I need some help with track configuration ,  I'm using O-27  42" dia.   The room has a inside corner that's giving me trouble.  Maybe someone with a Track program could help me.

The problem is the short 40" wall that turns into the 65" wall then to make a left turn onto the 9" shelf

straight a way.  Also I want to do a double track.

This is what it looks like,  I've rough cut the shelf to help figure it out.

My other corners aren't any problem.  I cut my shelf brackets out of a 2 x 8.

Thanks in advance of any help you could share.

Doug

I used wood posts anchored to the ceiling and track base, which I eventually replaced with miniature turned posts. Any type of support from the ceiling to the base will work, as long as it is anchored to a ceiling joist. I don't think I would trust toggles in just the sheetrock. In my situation, the floor above is storage above the covered patio of my workshop, so I used 1/8" threaded rod from the ceiling to the floor in the attic, which I counter sunk into the flooring.

I assume your O42 is 12 sections of track for a circle. That would be 3 for a right angle turn. On the inside corner of your 40" wall, try making the shelf bigger and "cut" the corner by using one and a half sections of curve or two sections of curve. Then add straights and complete your 'S' curve on the outside corner with the same two sections of track.

Also, why don't you loose lay your track on the floor to see how it will fit. You can even lay your shelf on the floor with the track on top. You may even be able to mount some of your track to the board before you put the shelf up.

Maybe someone will draw it for you but you could always layout the track on the floor. This will also allow you to check out your track spacing to verify your spacing is adequate. Start with at least 4 1/2" on curves and entry to curves.  The shelf over the 3 gang switch box will have to be wider.

Sorry, just saw George posted the same idea.

Thanks for the advice,  I did have it laid out on the plywood in the driveway, however I only have 2 pieces of half curves and a couple of 10" straights plus about 40  3ft straights.     Before I started cutting track I was hoping someone with RR Track could give me some specifics.

Rail,  I like your old drill press,  I remember having one like that back on the farm.

Boomer0622,

Well, here is an S through the corner area using O54 and O42 set on 5.5" center rail spacing. I believe that you can have 1' wide shelf width on the long walls, although, it could get tight for overhang.

Just the first concept to try a solution. The grid is 12" blocks. A 16" shelf should handle the outside corner. I think I have to push the inside turn at the top closer to wall, like the left side. It is about 2.5" on the left to stay on a 12" shelf. I don't know if the train will hit the wall with that clearance.

I would use O54 on all of the outside curves (those closest to the wall) and O42 inside to create a double main.

You should only need to cut some fitters at the ends of the straights to fit the curves in the corners and maintain the center rail spacing. Half straights and smaller.

How do you want to fit it or build it? What wall clearance will work?

Moonman,  Thank you, the picture is what I really needed.    I'm locked in with 9" shelfs along the straight walls.   The shelf along the 65" wall sticks out 28" at this time,  I plan on cutting it back once I get the track in place.  I only have 42" curves at this time,  is there any way to make them work,  maybe adding some short straights ?    If I really need 54" curves there is a train show coming up next month in Jacksonville ( or maybe some forum members may have some they would part with ) .  The 2-1/2" clearance on corners will work even 2" measured from the rail.

I also agree with the suggestion to create a tunnel through the upper section of your closet. On my shelf railroad (RIP '08) I tunneled through the Domestic CEO's Kitchen Pantry to avoid an awkward curve arc situation--see rear track with passenger cars on lower shelf.

She was not happy with the tunnel, but I reminded her that the deal was to "deed" me the 14x32x20'h Kitchen/Breakfast Room wall space for removing layout from her Den Carpet. But I eventually had to agree not to run trains while she was watching Oprah.IMG_0004.

Ok, here is something that uses only O42 and lands on 9" shelves on the long walls. Inside line is 2" from and the outside line center rail 3 7/8" from the inside.

There are two cut straights. (as labeled)

I hope you have factory short straights - I used a couple of those - they are not half of a full, but, are 4.88" long

You need about 16" wide on the 40" side of closet and 12.5" on the 65" side with some filler cuts for matching the long walls inside corners - You should be able to cut down (narrow) over the door quite a bit

I think that works with "what ya got"

Carl,  thanks, I'll see if I can get this plan to work.  However I noticed two different numbered curve pieces on the inside curve at the 40" & 96" .  The inside has   #65113  and all the rest are # 65049 .   If I have to cut a new inside corner shelf it's only a 1/2 sheet of plywood.

Just FYI,  I cut the rest of the inside corner shelves using O-48 Fastrack as a pattern, I hope they will work.

Correct your are, sir.

Here is the correct version with all O42

I am so sorry that I am not concentrating for your project - hopefully this is correct - this looks like you could flip the shelf shape around the closet over - it is 16" wide on the now 40" side and 12" on the 65" side over the door.

I removed the full straight on the 40" side to make it work.
