2015 Lionel MR 86' Hi-Cube Boxcar

Very, very nice cars!! Awesome in all regards!!! Love those Milwaukee Road cars, I remember seeing these on the tracks.  

Very neat. I have a couple on order, including one Milwaukee Road. Wondering if Lionel included instructions on installing the Kadees - specifically, about removing the stock coupler or the entire truck/coupler.

Hello David, I didn't spot any instructions on the Kadees but will try to look later. I believe the Kadees were included in separate bags, however. Love these cars though!

Very nice.  Did they have other road names available yet?  Will probably head out there this weekend to pick up a few. 

All the road names are available and in stock at least per Charles Ro's website...

These cars are massive. Standard soda can.

I got a bunch of them and have been running them since I got them. Just awesome. I already can't wait for the next catalog and hopefully they will have more road names so I can buy more................Paul

Package tracking says mine will arrive tomorrow. Not sure it was a good idea to pre-order it -  I'm rapidly losing interest in modern trains of any kind. It's too big to run at home; I can only run it at the museum/club where I am a member. On the up side, it will anchor a consist of 89' Atlas piggyback flat cars, 60' hi-cube auto parts cars, and other 60-foot-plus modern or semi-modern cars. It will make an impressive train at the museum. 

Yep, they're definitely layout shrinkers.

They are real impressive looking when you see them in action.  We have them running on our store layout.

I just want to add that I am glad Lionel decided to do these scale length cars.  It is almost like their BTO program, sort of. Because given the length of these cars I would have to say that the majority of layouts could not handle these cars................................Paul

Look it up in the catalog or website... O-54... But don't waste your time on anything less than at least double that for aesthetic reasons.

Good way to put it.  These cars have the exact opposite effect compared to all the little techniques we use (i.e., selective compression) to make layouts look bigger.  All it takes is one of these brutes on the layout, and all those techniques are for nought.

They sure are beautiful.  I wonder if any other mfg will do some?  I'd like to see B&O and CSX in 2 rail.  Otherwise I will have to get the Lionel and convert to 2 rail.  Which is not a big deal.

072 with Kadees and the Claw

A couple of things I'd advise:

1. Add some weight to the cars. They're a bit light. They'll track better.
2. Put them towards the rear of the train, even behind the Atlas 89-foot flats and articulated auto racks. As you drag a long train through model railroad sharp curves, you'll need the shorter (hopefully properly weighted) cars up front to put more "flanges per foot" in the curve to keep the train from string-lining. Long-wheelbase cars don't help unless they're REALLY heavy.

Those cars look closer with the kinematic lobster claws than with the kadees.  Is that correct or is just an illusion due to the camera angle?  Just curious....

Because of the nature of the cushion under fame and the difference in overhang, the high cube carbodies are further apart than on autoracks.

I noticed in the advertising for these that they say "Unique Road # for every car."  Is that actually true?  

I've got 4 autoracks, but they are only 2 road #s. They are nice, but I prefer the boxcars.  I only bought 2 Santa Fe High Cubes (and wish I'd just bought 6 of 'em). Picked up a Milwaukee cube today for a song.     

I believe it means only that the cars in the two-packs and the single cars for each road name don't duplicate numbers (and that probably holds true for the ones in the set with the CSX locomotive).

Lionel repeated that phrase in the catalog for the eight-door cars, but the dealer I ordered those from told me there is only one number for each road name for the 8-door model.

Thank you for the info. If that's the case, I'll have to find a single Santa fe - and maybe add one of the Rock Island 8 doors to my list - as a likely cross-road unit. I havent seen a real world example of a Santa fe 8 door - you'd think if Lionel had, it would have been a first run.
