Tank drive simply means that the drive shafts from motor to truck gearboxes occurs below the frame, out the ends of the fuel tank, to the trucks.  Many of Jay's repowers do this.  Lots of old brass does this.  It's only a problem if one is picky about appearances. On some locos, with little room between tank and trucks, or with skirting, the driveshaft isn't especially noticeable.  On something like a gp38-2 or say Milwaukee Road sd40-2 with the smaller fuel tanks (i.e. shorter), the driveshaft would be quite noticeable.

Now's the time, all right, for the most iconic passenger diesel of all, the Santa Fe E1 A/B, the engine the warbonnet color scheme originally was designed for. It's no bigger than other Es or the PAs being considered here and unlike those engines no 3 rail O gauge manufacturer has done them before.

A very similar B&O EA/B set could also be produced. The few visual differences there were between the engines of these two roads most likely could be ignored either way.

Everything mentioned here has been done in brass at one time or another. PA's have been over done. At least 3 technological generations of PA's have been done in 1/48 starting with Samhongsa's Key version in 1989 followed by Ajin in  2001 and Key Model in 2010. I am not referring to CLW.

Don't forget about Sunset's Samhongsa PA!

These GGD models are really brass models with plastic shells.

Oriental Limited did Torpedo boat GP7's, OMI did BL2's, GP9's and lest we not forget about the Red Caboose Geeps now produced by Atlas.

E1, E3, E5, E6 all have been now completed in the same dynamic. Firstly OMI back in the 80's then 2 runs by Key Model in 2012/13.

It would be nice to see an accurate early E unit in plastic. I would buy more. The key word here is done "right" or "correct".

Any of these is a possibility.  All it takes is reservations for 400 units.  The early Es were a contender instead of the later Es but the number of different plastic shells required vs the number of potential reservations kinda nixed them.  E.g., the B&O EAs require a different shell from the ATSF E1s which require a different shell from the CBQ E5s which require a different shell from the E6s. And doing E6s at all with the threat of Lionel (or MTH) doing another run of theirs?  Not gonna happen.  And then there are the UP E2s.

The 2-rail market is not enough to make anything happen alone (and neither is the 3-rail market).  While the 3-rail plastic diesels are a minority for 3rd Rail, and a shrinking one at that, they are still a make or break for a project.

Those first run Oriental Geeps are in my opinion pretty bad. The second batch was far better.

Rare is an understatement.

Does anyone have any word on when the next run of Sunset F7 road names will be announced?

There is no second run of F7s at this time.

Ah, that must because the CF7s are coming first!
