Must admit that, as much as I like the NYC Mohawk class, I'll have to pass. I already have a nice Lionel (rail sounds 5) L2, a Sunset/3rd Rail L3b, and an MTH L4b with the roller bearing rods. I would much rather have an H10b 2-8-2.

I'm in the same boat.  I have the 3rdrail L3 and the MTH L4.  While interested, do I really need a third Mohawk?  I hope they get the reservations and the project goes forward.  I'll have to think long and hard on this one.

I have one on reserve.  It's a model that has never been done before, so as a big NYC steam fan, it's a must have.

I believe Sunset, has in the past, announced a H10. But there was very little interest in that project.

Scott Mann of Sunset/3rd Rail is all ears when it comes to product interest.  We just have to be much more noticeable as to our desires and as a group let him know what models we want produced.

US Hobbies introduced a NYC H10 in two rail in the late 1960's or early 1970's. There are a LOT of these around....by some estimates more than 600 were made.

I was not surprised that Scott did not receive sufficient reservations to proceed with an H10.

The L-2C and L-2D are a different matter, never having been offered in O Scale or O Gauge. I think that either or both of these will interest a LOT of NYC fans. They are visually different than the Lionel L-2A and also different than the L-3 and L-4's produced by US Hobbies, 3rd Rail, and MTH.

He should try again. Some of us have come late to the party. When did he offer to make the H10s? I have only been concentrating on scale NYC steam for a few years. In that time I have acquired 7 Mohawks including two of his L3Bs plus all the NYC items he has offered since the late '90s. Sold one L2A. I have seen the US Hobbies H10s and will pick one up when the price is right and fit it to a 3 rail USRA Mikado with necessary mods.

There's lots of NYC steam left to go.  H10 yes, how about a pacific?  I would really love a correct B&A Berkshire with correct early/as delivered short tender.  Question is would they sell.  Now back to the Mikado, I wish Scott had left the reservation up a little longer.  I was not in the right point financially to order one at the time

now I would love Scott to answer this question.  Why not leave a project on hold indefinitely until the reservations are full, even if it takes a year or two?  I'd rather wait for a must have engine than not get it at all.

The reservation has not been taken down off the site.  It only got announced a week ago.  It would be safe to assume this will stay up for a while.  The ACE-3000 came down after several months and only 30 orders.

That's how the process works.  Float the trial balloons and see what sells.  Something like this locomotive though will eventually see the reservations to a point where it will go forward.  It may just take 6 months to a year.

Another way, used by us'n B&O fanatics, is to get together a cabal of petitioners and keep carrying on until enough folks have written, here and directly, to 3rd Rail. We (the aforementioned cabal) have a Q-4b, a  T-3, and a P-7d plus its Cincinnatian passenger train because of it.

I've seen 'em for less than a grand on eBay. You will have to--gasp, shudder-do some work.

Or, here's one, upgraded and painted, no electronic control, from Allegheny Scale Models:

New York Central Class H10a 2-8-2 Mikado

U.S. Hobbies

New - Late Run - KTM Japan
Custom Upgrade
Baker Valve Gear - Added Backhead Detail - Spoke Drivers - Elesco FWH
Crew
Rectangular Coal Tender w/6 Wheel Commonwealth Trucks - Straight Coal Boards
Professional Custom Paint - Semi-Gloss Black - Graphite Smokebox
Later NYC "San Serif" White Lettering - Road No. 2373
Headlight and Tender Backup Lights
Upgraded Drive - 9432 Pittman Can Motor - KTM Die Cast Ball Bearing Gearbox
Sprung Drivers - Kadee 745 Coupler on Tender - Test Run

Yo, Beano Cabal....   Any chance you could wrap some passion around an EMC EA...you know, that gorgeous hunk of Beanohood sitting in Baltimore?....and march up to Scott's door with pitchforks and torches?  Of course, groveling sometimes works, too.

Regardless, I'm in.

And, since it's the kindred soul of Santa Fe's E1 (The 2 Class), I'm in for that, too.

These are getting brown around the edges in my picture file, but I never tire of them....

I'm talking about the H10 mikados not the Mohawks

I am on the fence but have to say I probably can't do it budget wise. I just bought a E8 and that took up a lot of my hobby budget for this year. I previously purchased a new Sunset 2 rail Mohawk about 10 years ago (I think) and I already placed a order for a MTH -2 Mohawk. I have to look and see just how different these Mohawks are compared to the one I have and the one that is on order. I would rather order the H10 too. Just like Gary I was not in a financial position to buy one when Scott put out the feelers last time. This time I probably could order one.

Guys,

I was one of the unfortunate ones who was burned on Scott Mann's last NYC H10 offering.  I reserved one  ( -  3 rail version) and I received the confirmation paper work from Scott.  After a long wait I emailed him and learned that the H10 project had been canceled

Scott had my contact information, he should have let me know the project was canceled.

I hope Scott comes through for you with the Mohawk project.

I have the Lionel L3, two L2's, and the MTH L4 Mohawks. I won't be letting Scott burn me again.

Take care,

Richard

How were you burned by Scott Mann?????   Did you lose a deposit?   Not likely as 3rdrail doesn't require deposits.  Scott didn't get enough reservations to make the project profitable.  How was that his fault?

Yea I probably should have told those that reserved the H-10 that I was taking it off the list. But actually I don't cancel any projects, and I keep all reservations in file. Because sometimes in the future, the projects find some traction and we can again plan for it. Or the builder is desperate for even a small project to fill a gap, and if I tell customers that I am cancelling their order, you can't go back to them later.  So those that made reservations in the past are not forgotten.  Sorry to Mr. Gonzales for not making that clear.

Scott

Thanks Scott and Gary.

I appreciate the replies. Most of all I was just very disappointed that the H10 was canceled. Correct me if I am mistaken but I believe the H10 has been canceled twise. My H10 order was part of the "Short Line Series." I thought the 50 piece production numbers would ensure that the H10 would be produced. I think the note I received mentioned a problem with the vendor.

The NYC H10 Mikado and the K5 Pacific - with the feed water and "spaghetti plumbing " are the last two locomotives l need to complete my NYC rosters.

Maybe "burned" was a little strong, but very disappointed would be an appropriate description.

Best of luck to you for the successful completion of the Mohawk project.

Thanks,

Richard

I guess I don’t understand how you got “burned” when Scott had to shelve the project due to lack of interest. You could lobby other modelers to order the models to get the reservations up. If there aren’t enough orders to move a project forward the project doesn’t go, but you in no way got burned as you did not lose any money

Scott Mann/Sunset 3rd Rail is a pretty good example of supply and demand working very well.

They announce a project and project what the supply price will be and allow us as consumers to exercise our right to "demand" ie or it.    If the demand does no materialize, it is not their fault.    they put out the offer based on our input.    "we" as a group were apparently not nearly as interested as we thought we were.

More correctly,

"we" as a group were apparently not nearly as interested as Scott thought we were.

I don't recall interest being expressed in more Mohawks. On the other hand there were many requests for H10 Mikados and K5 Pacifics.

Personally, I would have liked the H10 and the L2D.... I'm disappointed that it didn't work... but I understand.. that's life. There just wasn't enough interests to justify it...

It's kind of sad, but not much steam coming from 3rd Rail anymore... Might never see an L2d in brass or even the H10....

Glad for the Diesel though, they look Amazing...

Well that's a bit of fresh air. At least I know Scott will contact me if the ACE 3000 demo would ever come to fruition!
