The DCS hand held remote has not been used for around two years. Tried to power up, pressing the on/off button, and nothing happened. Replaced the four batteries and tried again. Zip. Nothing shows on the screen. The MTH dealer near us is no longer from what I can tell so no help there.

Any ideas?

Not good...outside of checking the battery polarity and making sure the batteries are snug I'm not sure what else you can do.   If you're familiar with the dcs loader you could try loading the software again but that seems extreme and probably won't help. long shot.

If the remote won't turn on, DO NOT attempt to load any software. That will not fix anything and can make things worse.

That's just not true....I've done it a few times and it has worked .  I would certainly try every thing else first though.

Yep OK I get it... I'm not sure what else Tahodog can try?   I don't think the contrast feature is at work here. I believe it reverts back each time the remote is powered up.

Hang in there... Maybe more suggestions  and perhaps  one of the techs on here can help, It may take  a day or so for them to reply.

I know that this post is old but maybe some folks like me need this information. You can indeed unbrick the remote by reinstalling the firmware or software for it. My remote had the oldest version and i unbricked with the newest version. To clear things up a bit, follow the instructions but you will notice the screen on the remote will stay off for the whole install or update when unbricking. Let the firm/software run and finish. Follow the instructions on screen and then power the remote on and it should boot right up.

QUESTION: how is he supposed to 'unbrick' it (I personally have no clue what that means but it doesn't matter I don't think) if he can't turn it on?

thanks - walt

I think he may be saying that it is indeed turning on, but you can't see it on the screen. Once you install the latest software, it will turn the screen on again. I am guessing here, but it seems like it is worth a try. This makes sense to me based on other electronics.

Gregg,

It's obvious that you've never had a remote brick-up during an update. I have.

I hate to correct Barry when he is not around to defend himself, but if your remote is a brick, I don't see why trying to install new software would hurt anything. The remote would be useless otherwise. Unless he is saying to take it to a repair shop.

On my remote, one of the.. terminals? - (the ends the battery touches) is oddly recessed. I had to put a pad inside my back cover to push the battery in place. To check this, keep the back off, push all the batteries in place and try. You should also be able to spot 1 or more of the tabs as oddly out of line, if this is the case.

I was going by his first line: "Tried to power up, pressing the on/off button, and nothing happened. Replaced the four batteries and tried again. Zip. "

I'm about as far removed from being a DCS guru as possible, so it seems I did not interpret that correctly. sorry.

I had one here that was going somewhat wacky with odd characters appearing on the screen.  I was able to determine it wasn't the screen as other things displayed in the same position were fine.  We decided to upload the software again.  However, it continued to go through the press the button, release the button dance, and finally we couldn't power it up at all.  Obviously, I did check the batteries, I check on the contacts going to the electronics for full voltage from all the batteries.  I can only surmise that it was having some processor issue, and when we started the firmware load, we finished the job.

My batteries come loose in mine too. I cut a thick cardstock business card to fit between the cover and the batteries. I have used it that way for years since.

I picked up a few of these from Dave Hikel at York a couple years back before COVID.  They work great and don't put any strain on the battery cover latch that usually results in breaking it.
