I picked up two of the just released MTH Amtrak Genesis engines from my dealer this afternoon. One is 20-21188-1 - Amtrak Wave paint #84 and the other is 20-21192-1 in the Amtrak Phase IV Heritage paint #184. The station stop feature on the #84 (Wave) is Train #421, The Texas Eagle - Chicago to Dallas. The station stop feature on the #184 (Phase IV) is Train #370, Pere Marquette - Chicago to Grand Rapids.

The engines look nice and run nice. The only real "small" problem I ran into - when you try to install the snow plows, the screws that came with it are too big to fit in the mounting holes, so off to my "herd" of small screws and the plows were mounted.

Here is the picture of the new release #84 next to previous release #202. It looks like 202 may have just come out of the paint shop, where 84 has made many runs across Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas and has slightly faded and just got washed. 😁 It is much more noticeable that the camera is showing.

Big Amtrak fan and a big electric fan. Still, I always thought it looked cool but, when I re-entered the hobby, I knew my preference would be for the engines with pantographs. The said, on December 23rd at Nick Smith's the NJ Transit Genesis P42DC caught my eye and I am extremely happy I bought it.njt p42DC headerNJT P42DC

Unfortunately, the NJ Transit rolling stock I'm looking for is difficult to find, hencethe Amtrak or LIRR consists. That said, my TMCC Dash-9  and the NJT share duties hauling passenger cars in the tri-state area.

The NJT P42DC is an awesome engine, I have #4803 as well!!  You stated that you are looking for some NJ Transit rolling stock, there are a bunch of NJT comet cars made by atlas available on ebay at this very moment.  I hope that helps.

The horns and bells sound the same to me as the Amtrak wave versions 99 and 202 from a couple of years ago, however I also have the Amtrak Phase III Heritage unit 145 from about 4 years ago which had a somewhat sick horn, it seemed to have a delay and then slow rise in sound.

Also on the horn on the latest units, they start the sound immediately and it is a somewhat high tint horn with little or no base. In the old days, I might have been able to tell you whether it is a Nathan horn or a Leslie horn and whether it is a 3 chime or 5 chime horn, but this one doesn't sound like anything I remember, plus I have never actually heard a horn on an Amtrak Genesis unit.

Picked mine up from Legacy Station today! I really like it - the sound set sounds very similar to the P32-8BWH in my photos above, which makes sense since they're both GE 7FDL prime movers (although the P42 should be 16 cylinders, whereas the Dash-8 is 12)

@DG it looks like my pilot plow holes may have not been threaded - did you find screws that worked or is yours the same? Does anyone know the screw size? With some digital calipers, I'm measuring a diameter of 7/64" and it looks like it's fine threaded. Does anyone know the right tap drill for the plow screws? Some quick googling looks like 6-32 NC may be the correct one.

My engine also looked like they forgot to tap the hole, so I used some screws from my 40 years of collecting small screws from train projects. Here is the picture of the “replacement” screw versus the one that came with the engine. I think the replacement is from an MTH engine that I gutted and is a screw that holds small parts to the metal frame. As you can see, it is slightly smaller, slightly tapered and a more agressive thread. The replacement screw is the top one, the original the bottom one. The replacement screw basically did the “tapping” since the metal pilot is relatively soft metal.
