Hi folks, I was wondering if someone could help me out on the wiring of this crane. I have a couple of wires that are loose and would like to get up and running before I take it apart and repaint everything! Here are a couple of photos I have. I'm not sure you can rely upon the colors (your's appears to have been rewired at some point), but you can rely on the numbers/position.

Start by tracing from the bottom and comparing with the diagram previously provided:

Here is a new question, It looks like there is 22AWG in the crane now, my question is could I use 24AWG or even a pair of 24AWG for each connection? I am just trying to use what I have on hand. If not I will just have to buy new wire.

It's a short run, (probably not much more than a foot?) so I think #24 will be fine.

Mike, what you are looking for at the motor is #3 or#5 on the wiring diagram. Those are the two field coil wires and now of them is the culprit I'm pretty sure. I hope the wire isn't broken off where it comes out of the field coil too close to make a connection. I really want to see that old Crane working.

I just completed rewiring the Lionel 182 magnetic crane and it works fine. But I need information on what to lubricate the big plastic gear on top that rotates the crane left and right and the metal gears in the motor. The crane has been in storage for 40 yeas and no indication of any lubrication as far as I cane tell. Old Lionel tube grease from the 50's; Vaseline; maybe Kano Penephite - a combination of oils, solvents  and micro size graphite in suspension, or a Teflon type lubricant; or maybe a dry graphite lube? Thanks for any help, suggestions, or warnings.
