauge.  The 0 gauge version used 800 series freight cars.  I am

thinking of using 200 series freight cars.  500 series might be too small.  I have no cars to set next to the locomotive except

some 10 series cars from older sets that I have, so I am not sure of my choice.  I will place the Ives coupler with a latch

coupler.

BlueComet400 is absolutely correct!  I am Sean Battaglia, son of Richard "Dick" Battaglia.

Thank You to John for getting that correct as many people think that it was John Daniels' initials.

I grew up going to TCA and TTOS conventions and loved every minute of it.  I have some beautiful JAD sets that have never seen a track and some that have been enjoyed.

If anyone wants to chat I am open and can be be contacted at (I am going to spell out my number weirdly so that te bots do not get it but feel free to (t...e....x....t...  m... e..)

three     1    zero     4    eight   9    five  too    too    five.

Thanks JAD Fans!

BlueComet400: THANK YOU much for clarifying the initials, "JAD"! I, like many others, incorrectly thought they were those of John Daniel!

Many people thought it was John's initials. If I'm not mistaken, John Daniel's middle initial was A, adding to the confusion. I sure wish Arno was still around. He was a great guy and extremely knowledgeable on all things modern-era standard gauge.

Nice-looking GG1 set! I had a set of the heavyweight cars minus the diner. After several years of searching for the diner to complete the set, I decided to sell the cars. I really liked the way they look behind a 392e, but I prefer complete consists or none at all. So, without the diner, I sold them.

Although I recently made the decision to eliminate Standard Gauge from my tinplate layout, I still love it and am glad and proud to own a JAD Hiawatha. Shortly after I bought mine, I somehow connected with Dick Battaglia. During our conversation, he offered to send me a JAD advertising poster. I gladly accepted, and asked if he would sign it. He signed it, and it is now framed and hanging in my train room.

The JAD Hiawatha is a beauty for sure.  My Dad and I visited the home of the late Bob Hornish back in the 70's, and he had an amazing layout complete with T-Rail track and wide-radius Standard Gauge track that he made using O-72 rails and Standard-Gauge ties. This was before anyone was producing wide-radius SG track for profit. The one train I always remembered from that visit was his Standard Gauge Hiawatha, and had never seen another one since then.  Fast-forward to 2004, when I looked for him at York and introduced myself to him. I asked him if he still had the Hiawatha; he then said the magic words: "Yes, and it's for sale if you want to buy it." We worked out a deal, made the exchange at the next York meet, and I now own the same JAD Hiawatha that caught my attention when I was a kid.

Here it is after LEDs were added to the loco and cars.

Nice to see all the replies.  I am using some No. 10 freight cars for now, budget considerations.  The 10's look pretty drab, but they will do for now. I found a No. 17 caboose painted yellow.  I was going to strip and repaint until I read of the red primer early variation.  This caboose has it on the bottom and under the roof.  I have found that the extra friction from the many wheels of the freight cars make this loco work harder than with the passenger cars.  I had to put Std-72 track on the layout.  Pictures to come.  Technology willing.

I would like to note that in addition to the original three JAD partners, others were involved in the manufacture of JAD cars including Dick Mayer.  If you look closely on the top shelf, you can see some unpainted JAD Hiawatha cars in Dick's workshop, which unfortunately was burned to the ground a few years ago.

And I should note that much to the displeasure of the original partners, Dick continued to produce and sell JAD cars without the partners permission.  In fact, as an avid Milwaukee Road collector and a long time RichArt customer, Dick sold me one (or possibly two of these "aftermarket" JAD Hiawatha cars.  I didn't know that he was selling them on the side.

Mr. Nissen,

I am a new member to the OGRFORM.  I have recently found your article on OGRFORM that showed the 3D printed John Daniels GG1 motor frames.  I have one of these GG1’s and both motor frames have zinc rot and are in need of replacement.  I would like to know if you have these frames for sale or the 3D printer program available.

Any assistance you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
