New York City In Snow 1920 - 1929

Niffty!!

My wife and I spent our honeymoon at the Plaza Hotel in NYC in Feb. 1967. We arrived on the 5th, and on the 7th, a blizzard dropped 12.5" of snow in a 12 hour period. Lucky that NYC is easy to walk around, because cabs were impossible to find.

You gotta love the dress codes of those days.

Wow, that was amazing to me. I guess you need it when things are tight and the snow gets deep!

Life was much simpler back in those days and rail transport was everywhere. Pennsylvania Station was a busy places as was Grand Central.   The thing most fascinating about this video was that you don't see a person not wearing a hat.  People seemed smarter about cold weather dress back then and the indoor activities still included model trains. I would have liked to experience those days but that was way before I was born.

And the trucks were headed to the river to dump the snow.  Try that today.

I thought so too, until I saw a guy without one......LOL   Check out the film at 1:07.  The guy is just to the left of the umbrella.

My hope would be that someday a time machine could be built.  But I doubt that will happen in my lifetime.  

Back then all they used was salt,ashes or nothing...the snow was dumped in the Hudson....today we use all sorts of chemicals,and we dump it in open areas where it seeps into the ground and eventually ends up in the water table or sewer....PROGRESS????
