Are they going to produce a SOO LINE diesel loco in the 1962-1973 era scheme?

Andrew

Not in this catalog.

Legacy Diesels:
E8 A-A pairs in Frisco, NYC, DL&W, Southern, ugly Amtrak patch-job, and the Juinata Terminal PRR Restoration scheme)
Train Masters in FM, DL&W, Southern, SP Black Widow, and Virginian
More SD40s in CP Rail, C&O, CNW, GM&O, CNJ, and an ugly CSX-C&O mash-up thing.
ES44AC in BNSF, UP, KCS de Mexico, CSX Law Enforcement scheme, CSX First Reponders Scheme, CSX dark future, CSX Veterans, and SVTX Lease Unit

Anything else Southern? Have been waiting for Southern green F3 or F7 units painted correctly.  Not sure why this scheme seems to keep being overlooked by Lionel or other manufacturers.

Excited for the new North Pole Central scale freight! Haven't seen a picture though I'm hopeful from the description.

How can one have a scale set for a railroad that has never existed!

Quite simple.  Use Scale cars with the fictional decoration.  Cars themselves are still scale, just have no prototype for the road name.

Obviously people who don't want something that has no prototype will know better for their own desires and not buy them, but some people will enjoy the more detailed look vs. the O27/Starter Set type items.

This is not a new concept, it's been done before with several scale sized NPC engines, as well as the Polar Railroad series.  It's obviously a winner, or the idea would have been a one-and-done.

You mean like this? Lionel MPC era - done correctly. I picked up an A-B-A, and converted them to TMCC/Railsounds.

Sure, I anxiously await the reveal of the 2020 Lionel catalog, but the real disappointment is the lag time between catalog reveal and product arrival at my house is usually between a year and whenever (which could mean never).

Better take your "life-extender" pills. Some of the items show a 2021 arrival time.

I better go exercise.

Screenshot_20200119-012752_GmailI am ordering the Amtrak E8 pair.  Lionel, great job on this pair!  Two of the very first units!  I always wished Amtrak had adopted this proposed scheme.   And the patched Seaboard unit, that's how it was. As Amtrak began its attempt to rebuild a network abandoned by its predecessors, it quickly started branding a new network.  Historic units here.  Curious whether Lionel will paint over the porthole windows as shown or plate them over the way Amtrak did due to corrosion around the windows?  I assume the portholes will be there, I am ok with that, but if they plate them over like the real one I will be impressed by Lionels efforts!

However,

I would have ordered the Conrail mechanical reefer but I do not want nor have ever heard of one that smokes... at $199, no thanks.  Sell me a regular one I will buy it.  Same with all the domes.  Get rid of the forced camera and I am a customer.   Also, more black widow SP, come on, give us one shot at SP bloody nose F units just once for the FIRST time in O scale history across all manufacturers!   All manufacturers repeatedly pump out black widow and daylight SP paint.  Could one of you just throw a one time bone out with just ONCE a set of bloody nose SP in GM covered wagon F or E units?

The set is a 120th anniversary set so the idea is to throw back to traditional postwar sets with the warbonnet and OPERATING freight cars. Operating milk car and log car are included.  It is a very nice postwar tribute

So many anniversary sets, I get confused.

This was a proper one -- F-3s with aluminum passenger cars!

  • Holy diesel, what a set
  • It's bound to go into the history books as one of the greatest Lionel sets of all time, complete with TMCC too
  • Run one train with the ABBA. Or make up 2 trains; one with the powered A and dummy B, the other with the powered B and dummy A
  • 4 motors, 2 in the powered A unit, 2 in the powered B unit
  • Pullmor motors, magnetraction, and many other features available only from Lionel
  • Railsounds in one of dummy B's. Engineer figure, lights and electocouplers in dummy A and powered A
  • Couple 2 trains together into 1 with command control while moving, and seperate them without ever stopping
  • Aluminum cars include new overhead lighting, all have silver passenger trucks, Lighted Drumhead on observation car, overhead interior lighting, furnished interiors and standing and sitting people
  • Diner has Station Sounds. Set has railsounds, crew talk, TowerCom, large door aluminum baggage car (even has storage racks for mail/baggage transport, combo car, 3 full Vista dome cars and observation, and is 165 inches long
  • F3's have die-cast bases and trucks. B units include new die-cast bases not previously manufactured

These are not correct Southern F3s. These are based on the E-8s with the Southern Crescent on the nose. I want true 1950s era green F units, mainly F7s. 3rd Rail did some a few years ago, but the green looked to be the wrong shade (too light).

Should have done the Amtraks as an anniversary units next year.  Amtrak's 50th.

The 4316 was a one of a kind, for the beginning of Amtrak.  The from SCL patch was done to get the Amtrak name out quickly, but the patch was done in such a way it did not have to be redone when it got full Amtrak treatment.

Considering the number of PC and SCL E units, the 4316 livery would have been great on those.  But on the SDP and later models, not so much.

The smoke from the mechanical refrigerator cars most likely is meant to represent the cold air inside and the hot air outside interacting, like what happens with frozen carbon dioxide or dry ice.

The high-volume model railroad stores might be taking $30 to $50 off of the catalog price of $199.99.

Andrew

MTH did something similar quite a while ago (10, maybe even 15 years ago? edit: darn, I'm getting old - 2001 for the first one, I think here's a link to a search on MTH to show a lot of them with this feature - they also had a figure pushing a load out the door to a ramp.)

The thing I vaguely recall about them was there was a pretty difficult angle to load the smoke fluid, I think.  I think JT's Megasteam sells a little plastic bottle with an angled needle tip that helped.

I have that set. New and still in the original packing box. I plan to get it onto the layout this year, with a bunch of other stuff. Should be no problem, as I have more time on my hands, having just retired!

Thinking more on the AMTRAK E-8 set, it does limit prototypical operation to New York - Florida trains. The one-off scheme not withstanding, the patched SCL units seemed to stay in Florida service in 71 - 74 era. The slides I have seen show the units mainly in Florida pulling the Silver Meteor, Silver Star, and may have powered The Champion.

Western early AMTRAK trains used ex-UP E-8/9 units or the new SDP40 for long distance service.

Of course in our condensed 3-rail world anything is possible and created.

Now I need to find the Lionel AMTRAK red nose versions from a few years ago to make some fun "Kodachrome" era passenger trains.

Heck, I'm surprised that no one has asked when the Lionel 2020 Vol. 2 catalog is coming out!

Those units were actually on the Broadway Limited for over 1 year, especially the black E8 with proposed paint scheme.  There are pics out there of the units in Detroit, MI, Columbus, OH, National Limited, & maybe Lake Cities or Lake Shore Shore Limited before it was cut and later reinstated.   I think with Amtrak you can count on one thing, anything goes back then.

The look is close enough to the prototype Southern F-3s for me, in any case. Can't see a whole lot of difference from the MPC version.

All good points! But I still just want a piece of rolling stock, no add on fog, sound, cameras, hot boxes, harmonica music, or anything else they try to sell $15 worth of plastic for $199.  An $80 Conrail reefer with no gimmicks is acceptable and still heavily priced for their profit.  Same with the camera domes, I am out.  Cheaper for me to buy existing Union Pacific and sent off to Christine for accurate painting.

So let's see I can go and get a 2020 catalog at some local hobby shops but cannot see it on line until tomorrow?

Wow, can you say 'stupid marketing?'

Every time a train manufacturer does something that I find inconvenient it diminishes my enthusiasm to want to even think about buying something new.

In the grand scheme of things, a day or two or a week is not really going to change the fact that the order deadlines are probably over a month away and the products will be out later in 2020.   It would be impossible for Lionel to insure that all catalogs get put out at the moment they go online.  Dealers want to start pushing sales so if a  customer who buys Lionel is in the store Saturday before the Monday rollout, it behooves them to hand out a catalog.  Relax, the trains will be there.

I think this is a positive thing for Hobby shops because it brings in foot traffic. I went to both of my local Hobby shops this weekend and got two catalogs total, and purchased a few other things.
