Announcing our latest product:  FX Matt's Premium Utica Club Lager Reefer.  This O Scale model is inspired by the Beverage Ventilator Despatch wooden reefers built by Merchants Despatch Shops in East Rochester for the New York Central Railroad.  It is made exclusively for Jr Junction Train & Hobby by MTH Electric Trains in cooperation with FX Matt Brewery Company.  We couldn't be more pleased to offer this beautiful O gauge model railroad beer reefer car to model railroaders and beer collectors alike!

I am so excited to have helped on this car!

Let’s talk a little about this car; first up at the road name and markings.  We have taken an existing road name (Beverage Ventilator Despatch) which was owned by Merchants Despatch and manufactured here in NY state in Rochester, and closely affiliated with the New York Central.  Here’s an actual photo of a BVDX car in East Rochester, which I purchased from the digital archives of the NYCSHS. Copy of the receipt below.

We used colors that would be appropriate for FX Matt labels from that era and are intended to represent a light green label on a dark green glass bottle.

In matching with ICC guidelines for the era, the lettering, road numbers and car weight and capacity details are black representing a car manufactured in 1933; right before the end of the billboard reefer era.

Weight and capacity details are taken directly from BVDX #102, as does the reference to the journal pack lettering and location of East Rochester.

With that said, let’s continue on to the subtle nods to the FXM Brewery’s history.  Car numbers are 1878 and 1888; the years that represent the year that a 19-year old Francis X. Matt emigrated to America from Germany and settles in Utica, NY and the year that he reorganized the Bierbauer Brewery to form the West End Brewing Company, respectively.

The repack date represents December 1st, 1933; the date on the memo that allows FX Matt to ship at 12:01am the day of the repeal of Prohibition, December 5th, 1933.

There’s another subtle detail, and that is the return routing placard next to the door which reads “When empty, return to the West End Brewing Co., Utica, NY”

Lastly, let’s look at the Matt’s Premium Utica Club logo, lifted directly an actual logo from that era, and to this day is the only era to have both Matt’s Premium and Utica Club in the same logo, something that Mr. Matt was about to learn himself from this research.

We would like publicly thank Mr. Matt, and his marketing team, for allowing @JR Junction Train & Hobby to use, manufacture under license and sell these cars with their logo in hopes that this will be an ongoing cooperation for future projects.

Even though FXM and West End Brewing never shipped in private-labeled cars, there is an extensive railroad & brewery history that still exists to this day!  Here’s a video from a friend that shows their modern delivery practices… yes; the GP40 goes in the brewery.  

We would also like to thank the other customers, like myself, that continue to support brick and mortar hobby shops everywhere, and those here whom are preordering these beauties.

I just got on the list for both cars. These UC reefers may not be full of  beer, but they help me recall some great, UC related, memories.

Early in my career, the late (then 40 year old) Walter J. Matt, Jr. Esq. hired, trained and mentored me as a young attorney at Marine Midland Bank in Buffalo.  Wally had a Schultz and Dooley bumper sticker on his office door and appropriate UC Beer Mugs in his office. When (the late) "FX" called, nothing was more urgent to Wally than Wally's impending conversation with his brother, FX !  When Wally visited his  family and the UC brewery, he returned to Buffalo with "super fresh" suds.  It was "tough to argue over a Utica Club, 'cause they [really did] put too much love in to it" [borrowing a 1960's UC advertising jingle] !  Have a "heavenly" UC,  Wally.

UC for Me!

Speaking of FXM memories; I remember when I was younger, that FXM II would refuse to let anyone else cut his lawn, other than himself and I can still see him riding that red Snapper around.  I think of that when I think I should pay for someone to do something; I'd rather do it myself.

I don't think there's another community in central NY that has been built around or supports a common entity like West End Brewing; it has been the cornerstone of Utica for over 100 years!

every family event had a few; Papa and my uncles were BIG Matt's premium fans!  Papa mostly drank 6oz. splits; he called them hand grenades!

Hello everyone....

This AM radio jingle was nearly an Anthem for us 18 year old Syracusans  (and sometimes for those "not quite" 18 years old)  in the Mid to Late 60's.

Those were fun times.

This is an interesting thread with old memories.  I just ordered my car and found out that these folks are also producing an Allied Chemical tank car,Solvay Process,which I ordered!  This will be an Atlas car and is meaningful to me since I worked for Allied years ago.  Now if they would do a Church and Dwight hopper,in yellow of course........

I also remember that a six pack of UC was $0.89 at the TOPS Market in Mattydale in those years!  Hahaha.

Norm, we are very lucky to have Phil, who is not only the LHS owner, our NRHS Chapter  president, all around good guy and local railroad modeler, but also does some fantastic custom runs like the Solvay Process tank cars, the NYO&W milk cars and F3s, B&A and NYC cabooses, and the Syracuse Jubilee Hudson!

There are five of us that work together to gather details and ensure these can be as accurate as possible.

Question...

As 3040 headed down the street after its drop at the brewery, I see an elevated tower just beyond.  Really cool!!  Is it actively serving a purpose, or simply a relic from the past, now too much a part of the neighborhood to be removed??

I believe someone makes a kit of a very similar tower...in HO or O...or both?

Maybe an updated vid with more details on the tower someday?

That, KD, is an actual relic from the past! A surviving DL&W elevated switchman’s shanty that has always been right there in that location, where the street running begins. It’s been looked after by the Utica & Mohawk Valley Chapter of the NRHS, along with the NYC 0-6-0 at Utica Union Station.



BTW, MTH did a Susie-Q GP40 in two road numbers, and I think @JR Junction Train & Hobby may have one left. Here’s mine in 2-rail.

OMG YES!

I remember that track that ran along Erie St! The restaurant on the right is now the site of a Dunkin and the brewery is about behind the photographer in this picture.

The NYC Water Level main is at the end of Schuyler St. beyond the tree line.

Weaver Models made a beautiful model of this style tower in brass.  We sold a lot of them at the time.  According to my records the model numbers were G1954A and G1954B.  I have a gray one in my personal collection and I love it.  I don't know if they ever come up for sale on the secondary market?

The Delaware Lackawanna and Western had these.  Three survive today in Utica (above), Norwich and Cortland, NY.

Sorry, these are sold out and gone.  I wish I kept one myself!  We literally sold dozens of them in 2-Rail and 3-Rail!  Atlas "O" has the GP40 tooling now, so maybe they will do another run someday?

As for Utica Club, it was the 25 cent, 10 oz, tap beer of the Athens Hotel on the Hudson in Athens NY.  The first time Bill charged my Dad 30 cents for that same glass of beer was almost the end of stopping for a cold one, or three (had to leave a tip) on a Saturday afternoon.

When my grandfather was young, and first came over from Italy, the family lived in Hudson and he always talked about taking the boat across the Hudson to Athens for work!  Considering he was born in 1898, I'm assuming it was in the teens.  Good times!
